Turned into normal, non-thieving, non-scamming individuals.

Ours aren't.

You're obviously doing something wrong.

parasitizing

They don't.

Do their own kids not feel self conscious

A good friend is a full blooded Romany and he's a credit to his family.

how their mother has no rights and is treated as less than human?

Like the women and little girls raped in Bucha?

Policy is determined locally, by municipal leaders and governors.

As far as I know, that's the same for us.

reform

Reform?

Here it is.

About the question in the post before, what is the situation in your country about peripatetic Teachers for Romany and Traveller kids?

A rich tradition. One worth preserving.

Do you know the famous Polish song based on the Agnieszka Osiecka poem?

Sitting on their ass all day, smoking cigarettes and sipping on tea - while their wives and children beg on street corners.

That's r*SSians for you, and says a lot about that society.

Ours don't do that. A lot of Romany and Irish Travellers are in the scrap metal business or in construction.

What special provision is made for educating the kids there? A family friend used to work as a peripatetic Teacher, employed by the county to follow the families around as they move.

always say they're from the States.

You used to hear 'stateside'. Popular among a certain type of early/mid-1980s business executive/office monkey who'd been there once on holiday to Florida and once on a business trip to New Jersey until people started laughing at them for saying it.

Life / Will Poland ever be multicultural like Sweden, Germany or France? [283]

along with 1984 and Fahrenheit 431 and Arthur C Clarke and Frank Herbert Dune

Quite.

Crome Yellow is almost fun, however his contemporaries like Waugh and Woolf are a mile ahead.

I've always liked the way DH Lawrence (more or less local to me so they really pushed it at school and an elderly neighbour when I was a kid knew him when he was young and thought he was seedy) took the pĩss out of him in The Man Who Loved Islands.

an Aldous Huxley dose

A dreary writer, though his famous last words will go down in history: " LSD, 100 micrograms, intramuscular".

I wonder what Pan Ryszard's fast-approaching last words will be. Maybe "all women are b1tches and morons'.

due to the smallness of the community.

Only a few surnames, as I recall.

Generally very nice people in my experience.

A very rough lot and

We were in a hotel over Christmas with some Travellers (visiting family at a local camp who didn't have room for them in the vans, sort of the same as us).

Great people, very friendly to us, a little on the boisterous side. The women (all very young) were dressed like pop singers on stage. Those people know how to have fun.

The person I was with didn't pick up that they were Travellers and just thought they were party people. I found them to be fine.

One of them (as camp as a row of tents, btw) was telling us about how many times he'd been arrested in Hudddersfield!

In the city where we were, there have been Romany gypsies for 500 years and many have houses that they use as winter quarters. It's partly due to there being a lot of common land where they can graze horses. Plenty of Irish Travellers too; there are two council sites next to each other, one for each group, and there's never any trouble. They're part of the community, albeit a separate part.

If you want to go down a fun internet rabbit hole, have a look on YouTube for "traveler rants". Some are great fun. My favourite is Martin 'puff daddy' Ward. Camp, very openly gay and seems to love fighting.

comparing sledzie and black pudding.

They're much closer than you think albeit very different in some noticeable ways, however (in common with most island countries) England has a more complex and robust culture, one which outsiders think they understand but never ever do.

islamic empire that invaded india

The Moghul Empire and its dramatically sudden fall should be compulsory learning in American schools.

You can have 1000 aircraft carriers but that's not how to win wars in the 21st century. It didn't help in Iraq of Afghanistan

And the future is AI.

I've a feeling that in the next war we'll see more than just the drones and robotic dogs that have been shown to the public. <ilitary tech is always a bit further ahead than what is put in the public domain.

On my island, anybody who would vote for a deficit would be executed after a brief trial

On his island, nobody would be left alive due to all the executions and genocide. Who would want to go there?

Better to have an LGBTQI+ island; at least we've a never-ending supply of people willing to settle there and be fabulous.

the days of polish children being caned in australian schools in the 50s is over

Or any children.

You do hear sad stories in Poland though about the way school staff, especially so-called catechicists (too early to care about spelling) treat children with one or both parents from overseas.

how do you introduce western values to new migrants

I've a feeling that that boat has now sailed; the numbers are too large.

assimilation

Those days are gone.

Once, someone who emigrated from, say, Poland, needed a short wave radio to hear their own language, couldn't get kielbasa for love nor money and needed to save half a year's wages to visit home.

Now, people have all the TV channels they had at home, the entire internet at their fingertips and of course Ryanair Stansted-Modlin is often cheaper and always quicker than PKP Warsaw-Szczecin (and that includes airport travel/waiting).

And if ever the concept of Australia is introduced to the new arrivals, it's in the sociological concept of Australia being a colonial, genocidal, racist entity. Rather than a multicultural country we should all be proud of.

Something to blame Yank academics seeking to impose their views on others and r*SSian and Chinese propagandists seeking to undermine the free world are very much to blame for.

News / Why should Poland consider pursuing a strategic alliance with Russia? [392]

What about your ol mate who was in Urząd Bezpieczeństwa

Military intelligence. A Colonel and a fairly well known one.

Like many of the military he had to bite his tongue.

was he just doing his job

Of course. Like the rest of the army, his loyalty was to Poland.

they do. there's a 3-5 year waiting period due to the demand

You're probably thinking of people in the former Soviet Union. I don't see South Americans with a Polish granny rushing to go (it cannot in any sense be called a return) to PL.

A lot more than

The same as. They don't speak the language and aren't even European.

Then again, there are a lot of Haitians who have a little Polish blood. A chance to settle in PL might be interesting for them.

The Poles I know have expressed complete lack of trust of Russia and Russians from conversations I've had with them

In decades there, I've only heard two Poles be even slightly positive about r*SSia.

One was half r*SSian and the other had mental health problemss.

the formation of any kind of a Polish-Russian alliance.

This will not happen in the lifetime of anyone reading this.

Even the Warsaw Pact was forced on them under threat of violence.

Well, it was French business and German officials that were most critical of the Commission's clumsy negotiations

Because it hasn't served their interests.

Starmer fed Trump a load of sh*t. 13,000 tonnes of beef? Haha

He was one of Europe's top human rights lawyers before he was a politician and has an IQ double that of Trup's. The negotiating t3m had a certain strength too; in the US, the most talented people often go into corporate work whereas in the U.K. they are more likely to go into the Civil Service.

LITERS

Litres.

Apparently Merz and Macron are super frustrated with the Commission for negotiating like idiots

Robotic imagination-free Germans and venal and scheming Frenchmen, all of them trying for a deal which helps their own countries at the expense of other EU member states,

We approached it like a business deal

Which is what it is.

Expanded karta polska. Kazakhstan and South America

One issue is that most of those people don't particularly want to move tp PL.

all those people who can prove Polish ancestry

Someone who's got one great granny born on what is now or has been Polish territory has nothing to do with Poland.
