Life / In Poland on holiday - need help with bad case of homesickness [108]

Everything seems better. It's cleaner, pavementa are wider, I can see new investments everywhere, kids still go on their own

I feel the same when I'm back in the UK (which is cleaner, has nicer and older streets and you can cross a road without risking your life). It hits when I go into a shop and the person behind the counter smiles rather than scowls and when a stranger on the train or buys smile and talks to you.

It passes after a while.

Home is where your cat is.

Life / Poetry and Poets of Poland [58]

Because men want to get laid everywhere.

Have you met many poets or philosophers?

Most of them look like they need some fresh air and exercise.

Hey, a-hole,

Grow up.

Life / Poetry and Poets of Poland [58]

Words that rhyme make me physically nauseous. Like twirling objects...

So much of human life makes you 'physically nauseous' that it's a miracle you have any stomach contents left.

was invented by guys who want to get laid but don't have enough money for a movie and dinner.

Tell that to Homer, Sophocles and Sappho.

Poetry is universal and here in Poland, there is both bad and good.

Food / Wax Bean Soup Recipes [29]

@nunczka

Sadly Nunczka passed away several years ago and won't see your reply.

My grandma calls it "Butter Bean Soup".

Very English too; traditional in the North. Butter beans are very versatile and make a nice soup, though I'd not use dill in it..

In Poland they're usually used a little differently but are always good.

Travel / Poland's Super Hub Airport [17]

What about Bucuresti?

A lot depends on the airline group. Warsaw gets people who fly in on Qatar Airlines and Turkish too.

As a hub, it's obviously smaller than the big ones like Frankfurt and Schiphol (ugh) but much nicer and less stressful than some of its rivals like Vienna, or Dusseldorf. Copenhagen is sort of a 'mini-hub' now and there are plenty of routes that are via either Warsaw or Copenhagen. Munich seems to be growing as a hub now and isn't at all bad.

the war presumably has gotten in the way of that

I've changed planes at the new one in Istanbul (horrible, as nasty and as totalitarian-looking as the new Berlin airport and even more expensive in the shops/bars) a few times over the past few months and each time, I noticed that around half the flight are from r*SSian provincial airports. They are really cashing in on the war.

Life / Specific Military to join? [13]

Can I join the Polish Navy without going to the Sea Coast?

If you join a navy you will find it quite difficult to avoid going to the 'sea coast' at some point in your maritime career.

Not from Germany they can't

Quite.

And there are already four major hubs in this time zone as well as several second level ones (including Warsaw which is growing organically as a hub anyway).

Life / Poetry and Poets of Poland [58]

Jaroslaw Iwaszkiewicz!

He is excellent.

I prefer Tuwim, and the translation that Pawian posted (the translator is slightly known to me and a few other posters here, and as I recall reads this forum sometimes) is absolutely spot on.

Iwaszkiewicz was bisexual and homoerotic

You've just described a huge chunk of the world's literary corpus.\

Classifieds / Apartment For Sale in Arlington, VA [6]

it sold for 725 in 2020, surely if he's selling for 380 cash that's a good investment?

Not my personal idea of quality living.
And to pay $530 Association fees

If he's putting it on here, I'd guess that there aren't people lining up on the kerb competing to buy it.

Not my personal idea of quality living.

Nor mine.

News / Polish Parliamentary Elections 2023 [933]

No need; I barely 'tried' at all and succeeded very nicely indeed.

Don't worry. Society as a whole 'tries' constantly to evolve. If social and political change, whether electorally in Poland or by mass communication frightens you so much now, wait until you're olde. The world, including of course Poland, will be unrecognisable to you.

News / Polish Parliamentary Elections 2023 [933]

Better than you did, and a very clear description of reactionary hysteria.

PiS and those of their tendency came before them make, as reactionaries always do, the very common mistake that people in developed societies are constantly moving forward, and the 'norms' whose loss terrifies them (which were never universal anyway) ceased to be true norms by the time they enter politics and within a couple of decades are seen as old fashioned.

This election could go in different ways. The war will have its effect as will the number of older and less well educated voters who died and the number of new voters who have grown up in a more outward looking and world, and a danger (for both PiS and Poland as a whole) is that the extreme hysteria and paranoia that they have done their best to whip up is both offputting to most people under 35 and not hysterical enough for the pond life who might be tempted to vote for Konya or other fringe ideologies.

rights for perverts, gender nonsense, and all around woke bullshit

Nutty rants like that are one of many reasons that reactionary social conservatism always loses in the end.

this is why I consider

Except they don't believe at all in protecting workers from exploitation at all, do they. LOL.

But

You're trying to create a binary split between two absolutes. Politics (the kind involved holding office rather than just fantasy) is not absolutist and PiS, as you know, are a right wing party, deeply socially reactionary, with some economically left wing elements that they've derived partly from Christian social justice and partly since they are of course a vote winner.

Giving

Returning.

And of course Platforma aren't enriching themselves personally any more or less than PiS activists are. PO are rather too much to the right for me, essentially centre-right like wet Tories, however their social policies are certainly more in line with mainstream opinion than PiS' hysteria about Teletubbies and abortion.

But like the pigeon needs both wings to fly

I don't much like the scouts and supply line analogy however this sentence is a good one.

Most developed societies are relativistic rather than absolutist. Even in a fair society where the people control the means of production and where extremes of wealth and poverty are rare there is still private business.

Regulated of course, however only a fool or a sociopath would want all business and finance to be unregulated.

your book PiS is left wing?

Did anyone say that? They are right wing on most issues.

For me left wing means

For the rest of the earth's population however, it relates to economics and equality.

You know next to nothing about

Far more than you think. Your post however shows you have a very jaundiced take on those times.

Some real spite, bile and hatred here, all of it from people who identify here as right wing. Says a lot, doesn't it. And meanwhile, no matter how hard they work, whether they want to or not, there are people (who don't care if they live or die) making more from their jobs than they themselves are earning.

News / Polish Parliamentary Elections 2023 [933]

Still with these thatcher era definitions of ideology eh? o.k let's play, PiS is not right wing

Read my words carefully.

Anyway, though some of PiS policies are economically left (left/right aren't 'Thatcher era terms'; they arose over 200 years before she was born and are still current now she's burning in hell).

The Polish ultra-traditional right, from Dmowski's day until now have always looked east in some pan-savic fantasy of Ciemnogrod, whereas more forward-looking politicians have looked west, south, north or indeed anywhere except russia.

And those politicians in Poland who are best disposed to russia (we all know who they are) ar on th right rather than the left.

- I'm so confused by what left and right means

The right wing want their chums to make more money from your labour than you do and don't care if you die from lack of money. The left wing want us and those around us to enjoy the full fruits of our labour.

Before 2014 PO was a pro-Russian party

They were never pro-Russia.

In Poland, it tends to be the right wing that looks east to Ciemnogrod.

News / What should Poland do with the problem of Belarus? [1800]

The target is PiS

Their target is Poland and the other western liberal democracies who oppose russist autocracy and ultra-conservatism.

Nothing to do with PiS. PiS isn't Poland and Poland isn't PiS.

Study / "MAGISTER" OR "MASTERS DEGREE" - ARE THEY THE SAME? [75]

I want to say it my way. The Magister Degree is because of the Magistration Freedoms that the Kingdom of Poland libertizes

Quite a few countries use that term to describe masters degrees. Nothing to do with the old Kingdom of anywhere.

Is 'libertises'' even a word?

News / Poland has accepted over a million Ukrainian refugees. Why does the EU keep telling propaganda about Poland? [304]

Poland has accepted over a million Ukrainian refugees. Why does the EU keep telling propaganda about Poland?

They don't. They agree, disagree, argue, support each other and formulate policy. It's politics and the nature of a union.

Nobody doubts Poland's commitment to Ukraine. Nor is there 'propaganda' against Poland. Sometimes people come on the forum claiming that Poland is somehow 'misunderstood' whereas in fact Poland is as 'understood' as any other major European country. It is not Shangri-la. People can learn about it; and the fruit of the learning rarely leads to the same point of view that is held by the most ultra-conservative and reactionary posters.

hey have to be:

1. Muslims or,
2. Black or,
3. Anyone hating West

Don't be silly.

Anyway, mass population to and from Poland and most other inhabited places will only increase and continue long after the lives of anyone here today.

And so the media is effectively propaganda for Islamic interests

You wouldn't think so to read most of it. Then again, you're wrong.

News / Polish MEP Korwin-Mikke's latest outrage, insulting women [216]

Korwin Mikke still believes that the female role is to take care of the house, kids and husband.

All those talented women staying at home while the men, regardless of talent and ability, go out to earn.

For a mathematician and bridge player, he's not very logical.

I suspect he just says these things to annoy people. Never forget the time that guy stabbed himself in a restaurant toilet and blamed it on a 'mystery Chines assassin'.

there is a serious danger of being bite by a tick in poland everywhere

In the forests, not a much in towns.

You just need to be careful. I've not been bitten by a tick in three decades.

I'd say that in a democracy it does matter what people think and want

I'd say so too, and indeed politicians in developed societies spend a lot of time and money on gauging the public mood.

Off-Topic / What's your connection with Poland? Penpals. [595]

And pretty well everywhere though (I did two at a rough 80s comp in England). I've never never understood why so many Yanks are monolingual.

No, it is not. But if you add that he never lived abroad , doesn't seem to even go on holiday to different countries etc

People criticised Marek Bella for that however he was good at his job. With Jaro, he talks about vision for the future but as you say has a very limited perspective. I suspect he gets off on being a big fish in a small pond.

I'd hope that most of them are since all except trumpet and bush 2 are well educated.

doctors would come at least.....

Sorry, we nicked them first.

All that issue arise because Germany pushed with introduction

We're all victims of both our history and mediocrity too. You are, we are and they are.

I'd still like to see key businesses in Germany owned by Polish companies and suspect that idea would be less popular in Germany than Poland.

Poland exported more to Germany

As you know, who owns the key industries is important. And of course, Poland is more than agriculture.

Is there a precedent anywhere for capital not flowing to the centre?
