Not really: I have always said that; you, on the other hand, recommend texts which contain utter bollocks such as "the Jews were like hungry dogs in front of a butcher shop" and "The Jews then played the role of a "fifth column." "

To be honest harry, you haven't always said that or we wouldn't be where we are now. I also recommend this article in Wikipedia:

As I have said repeated, some gentile Poles were good, some were evil, some Jews were good and some were evil. What Poles owe Jews (and what Jews owe Poles) is to tell the truth about that simple fact and to neither try to white-wash the parts of history which are inconvenient for them or to overstate the negative acts by what they see as the 'other side'.

At last we're beginning to agree on something.

I totally agree, the same in all societies, except whilst some of us can acknowledge this, there are some who refuse too see it because that goes against their blinkered agenda.

He doesn't claim anything. He has compiled, from various sources, witness statements from people who witnessed Jewish people acting "rather badly" towards their Polish neighbours. I posted that in the interests of balance as Harry accused me of anti Semitism and he's always making statements about how badly Poles behaved towards Jews during WW2. Well, it takes two totango guys and there plenty more where that came from.

Harry, as you are totally incapable of reading and when you do you tend to read just what suits your own point of view I quote myself just for your benefit.

Forgive me Pawian for your thread going slightly awry. I was thinking maybe a better thread title might have been What does Poland owe to Jews. You give some fine examples of notable Polish Jews who have contributed much in enhancing the reputation of our country, I am sure there are many more, and they should be honoured every bit as much as we honour the likes of Chopin, Sienkiewicz, Mickiewicz et al

Ah, now we get on to the semantics of numbers. I disagree, it was quite a significant number. Personally I think it was Polish citizens who were the main victims, I don't recognise religion so we'll have to dicuss numbers according to nationality.

What some people can't seem to get their heads round that war brings out the good and bad in people - on all sides. Never have I claimed that Poles were perfect or total angels during WW2 but whenever I have defended my people against slurs and downright lies I get called an anti Semite and a liar. Well there was plenty of bad sh!t going on amongst the Jews during WW2 as well, you weren't the angels so many of you would have the world believe. You want to sling mud, fine, we can sling it every bit as much as you guys can. Personally I'd rather focus on the positives that pawian was trying to illustrate but there's always those who want to start finger pointing and playing the blame game. Well, if that's the way things are going to be I have a whole heap of ammo to play with so bring it on.

I was there 6 days ago. The town centre is small but very tidy however outside of that it's just a typical small, communist style reconstructed town.

It pains me to say it but I have to agree with gdyniaguy here. The advertising hoardings, the (lack of) planning, some of the paint jobs on the renovated blocks (yeeurggh). No lessons have been learnt from the Communist driven post war concrete block building spree. The headlong rush into capitalist post Communist era hasn't done anything to refresh the thinking of the town planners when it comes to development. The war and Communist architecture blighted many Polish towns and cities and it's going to take time and billions of Złoty to change things.

Back to the topic though. Chorzów is very grim; Płock outside the Stare Miasto is horrendous; Gdynia's only saving grace is the harbour area and Kamienna Góra; agree about Malbork, the town is a hell hole. I'm not going to nominate a town for most ugliest bit I'd like to nominate Poznań as the most disappointing place I've visited in Poland. Outside the Stary Rynek it's just a mad, traffic congested, big city. I was expecting something like Wrocław or Kraków but the Stare Miasto is small considering how big a city it is and I didn't find it as interesting or as nice as I do Wrocław or Gdansk.

Communism is incompatible with any religion. How do you define Jewishness? Who knows? Is it a religion, an ethnicity or a nationality? I'm not a sociologist or a geneticist so anything I put forward as an opinion would no doubt be shot down by the amateur experts on PF. ;)

With the notable exception of Lenin (Vladimir Ulyanov) although his maternal grandfather was Jewish, most of the leading Communists who took control of Russia in 1917-20 were Jews. Leon Trotsky (Lev Bronstein) headed the Red Army and, for a time, was chief of Soviet foreign affairs. Yakov Sverdlov (Solomon) was both the Bolshevik party's executive secretary and -- as chairman of the Central Executive Committee -- head of the Soviet government. Grigori Zinoviev (Radomyslsky) headed the Communist International (Comintern), the central agency for spreading revolution in foreign countries. Other prominent Jews included press commissar Karl Radek (Sobelsohn), foreign affairs commissar Maxim Litvinov (Wallach), Lev Kamenev (Rosenfeld) and Moisei Uritsky. Lazar Kaganovich and Pavel Postyshev, who oversaw the disastrous collectivization of farms in the Ukraine whick led to the Holodomor, were also Jewish.
