Genealogy / Former Poland PM Donald Tusk - A Kashub or a German. [71]

'According to', 'we don't know', 'supposedly', 'an implication', 'no documents exist either way' etc etc. 'Is shrouded in mystery' sounds like a conspiracy. Geez, Ukrainians sided with the SS. Are they now German too? ;)

It doesn't matter how you describe yourself. I could describe myself as a Russian but who would I be fooling? According to, LOL. That says it all. Stick to the facts, guys.

Life / New Polish generation prefers black culture? [145]

Lyzko, more likely than not, yes.

Joe, the new generation, like any, are influenced by their peers who were largely cut off from music like Motown, Blues and Soul. Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye and so many others were left unheard for the most part. Although not majorly into the music stemming from black culture, I have a healthy appreciation for so many black artists due to spending a lot of time with my old man and his music collection. We must remember also that, despite having communism, black American artists were far more in the spotlight in Britain than in Poland. Another salient point is that we had/have many more commercial outlets in GB. Music is expensive here, horribly so at times. It's not that easy to come by.

There could be many reasons for favouring black culture but a lot of it has to do with escapism. It's not that rap music is their no1 choice, it just represents a change in thinking.

You can still hear rap music blaring out from car stereos here. I was making this point to my wife last night, that there is more and more emphasis on English-language music. It's almost like Poles seem to think they have nothing of their own to offer and look beyond.

UK, Ireland / Warning to British people visiting Poland!! Don't get drunk and smash the place up! [453]

Poles, of their own admission, see the lack of tolerance here and we need to judge by the standards of the reasonable man. There is often no call for their griping. It's often just a distraction to their petty lives. People need new causes to get into and there is much evidence for this. Some need to turn their heads away more.

There were plenty of news stories on it, JM. Also, my fellow Scotsman went with an American friend, who lives in the neighbouring city, to Kraków. He likes a good drink and light atmosphere but he was sickened by the group of Scottish lads there that were obnoxious. Rarely does he call people obnoxious. It is those types that give Brits a bad name.

There is this tendency to shout your piece and stuff everyone else. Many are not good listeners either. Before you actually finish giving instructions to them for a task, they are off. There are many gibberers here in Poland. Motormouths that speak ten to the dozen and they irritate me.

OK :) :)

I think we need to be absolutely clear what we are referring to, Johnny. I have nothing against people having fun and using the entertainment options there. It's the complete lack of self control, vomiting and yelling like madmen that upsets Cracovians. Fair's fair in that Poles enjoy London and British nightlife so so should we. However, how often do you read reliable stories about Poles disrespecting the local area? That's not to say it doesn't happen but....

Yeah, the balcony phenomenon is one I've heard about more than experienced. I hear the lads above my parents-in-laws' place and they could tone it down a lot. However, the housing estate is generally quite quiet, safe and people are well behaved.

Do you want a thriving boor culture in Kraków, Johnny? That's what you seem to be advocating. It is interesting to quality tourists. It's a major attraction for Japanese tourists or are they not quality enough for you? Those who organise stag tours are select individuals so should be forced into assuming more responsibility, you are right on that point, J.

One dislike is the door slamming aspect. In my last flat, I had to get the landlord to put his foot down to stamp it out. I don't mind if the wind blows it and you miss catching it before it shuts but these morons actively slam their doors. It's like they are frustrated but they don't seem to realise that they live in a shared block. It isn't called 'wspólnota' for nothing. After moving out last November, it has been the same in the new place. My wife, rather than rise above it, does the same and her dad reprimanded her for doing so. How widespread is this in Poland? I get the impression that there are many spiteful and selfish sorts that fail to acknowledge the effects of their actions on others. Am I wrong? I would love to believe that the majority don't do this but I think, given the mentality of quite a few of those that live in blocks, that it is quite common.

That's the beauty of English :)

Anyway, back to the topic. One of my old uni friends had a party in Kraków and the lack of respect shown was horrible, he said. He didn't want to be a part of it. Some Brits see it as a payback for what they perceive as Poles polluting their country. He was disgusted at their attitude. Tit-for-tat BS.

It's not as common, no.

Life / Why Do You Love Poland? [907]

You love your girl, not Poland. I wouldn't say I love Poland and nobody can love sth that is so broadly encompassed. I like many things here, yes.

I love the market square idea. It gives a relaxed feeling and one of class :) :)

Love / Polish women are the most beautiful in the world! [1718]

Oh, there you go :) :) That's the more likely scenario. Although Kash pours it on rather thick, I see his point that vanity isn't in short supply here. People quickly turn ugly when the vanity button is pushed.
