News / Poland in the European Union. Polexit? [559]

Merkel and Macron will no doubt instigate great changes this year.

Is that a joke? They certainly have no mandate for any such thing since they hold no formal positions in Brussels.
Also, Macron's ratings have not been impressive lately and it took Merkel six months to form a government and she's maneuvered herself into the unenviable position of being unable to address the problems that weakened her because to do so would be seen as strengthening the dreaded AfD...

The message from voters in lots of countries has been to slow down on the pan EU integration already, it's not wanted.

News / Poland in the European Union. Polexit? [559]

the town voted by 93% majority to refuse the 115. We'll wait and see but the people will be heard, that's for sure.

Yeah, it'll be "We hear you! And there's nothing you can do to stop us from sending the 115 here!"

Life / How do Polish people treat their animals? [33]

Kittens as the bait???

sounds like an urban legend.... and what can be fished in Poland that's big enough to take a kitten as bait? They used to have giant catfish in the danube but that's not Poland... would a sturgeon be big enough to take a kitten? would it want to?

We have a well integrated Muslim population already

The tendency in western countries is that the larger the muslim population the less well integrated they become. Muslim cultures are largely conformist and when they don't have other muslims around to monitor them they integrate more, when the number of muslims is large enough they tend to become conformist and regressive as they value the opinions of their co-religionists more than any non-muslim majority....

A better source for immigration might be Latin America where they _really_ like western europe and are likely to disappear into the larger population pretty quickly.

News / Israel opposing potential new Polish law to criminalise term 'Polish death camps' [1539]

In other news, some sick people think that sending teens to Europe for 'holocaust trips' is a good idea. Teenagers do not have the level of maturity needed to deal with that type of historical trauma.... It does fit in with traditional Israeli attempts to create a fortress mentality in the population, I guess.

Genealogy / The typical Polish look, or all Eastern Europeans [676]

A lot of Polish women are _very_ much into the southern european look (more into Spanish than Greek but anywhere swarthy). He won't lack for female comapny in Poland.

I was once talking to a Polish teacher of Greek who said such marriages (Polish woman Greek man) rarely work out because things that are tolerable in a boyfriend/crush quickly become intolerable in husbands... Polish men tend to become uxorious after marriage and southern europeans.... don't.

describing people with mental health problems as 'crazy' just 'others' them

that's the point! more seriously there are boatloads of crazy everywhere in the US among people who would not be diagnosed as having 'mental health problems' when I say crazy I mean 'irrational'

75% of Poles do not want migration from me

Don't be so hard on yourself, if they only got to know you a little they might not be so opposed to migration from you.... or.... maybe not? I dunno...

Law / Weapons laws in Poland. Carrying a concealed handgun? [918]

Is any government figure (responsible for allowing so many South Asians into the UK) in any danger of having acid thrown in their face?

No? If not, that's why they don't think it's a problem.

Similarly, they watch over their teen daughters and so they don't care about mostly white mostly non-muslim teenage girls being exploited by mostly pakistani gangs...

The overall pattern in Europe is that those making policy don't suffer bad effects when they make bad decisions...

Now Britain is truly an uncivilised ..

But you don't understand, acid attacks don't actually have any effect on the people responsible for importing it to the UK so there might be a little lip service, but you know.... eggs, omelets and all those higher ideals and improved fast food options. Which is more important anyway, rule of law and a law abiding population or more interesting ethnic restaurants?

Either you think the law in Poland should remain as it as or you don't.

Yeah. For the record (AFAICR) I've never suggested Poland follow US style gun laws. I have said that Polish people, being that way they are, are very liable to not follow gun laws and those who want them will find and acquire them. "Rules are for other people, my case is special" might as well be the national motto....

He shouldn't have any say in what rules and laws made in Poland. He doesn't even speak any Polish.

Maybe none of the Jews who can speak Polish know (or are willing to follow) the correct party line

I just don't understand why.

My guess is that he's supposed to be sowing dissent and dischord (while appearing to not be doing that).

The question is why is the government falling for it?

there isn't the same level of deaths from guns that you see in the USA

Actually homicide rates per 100,000 people aren't that high in the US... usually around 4 per 100,000 which is lower than Estonia or Turkey... when you factor in that most of the homicides are actually drug gang violence it's even lower.

And there's the ethno-racial component blacks and latinos are both wildly over-represented in gun violence. the US quadrupled its latino population in something like 40 years and increased gun violence is at least partly a side effect of that. (Black violent crime and gun crime rates tend to be high everywhere unless suppressed by draconian measures).

Everyone would like to disarm and disband violent drug gangs but other policies of the US encourage high drug consumption which means the gangs thrive.

If not, I am for California and Texas to become independent and Alaska to be adjoined to Canada.

I'm okay with giving up Alaska (useless place that messes up maps) and Hawaii (and Puerto Rico).

Then we'll see about California and Texas. The former is probably too unweildy to be governed as a single country and would split into norhtern and southern factions pretty quickly though the north could merge with Washington and Oregon (see the book Ecotopia)

My suggestion

Is a high trust monocultural European solution to a low trust diverse American problem, which a large minority or maybe a majority of people don't think is a problem.

I repeat. Most Americans do not feel that law abiding private citizens having (and often carrying) firearms is a problem and will resist any program to significantly disarm the public.

Start with the state that has the least amount of gun crime, whichever that is and introduce a pilot scheme there.

And don't call it a scheme in the US (very negative connotations overall it needs to be called a program or project or something like that)

Actually hard to do since it's hard to find statistics that separate suicide from homicide. And there are regional cultural and demographic issues that need to be addressed (and which nobody wants to address) and a program that might work in one area won't work in others, there's more regional differences in terms of history and culture in the US than most Europeans realize.

Jews share this trading facility they acquired with that of the Chinese

The term 'market dominant minority' is used for both (diaspora Chinese in SEAsia are widely despised for their monetary and other shenanigans).

Compare the Parsi minority in India widely admired for their philanthropy

I'm all in favor of mass shootings, but the problem there is mental illness and alienation (there's a high correlation between rootlessness and shootings) - not easily solved by taking away guns from normal law-abiding people.

And I'm not talking about migrants I'm talking about US citizens - but no one is supposed to mention differing crime rates by race/ethnic group in the US.

we've probably discussed America's violent crime and gun problems sufficiently....

yeah... vast cultural rifts aren't going to be solved on an internet forum (who'd a thunk it?)

I have actually seen a couple of guns in Poland on the street (and once in the middle of an osiedle where a bunch of teenagers were admiring it).

This was back in the 90s though (maybe early naughts for the osiedle gun) and I don't go out at night much anymore...

What would you, as an American citizen suggest as a starting point?

This is the problem.... the Americans who are most in favor of gun control tend to live in urban areas and they want guns out of the hands of minority criminals but they can't say that out loud and so instead they talk a lot of smack about the NRA or responsible gun owners... good policy never comes from lies so until they can openly say that urban black and latino crime is a serious problem they can't actually address the issue.

Unarmed police + unarmed public = a peaceful country

Only as long as armed criminals are few and far between...

But it's not just gun crime, burglaries are probably a lot more common in places where thieves are pretty sure the homeowners won't be armed...

What the hell is happening in the UK?

They were involved in slave trade of Europeans.

And many Jewish families in the US South were slave holders, 75% of families in some places, though admittedly numbers of families were small and mostly urban so this didn't represent as many slaves but they owned slaves at a higher per capita rate than southern non-jewish whites.

but I don't mind admitting that I think the US should scrap the second amendment

The only legal way to do that is through a constitutional amendment (the US consittution is such that nothing can be taken out, only added so that (for example) the 21st amendment repeals the 18 (which is still part of the constitution)

Messing with the Bill of rights will be a gargantuan task and all but doomed to failure. It really would be easier to deal with the underlying social problems instead.

Hint: school shootings happen in transient areas where there is a lot of immigration (internal or external). People who aren't tied to communities are more likely to break ultimate taboos...
