...that sounds rather human. Natural human reactions....but it must be said that wasn't a continous thing for all to all times.
As the Cold War startet the western allies needed the western Germans and toned down all that.....the same happened in the East. The Nazi crimes and the punishment for that faded into the background of actual politics.
As was mentioned already....it had been the "roaring Sixties", the 68er youth rebellion (if you call it like that), the next generation, which had nothing to do with that, which started to bring it to the forefront again and pointing fingers at the many ex-Nazis in gov and society....also only in the West that ist...in the East it was not much of a topic for forty years at all (especially the Holocaust that is) besides the glorious victory of Communism over Capitalism.
As I remember it became a big topic again in the course of the re-unificaton of West and East.....mainly stemming from fear of a to-strong Germany again...and unresolved reparation questions and re-negotiated borders and such...and here we are!
This gradually grew into both a deep resentment of foreigners telling them what and how they as Germans should have acted. Later on, it developed into a sort of "empathy fatigue"

Yeah....there isn't an East German who does not remember that from school....and it had quite the impact on us. One of the main reasons ex-GDRler are often so much more Russia-friendly than their western compatriots.
Now I have to run....'night all! :)

I doubt that actual Germans can truly apologize, they have done nothing wrong. Everything we do and say has to be fake, its the nature of the things. I think there are a few true responsible people still alive....but most are no longer!
One actual example....recently Robert Habeck, the leader of the german Greens posted on X a video with him seen walking through Auschwitz....he took part in the memorial ceremony for the 80th anniversary of the Liberation. Of course he showed atonement, his great-grandfather was a convicted Obersturmführer in the SA.

.....that brings me back to my absolutely unnecessary lament earlier....the east german dictatorship from '49 to '89 was very nationalistic....we were big on flag-waving and glorifying hymn, adoring poetry and everything, after all there war nothing else to keep the people together, also something nobody seemingly took/takes offence with, surely didn't put it into one direct line with the Holocaust and the Death Camps, I guess.
But maybe one reason why the AfD finds it more easier in the eastern half of the country, today.

I always wondered about that.....it's nothing wrong with "never forgetting", but most people seem only be concerned with our history till '45....totally "forgetting" our history which ended '89.
All that "never again" still happened nearly as a true copy (without the death camps mind you) in one half of the country for decades afterwards, only then called "socialism". All that one-party-dictatorship with the military parades, the kids in uniform and streamlined one-opinion-media, with a populace 99% pro-gov (or else!)...quietly, disturbingly ignored!

Think back to '89.....the end of "history"! For decades highly guarded borders fell and people were able to move again....open borders were seen widely as a good thing, meaning freedom!
The other big part was that the economies internationalized....wandering worker masses meant less production costs because of lower salaries....for a few decades lotsa people profited from open borders and open economies, from unified countries....nobody thought that would ever change, but change it did!
The age of globalization is now ending, the economies are about to be re-nationalized....hence the anti-immigration movements are winning....at the end will be re-build borders.
But you can't say that only leftist morons were for open borders....quite the contrary....they did build an unholy alliance with the great capital, the big firms, their sworn enemy, to keep the borders open and the cheapest workforce coming. I doubt they have accepted and acknowledged that fact till now actually....

....frankly IMHO the AfD is incredible successful from the opposition bank right now! There is no need to become part of the gov.
The "old" parties can't do to much differently than the AfD demands, knowing the majority of the people is behind her (in the migration question).....tricky situation for her enemies and a truly sweet spot for Weidel, Höcke and Co!
