I'd guess when Ruskies invaded Crimea?
There were no US army units in Poland and no NATO installations before 2014 Russian invasion of Crimea and later Donbass. Only then we asked the Americans to send troops here (which they reluctantly did, it was Obama's term after all).

If not for Russian chimpouts of 2014 and 2022 there would not be a powerful US and allied presense on Russian borders. Finland and Sweden would still be neutral and German defence expenditures around 1% of GDP, slowly disarming its military.

Russia brought the current change on itself.

Countries that did not use the short window of opportunity to join NATO have either been invaded and partitioned by Russia (Moldavia, Georgia, Ukraine) or vassalized (Belarus). So far NATO is the only and best way to keep Russia away from us.

Unlike conquering Ukraine beating Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia would be a cakewalk, even for the corrupt and incompetent Russian army, these countries barely have any military forces. Nah, Russia turned friendly neighbor into a hostile one by constant aggression. The best Ukraine can do is do everything to join NATO and the EU and benefit from the security of the former and the relative prosperity of the latter. UK literally cant do long range operations anymore without begging for help from an ally because they just sold the last of their naval supply ships to middle eastern countries.

Probably both convicts do not meet the conditions for pardon and will be declined. Thing is, the opinion of the Prosecutor-General is in no way binding the President's hands.

Thing is, government supporters don't want these two freed so each month they spend in jail is a win. And the Prosecutor General can claim that everyone is treated equally and politicians don't get a pass. Even if President Duda finally pardons them against the opinion of Prosecutor General and the courts, Law and Justice will get to exploit their 'political prisoners' angle for a few more months. In this way both sides achieve their political gains. The only ones that lose are Kamiński and Wąsik. The former will have to suffer several months of separation from alcohol, the latter - from double meals.

Regardless, the PO-TD-L thought they'd easily make a fool of the President, but they were wrong as he - in his acuteness and cunning - had beaten them to it.

The president, who invited both guys into his palace and broke bread with them, can pardon them any time he wants. They could be released immediately. And, FYI, he is now vigorously "preparing" to do just that. But for this or that reason he decided not to use the instant procedure, but the one that requires the (non-binding) opinion of the Prosecutor-General (which post is now held by one of his political opponents). So even if the opinion is negative, the President can still pardon them. But has to wait for the opinion. Which he didn't have to do if he decided to use the instant procedure instead.

Because he and Kaczyński don't give a sh*it if they are in jail or not, they just want to maximize political profit from the situation. Duda transferred the case to the Prosecutor General's Office and the courts as a political ploy. Probably both convicts do not meet the conditions for pardon and will be declined. They will stay in prison, but it will be propagated by PiS and Duda that it's because of anti-Polish courts and the minister, and the True Pole Duda did everything he could.
