Law / Weapons laws in Poland. Carrying a concealed handgun? [918]

My personal belief is that US citizens are living in fear.

I think you're right and that fear,at least at the moment, does not exist in Europe.
Americans just don't seem to be able to grasp that. And I say that as someone who is really fond of the many Americans I know.

Now car crashes that's a different matter

Yeah,Poles kill more people with cars than with guns..... :-(

This is true.
I don't understand the American obsession with guns.
Maybe it is partly because their society is so violent compared to Europe.
Having said that, the recent rise in knife crime in The UK is a concern.
You don't need a gun to kill.

that sound does not need translation.

Problem is Rich that it does need translation.
We in The UK unfortunately or fortunately, depending on your point of view, cannot access guns as easily as you can in The USA.
So that sound actually means nothing to us......just sounds like someone is emptying their dustbin.....

Life / Prejudice about Poles; Poland has changed [39]

They have,in summer I used to leave our kitchen door open to let cool air in at night.
One night I heard someone come in and just thought it was my daughters boyfriend letting himself in.
I went to the kitchen to greet him and saw a hooded yob escaping. My son and I gave chase, nearly got him but he got away.

A couple of years later we found out it was a guy my daughter had known years ago, because he approached her and apologized.
He was a petty drug dealer and was being chased by The Police and saw our house as somewhere to hide.
It transpired that The Police caught him and he did time.
I lock that door now.......

I have lived all my life in London and never been burgled.
Had a window smashed and stereo stolen out of my car once, but that was it.

Food / What do non-Poles think about eating the following Polish foods? [1450]

Are all socialists obsessed with other peoples political views?
What has my politics got to do with my comment on your dislike of cabbage?
Barmy!
My wife is Irish,we both enjoy boiled bacon with potato and cabbage.
Food we grew up with, maybe you did not grow up with cabbage as a staple part of your diet?
THAT is why I question your Polish background.
Nothing to do with politics.

Genealogy / What does my Polish name mean? [402]

My grandfather was born in Poland and used the surname Roder after he arrived in the UK. Is this a polish name?

Roder(Roeder) is a Germanic name but there seems to have been quite of few in Poland.

Have you ever been to Whitby? Splendid place, very scenic and fresh fish off the docks. I had fish and chips sitting by the river, very tasty!

I think Fish n Chips from Yorkshire are the best there is,Cornwall comes a close second.
Salt and vinegar yes, tomato ketchup no.
But each to his own taste..... :-)

Without the eggs, yes. I've tried it with the egg and it was inedible :(

Raw meat, with or without raw egg is inedible....I tried it once as a kid and threw up.
I am someone who has eaten horse meat, frogs legs, caviar, duck, rabbit, pate de foie gras, sushi, plenty of tripe and extremely runny and smelly French cheeses,so I have a strong stomach.....raw meat,NO!!!!!!

Genealogy / Which Polish first names are considered unpopular / obsolete in Poland? [124]

But it seems almost all of those males remove the "-vowel + sław" part and replace with "-ek", and so they're calling themselves "Jarek"

It was always explained to me that doing this was to make the name "More Familiar",in the sense of friend or family and to shorten the name.

I get the first part, but the shortening I struggled with.....especialy with my uncle Zenon.....who was always called Zenek....

There are quite a few names of Polish people I know that sound very weird and old fashioned in English.
Especially some female names,all the women I know with these names are under 40,so not that long ago;
Edyta
Marta,
Jadwiga
Genowefa
Agata
Beata

And for the boys, how about Miloslaw? :-)

Travel / Are Polish people as unfriendly as Slovaks? [84]

Not at all.I just don't think you are a true patriot in any way.
You may love Poland, but you are willing to sacrifice her in the name of diversity.

I take your for word for that, but I don't know.
But certainly they watched Czech TV and listened to Czech Radio.
I have been told that younger Slowaks are finding it harder to understand Czech.
I employ Poles and Slowaks and the Slowaks can speak and understand Polish, they even get by,just, with Bulgarians.
But The Poles can't understand The Slowaks when they are talking amongst themselves.

I guess he meant sarcasm ..

I did,but was not sure that he would understand.

PS: I have two Slovak friends and they understand me when I speak Polish.

That is normal.Slowaks have a wider perception of language than Poles because of their long unity with Czechs.

Either you are using "Double Humour" or you are
completely wrong......the young Poles and Slowaks I know have a very similar attitude to life.
Work hard,party hard.

History / Unforgettable quotes about Poland and Poles from Polish and world`s history and culture [99]

He was just a Polish emigré in France

There were thousands of them, and not just from the upper classes.
Many Poles came to France between the wars to work in the mines.
To this day you will find many Polish sunames all over eastern France from the Pas de Calais to Alsace.....most of them have little Polish culture and don't speak Polish but they are Polish descendants.
