History / Polish treasures in Sweden? [18]

@passivus
I think there have been some attempts to regain these goods but as usually in vain -just like in case of other exhibits stored in museums worldwide.

As for the loot, a hunting horn made of a horn of the last auroch living in Poland was looted. I don't know if there is any statue of an auroch among the exhibits.

I think they also stole some valuables from Krzyztopor - I must have read about it somewhere.

But they left some cannon balls at Jasna Góra. You can still see them.

History / MAP OF POLAND IN 1880'S [95]

Kujawsko pomorskie wasn't in Russian partition so I don't think it's the place.
Perhaps one of these places
pl.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Czestków

Or somewhere in former eastern territories of Poland -present day Ukraine, Belarus and Lithuania.

Life / Do you know these characters from Polish movies? [223]

Franek Dolas with Hans in the background :D

I have also seen Czarek from 13 posterunek.

And characters from Hydrozagadka and Miasto 44. But I don't know their names so the floor is yours.

How I Unleashed the Second World War is just great :)

Another easy one but one of the most unforgettable characters in Polish films I guess.

Bogumił, Bogumil, Bogumił
Co, Basiu, co?
A nic. Ja tak z przyzwyczajenia.

I felt sorry for Bogumił. She was a hag (IMO) and he was such a decent guy. And all of this just because another guy got into a pond to pick up some waterlillies. Had he loved her, he'd have stayed with her.

@Lenka
Bohun appeared after I had started typing the post :)
Another easy one but I really like this actor.

That's Bogusław Radziwiłł from the Deluge.
There's a great video of the scene with winged hussars in battle from the film and the main theme from Pan Wołodyjowski where you can see him.

@Lenka
That's of course Bohun from With the Fire and Sword. As someone once put it, Helena chose Skrzetuski and the rest of the women chose Bohun. Domogorow played the character in such a charismatic way that people chose to forget he was a crazy murderer.

As for the German typist he is actually addressed by his name in the film. Watch it for the sake of having a laugh :)
As for the dog, well I googled now both Szarik and Cywil and as pawian said it must be Cywil.
But googling stuff might give you some information you don't want to know like the fact that the dog that played Szarik was stuffed after it died :/

Now how about this lovely lady?

@mafketis
That was actually autocorrect - I meant 'I'd rather see''. :)
But you're right, I don't think it's necessary to show the execution.
Still the best part of the series , imho, was Kwiczoł :)

Now who's he?

@pawian
Lol. No. I'don't rather see Janosik before the execution; )
As for Olbrychski, in one interview he told an anectode about the times after Pan Wołodyjowski was released. He noticed two pretty ladies following him and then one said: Jaki on jest ryży;)

I just can't upload a pic here. It's of a character from a different film.

History / The reasons of Polish pride? [112]

@Rich Mazur
And again you prove you know nothing about Polish history.( So there was no women fighting Nazis, hmmm )And that you're a bitter coward.

Now go and cry that Polish women have the right to vote. I'm sure your boyfriend will comfort you.

And going back to the topic. I'm proud Polish women got their right to vote in 1918 :*

History / The reasons of Polish pride? [112]

@Lenka
At least we know how certain people would behave when their was attacked.
Welcoming the enemy with their arms wide open stupidly thinking that would save their lives.

Yeah, you're right. Most Poles would die for their homeland.
And I'm so glad we're not like you.

Michał Wolodyjowski loved women as much as he loved his motherland. First that lost love of his which led him to be a monk (memento mori and Zagłoba and Ketling's plot ), then Krzysia and Basia. And then he gave his life for his motherland. And the final scene of the film.

Honestly speaking, if it's ever on tv I just watch the beginning (monastery) and the ending (the funeral).
As for the second character, I'll give some clues. She was the love of the title character from a tv series made in the 70s. He acted against the law, yet he was a very honorable man.

I actually loved Quo Vadis but couldn't get through the Deluge.
Olbrychski played in all Trilogy movies. Interestingly enough, they were filmed in the reverse order so to speak so the last book was filmed first and Olbrychski could play the father of the character he portrayed in the first film.

Lomnicki was a great actor -the feud in the Deluge is just great.
As for the red haired character he isn't originally Polish :)) He's not Russian, German, Jewish or Ukrainian either.

Travel / What is the ugliest city or town in Poland? [89]

I love Kraków but I don't mind Warsaw either.
I respect the way Warsaw was rebuilt from ashes. Just like there's something both sad and grand about the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier - just few arcades left from the Saxon Palace.

And for people who don't know what happened in 1944, I guess it's hard to say the old town was actually rebuilt.
As for Kraków I went again last year. I could breathe somehow and still loved it. We went there with some foreign friends of mine and they loved it, too.

As for modern glass buildings anywhere, I do prefer them to old communist concrete buildings. I have seen some old buildings from the 70s or so renovated in such a way and I like it.

Genealogy / What does my Polish name mean? [402]

I used to know a couple called Kliks.
As for how popular it is
nlp.actaforte.pl:8080/Nomina/Ndistr?nazwisko=Kliks
As for its meaning I don't know, it might be a Polonised version of a German surname considering the surname's distribution or a Polish surname with an obsolete meaning.

Once I met a lady called Lux - and that was probably a transcription of Luchs.

Food / What Polish foods and brands do you miss when you go to other countries? [216]

As I said before shipped fruit and vegetables don't taste as those grown locally. And that was my point.
Have you ever heard how fruit and vegetables are shipped? For example bananas are picked not fully ripe, then they use conservatives and transport them abroad. If you see some sort of white stuff at the end of the fruit, it means they used too many conservatives.

Also compare the taste and smell of tomatoes and strawberries grown locally and those that have been refrigerated for shipping.
I've had for example melon in Poland and in Italy. And the taste is different. And the distance between Poland and Italy is not that big.

We can easily get strawberries and other fruit from supermarkets all year long but the taste is just different. Not to mention, frozen stuff. Of course, they're good source of vitamins in winter (if stored properly) but they're not the same.

So what local fruit and veggies can you get where you live?
