Real Estate / Apartments too expensive for Poles living in Poland [54]

The government doesn't have any form of handouts that you could live on well if you could get a job and family's are usually on a tight enough budget.

The biggest handout of all are government owned apartments.

I would change it to New apartments in the centre of cities too expensive for most Poles yet there are alternatives in the suburbs where housing is the same price as a small flat in the centre and with all the new roads it is easier than ever to get into town.

They're still pretty pricey. I mean, using any of the commonly accepted criteria for budgeting, even an apartment in a panalak outside of the center would still break the family budget.

UK, Ireland / Warning to British people visiting Poland!! Don't get drunk and smash the place up! [447]

This was a very frightening experience for him and if it hadn't been for his work colleague phoning hospitals etc i dread to think what would happen

I'm guessing organs would have been harvested. Good thing they found him.

I have heard these stories and it always seems to be Krakow. Krakow is seen as a stag party city thats cheaper than Prague. I am glad that these English people are not wanted and are banned.

Prague got too expensive for them, and the city just ended up getting fed up. The majority of the clubs and bars in the old town stopped allowing stag groups to even enter. Big signs on the doors, and big coal miner type guys to make sure they were followed.

I agree, and, if you don't meet this criteria, you sleep on the street or rent. There must be millions of Poles sleeping rough then?. There arn't?, why?

Rent, city owned apartments, inherited property, living with mom and dad....

You think it's a good idea to spend over 50% of your household income on a mortgage? Do you think that's sustainable?

Edit:

Maybe this should be changed to New apartments too expensive for poles

23% plus 19% plus 14% is 56%

Add them all together and you get 116%

look Sean, 116% of people can't be wrong :)

Anyway, it's simple. Take median household income after taxes for a city, subtract the monthly mortgage and insurance payment for a median 60m2 flat from income, if you end up with more than half of your income left over, the property is affordable (barely), if there is less than that, it's not affordable.

The usual shtick is that you can afford 2-3x your yearly income on property.

Life / Warsaw - what's there to love? Semi-livable city? [42]

I bought a laptop and found it was defective when I got it home. The next day I took it back and the shop said "send it to service...we just sell them it's not our problem".

Buy something at a reputable store. Saturn even takes back stuff because of customer error (failed to read the package correctly)...

Life / Warsaw - what's there to love? Semi-livable city? [42]

.....It is interesting to note that Warsaw is so low on the list, I'm sure some forum members would disagree?

I don't know, I've never heard anyone excited about moving to Warsaw... Krakow, Gdansk, Wroclaw maybe... there's usually a sigh involved, some comments about a salary, and an overwhelming cloud of sadness.

link?

the economist charges stupid amounts of money and have Vancouver on the top of the list. You probably don't want to see the list :)

Let's stop for a minute and think. The origin of the thread was Polish-German alliance.
Let's try to find some examples of it in history. It could be funny.

The Poles as a people, or as a nation?

As a nation...

When Poles and Germans invaded the Czech Republic in '68? :)

ISAF is a bit more recent. Even though Germany and Poland are parts of different commands.

Clap trap, try telling the Italians that. It is not German period. "in the 19th century, a committee of historians led by Giosuè Carducci traced the founding of the University back to 1088"

The Italians seem to think it themselves.
eng.unibo.it/PortaleEn/University/Our+History/default.htm

The first recorded scholars were Pepone and Irnerio, the latter of whom was defined by the former as "lucerna iuris". With the advice of four doctores thought to be their pupils, in 1158 Federico I promulgated the Constitutio Habita, in which the University was legally declared a place where research could develop independently from any other power.

Right, but what's your point? The HRE still existed while the slavic tribes in Poland were Pagan.

Germany was officially formed and unified in the 19th century.

And Poland was officially formed and unified in 1990. Or do you want to go back to the commonwealth and call that Poland even though 80% of the territory doesn't match up with where Poland is on the map today...

Simple as that the university in Prague is and was Czech...

Sure, regardless of the fact that the makeup of Prague at the time was mainly Germanic and it was ruled by a Germanic King...yes, I suppose you have a point.

Charles University is Czech, founded by a German King with overwhelmingly German speaking students and faculties. That does indeed sound like a text book example of a Czech university.

Charles was a King of Czech Kingdom. Ofcuz He was German.

He was also king of Luxembourg, and Burgandy.

Anybod caould be King of HRE becouse HRE hadn`t the King. Only Emperor.

King of the Romans (German king), The emperor title was a gift from the pope.

yeah but university was founded earlier "The true date of its founding is uncertain, but believed by most accounts to have been 1088"

It was a place of learning in 1088, but not a university.

Yeah the university in Prague was founded by Charle but Charle was The Czech King... Am I right?:)

If you consider the house of luxembourg czech, then yes.

Teahh Bologna is German Univeristy ...;)

Of course. Received its charter from Barbarossa. And you've got Charles University in Prague as well.

Older united State I think would be better words

Holy Roman Empire? HRE existed while the slavic tribes in Poland were still Pagan.

Nationalist Germany puts them on the national football team.

Anyway, if you look at all the Poles that migrated in the late 1800s, early 1900s....they're treated as...get this, Germans.

History / Whom do the people in Poland hate more: Germans or Russians? [869]

However I still think that the UK is Poland’s no. 1 partner in Europe

If it wasn't for the fact that Germany makes up almost a quarter of trade with Poland, nearly 40% of FDI, and hosts the largest number of Polish citizens, I would agree with you.

Work / An Australian girl living in Poland: Residence permit, please help! [44]

I can't give you any advice, but I can understand people who break rules when Polish red tape is involved.

It's not Polish redtape, it's just straight forward schengen rules.

So based on that I may as well stay here, same result if I stay or go.

the only difference is that once in violation, you will be deported. if you have no belongings, and no rental contract, nobody that you wouldn't mind seeing for a long time, then you have no problem and can stay here and hope not to get popped.

Life / Why so many Poles use a second hands clothes? [110]

Many people here do not have much money and buy from farmer's markets and second hand clothes shops.

interestingly enough, in wealthy countries, the rich buy from farmers markets and second hand clothes stores...and the poor buy from supermarkets and shopping malls.

As long as money exists we will never be free, its an ingenious system to enslave the human race.

money backed by something is great, fiat money is crap.

no, it's a straight forward question. do you just like new things? being the first to use a product.

the second question kind of tied into the first, do you have an issue with buying a new product at deep discount outlet prices.

Are you ashamed to use the water from your tap? Do you realize that it has been recycled many times, and from what?

Probably uses bottled water. For instance, I bathe in Evian. Aquafina is for the peasants.
