Yes, Polish soldiers fought for POLISH Szczecin. While Soviet soldiers fought for Szczecin which could remain German because such were the plans. Even when finally Poland was allowed to take it, it was Poland under Soviet control, which was another occupation. Not so brutal as German before but still occupation. Symbols of Soviet occupation should vanish from the Polish public landscape. Fallen soldiers are honoured in cemeteries.

Interesting fact is that for a few years right after the WW2, the communist Polish army had its day on 9th May, to celebrate the end of the war.
