News / Presidential elections 2025 - the race has commenced!!! [665]

We have to get on with it but if we face five years of "he said, she said "in the court system, that will finish PiS off and possibly PO too.

The map look likes that for 20 years and obviously since 1815. But I think the system can only withstand maybe another 10 years of that - disparity between tax receipts and voting patterns is so big now that it will start to threaten OMOV. Every 2 years I wake up wondering why we should continue to put up with huge fiscal transfers to villagers who will clearly vote for any donkey wearing a PiS rosette.

Despite everything I think there have been some solid economic achievements last 2 years - taking the state companies back towards sanity, good growth in investment, strong zloty, low unemployment. Inflation remains a problem though and I haven't believed the official figures since about 2019

Maybe a few of them do - vape shop owners and self employed Uber drivers. But polling data shows that business owners and high earners voted heavily for Trzaskowski

One of the most shocking data points is that employees voted heavily for Nawrocki - 63 percent. I guess that includes many workers in factories and small business that have developed and prospered under EU membership

But PiS did try to hold on to power in 2023 - dithered for months before allowing the government to form.

Attitude among the educated, the taxpayers, the hard working and the optimistic in Poland today is resignation but that's it's only 5 years, lets get on with it.

PiS, like most right parties have replaced their dying voters with a new constituency - bitter young men. There are plenty here on this board. Now there is a few years of reflection while we work out how to sell democracy to the basement dwellers - not easy as AI and outsourcing start to reduce job opportunities at entry level

Do you have anything to say about the market ? Or do you only comment on trans issues ?

So the zloty unsurprisingly isn't very keen on the election of inexperienced and corrupt fools. But should recover when foreign investors realize he doesn't have much power. I do expect a permanent knock to some of the state companies, etc., as the government was doing good work in ridding their boards of the sinecures and pig farmers

I doubt we will know until Tuesday and I can imagine a bit of law fare afterwards.

But the high turnout should put Trzaskowski over the line. Probably there are still queues in a few polling places

Nope.

6 choices Ptak. Hurry up though - it's almost two months now we are waiting

This is the markets thread. EU and US tariffs are both bad for the market.

For those outside the US, note that the budget bill passed a few days ago includes some serious extra taxes on foreign shareholders of US assets, up to 5 percent increases each year for 4 years.

It's a weird policy since Golden Cow wants to encourage inward investment to the US, but I am a bit skeptical that he read the 1000 pages of the bill

Was once stopped in the Sobieski bringing a legit girl to my room - a friends with benefits situation. The security guard on our floor, demanded her ID and presume wanted to make a few zeds out of it. Instead, I submitted a vigorous complaint the next day and got a decent upgrade next visit.

Yes, I agree that it is common practice or rather was because that kind of thing stopped in about 2005 when the profession went online

Life / Owning a house in true countryside of Poland - stories [692]

It would only be a few hundred zloty per year tax.

However, there are quite heavy restrictions on buying farmland or rural plots over one hectare. You need to Google that - there are plenty of property websites, which will explain the restrictions.

It's 2025 - some public figures will have tattoos. I used to have a problem with it but I don't any more

Rest is correct though - this guy is completely unprepared for senior office. Trzaskowski has to get his vote out next week

Other things would make them happy I guess

In the case of my wife it is me cleaning and refilling the coffee machine before she wakes up

Count your blessings Alien - you never know when bad times will come

Happiest I think I was just after university - not in debt not much money but enough to go to concerts and watch football, casual girlfriend who was fun, plenty of time for hobbies and exercise

Off-Topic / Pop A Cork - Wine [440]

I'm a complete ignoramus on Gin. Google led me to Tanqueray for cocktails and I like the taste. Wife used to live a G&T but less so since kids arrived, she is normally using Bombay Sapphire

for French Auchan is definitely better but Lidl, Aldi and Biedronka all plenty of value under 30 zloty and a few decent bottled in 30-40

I would advise against trying Rossmann for wine ! They are great at what they do, but wine isn't one of those

Sunday was just about warm enough to grill kaszanka and had it with a Bordeaux, Chateau Laussac, think I picked it up in France. Good accompaniment and also decent with a coffee and some cigarettes

Time for a one month check on my stock tips and they are doing well

Bank Pekao +13%
Nike +11%
Swatch + 10%
Essilor +2%
Apple +0.5%
Kraft -2%

Overall a gain of 6% if you are measuring in local currency or 8% if measuring in crappy USD which has declined strongly v Swiss and zloty.

Market growth 2.6% - so I have comfortably beaten that.

Bobko's tips will take off if the oil price recovers but it's been a slow start

Gazprom +2%
Surgutneftgaz 0.5%. I will take a look at that when the war finishes

Ptak still didn't submit any picks. Not sure why us he is a man who can confidently put down 200,000 bucks at a time to take advantage of market fluctuations.
