News / Achievements of the Tusk's Polish government [538]

I didn't mean that he had to take a political decision such as that. A simple phone call by Sikorski to Obama asking about the status of it would suffice.

Yes, that's true. However, where have the efforts been to press them on it? When one side doesn't fulfil their part of the contractual bargain, it is standard practice to question them on it. You can be sure that if Poland turned a blind eye to their obligations then America would have sth to say about it.

This is the ultimate measure. Policies should be well-thought out/through so doing a U-turn should require more accountability or a damn good explanation. For example, I don't think that Tusk has explained putting the missile shield on the back burner well enough at all. It was a done deal but somehow it is insignificant now.

Aha, now I follow, frd :) Thanks for the clarification :)

This is about the achievements of Tusk's government. Can anyone actually show some of his manifesto pledges? The SNP did this in Scotland. They announced pledges and then showed how many they kept to. Can any Polish person here point me to his manifesto Vs reality?

But wouldn't most Poles expect no less of him than to reform the country? I can honestly say that the majority of Poles I have come into contact with have told me that the status quo has to be changed. Do you feel that Tusk and PO have been too interventionist? I think laissez-faire only works to a limited extent in the Polish governmental model.

I'm the same, frd. I think Tusk has been the quiet politician all along. Political commentators often made the point that his strategy was not to be spectacular but more to consolidate, make incremental changes in certain sectors and, above all, avoid costly blunders. Certain leaders get off with them, e.g Thatcher with her poll tax, but Tusk wouldn't.

Perhaps, frd. I've heard her name but am not really familiar with her. I'm no fan of Tusk but credit where credit is due. Malopolanin, I also have some socialist leanings but poverty requires separate treatment. Sport is to be encouraged, regardless of the state of poverty.

You shouldn't have children if you can't provide for them so let's stay on topic with Tusk's football priority, shall we? He did very well to encourage people to take up football if they hadn't already been players. When you make it too expensive, you create lethargic people and miss the chance to foster new talent.

On a personal note, Tusk did well with the Orlik astroturf stadiums for free. I read a FB comment today that David Cameron is going to ask parents to pay for play areas (2.50). What a farce! It costs an arm and a leg to play on astroturf stadiums back home yet Tusk realised that it can be funded through taxpayers money. Poles need to stay fit and active as it has been scientifically proven that you are more alive and inclined to be productive if you play/do sport. I feel this to be the case if I don't overdo it.

So, well done to PO on that one!

Genealogy / THE MEANING AND RESEARCH OF MY POLISH LAST NAME, SURNAME? [4500]

Sound advice for the OP! My wife told me that people with the ending 'ski' often fared better in the job market. I don't know if that's true.

It is likely from a remote village somewhere.

Life / Why Poles have so pro-emigration attitude? [93]

They tend to be more dependent, yes. Many fell prey to the dictates of the boomerang generation where they return to their families after having left the nest to no effect. Why live in a society that is like a pressure chamber?

Havok, there is an element of truth in what she is saying, trust me. Then again, I'm not a believer in typecasting a whole nation. Hence the discussion of experience, forum style ;)

That's a fair point, PMoc. They wanted to haul a*s out of Poland and try sth new. However, I think most underestimated how lonely they would feel away from their families. Poland is a tight-knit society in terms of family values and time abroad means 'absence makes the heart grow fonder' and, perhaps, 'absinthe makes the head forget' ;)

Life / Poles and their listening skills [22]

I think some would benefit from relaxation therapy. When you are constantly thinking of the next thing to do or place to be then you are never fully in the moment and open to discussion. Many love the safety of their homes. I've noticed that Poles will often lighten up when they are going home. They might listen to you more then when their minds are unburdened.

I think there is some truth in this, aphro. Many are plainly not interested in what you have to say. I acutely feel this as a foreigner. Like yourself, my Polish is easily at that level where they understand me completely (geez, I translate) but it doesn't change the fact that they jibber jabber in amongst themselves.

The worst, of course, is amongst old people. There can be 3 simultaneous conversations going on with no-one listening to one another. Quite astounding!

Yeah, my conclusion is that many are poor listeners.

Love / Polish women are the most beautiful in the world! [1718]

LOL, superb retort! That should put an end to his false propaganda!! Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I see plenty women here that would make pigs and cows look good.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Russians tend to be very pretty. The white Slavic ones more than the mixed breeds. Polish too, of course. The women of Latvia were nice :)

News / John Paul II's Beatification [134]

Rape must be through penile penetration btw.

Anyway, back to the topic. What Catholic virtues were espoused by JPII? What was his most endearing Catholic feature?

Sok, stop the nonsense! Children cannot do that and you know it. Priests have been caught out before and their name is often synonymous in parts of Scotland with such heinous deeds. JPII was more concerned with his international duties and didn't concern himself with such matters.

History / Whom do the people in Poland hate more: Germans or Russians? [871]

Look at a map. Is it now Breslau or Wrocław? Gleiwitz or Gliwice? Hinderburg or Zabrze? Konigshutte or Chorzow? You are referring to the decisions of leaders, not the whole population. Besides, many had been indoctrinated/brainwashed that they were to dominate and own things like the Silesian coalfields.

Many were denied free movement opportunities for so long and now it has changed. It makes sense to see the world and test yourself in different ways.

To Polish folk here, what distinctly Catholic feature did JPII have? What Catholic beliefs did he espouse that warmed people to him?
