History / Heritage of partitions still present in Poland [107]

I have been to Poland countless times.
Never lived or worked there, but besides holidays, spent long periods with family all over the country.
Western Poland is more affluent than Eastern Poland.
But I think large parts of Southern Poland is very affluent too.
I think you are wrong to equate affluence and perhaps insinuate educational levels with how people vote.
They tried to do that in The UK about the Brexit vote and it has backfired big time.
I think that how people vote goes much deeper than affluence and education.

If I told you the truth, you would go crazy and have to be taken to the lunatic asylum

Not the sort of response I would expect from a man who teaches children for a living.
Idiotic.

All partitions powers erected various structures in their zones, many of which are put to a good use today

And your point is?
Whilst I think this thread is interesting I am a bit concerned about your motives for starting it.

News / Years of Poland in the EU - assessment of pros and cons [1199]

The truth is it was easier to get an American visa than British one before the EU accession

Where do you get your information from?
Some sort of "Dark Side Wikipedia"?
All bollox....it has always been harder to get into The US than The UK.

> Polish GDP could grow faster without EU extensive regulations

So true. And this is true for many EU members.
It is such a shame that more people cannot see this fundamental and basic truth.

News / Years of Poland in the EU - assessment of pros and cons [1199]

You, as a businessman who employs people, also Poles, will you say you didn`t profit from Polish access?

I have profited from cheap Polish workers, cheap Slowaks, cheap Romanians, cheap Bulgarians and cheap Indians.
Doesn't mean I think it is right.
I don't believe in governments imposing a minimum wage either, because now, that is all that is on offer.
A free market is better for unskilled workers because companies will offer more competitive salaries instead of the bare legal minimum.
Socialism does not work my friend.

@pawian
But you're taking an EU view of the situation.
Many people in their own countries can't comprehend why their own nations problems are not being addressed before other nations problems.
And it is a legitmate argument.
Why give money to beggars when your own children are starving?

Food / What do non-Poles think about eating the following Polish foods? [1450]

Not sure about every 7 years, but certainly, your tastes do change from a very early age.
I love things now that I used to hate and vice versa.
As a side note, Brazilian BBQ restaurants do some great cuts of meat, chicken livers and hearts are amongst them.

. Polish "wedliny" results in at least 20 percent higher incidences of bowel cancer

I am sad to hear that you suffered bowel cancer Doug, one of my uncles had it,he too ate a lot of cured meats.

But I and many people I know have eaten it almost daily with no ill effect.
Whilst I am sure the stats are right, if we did everything the doctors tell us, life would be very boring....
We all gotta go one day...the best thing is to do everything you want in moderation, I am sure that a contended life increases longevity.

Are you aware that lung cancer amongst non smokers is on the increase?
Sometimes, doing all the right things doesn't save you.

I once made a sauce from chillies, horseradish and (English) mustard powder. It took no prisoners!

That would have been fierce!!!!
Chillies are of course the hottest, but English mustard is even stronger than Dijon.....and add the Polish horseradish and next day is mainly spent in the bathroom.... LOL!!!

Life / What is Poland's view on obesity? How healthy, fit are Poles? [166]

You try and feed a poor family on a pot of lentils and potatoes...fgs life is bad enough..

Tough,I've been there, done that, many of us here probably have, you just have to bite the bullet and get over it in the hope that it will all work out.It did for me and I am sure it did for many others.

Just giving up is pathetic.

Isn't this one of the problems that the US has

I can't speak for The States, but no excuse in The UK.

the topic supposed to be about Poland

There are more reasons but I will leave you to think of them yourself...:)

You're right Roz,but they all lead back to stupidity.
Even poverty is no excuse, you can eat very healthily on a low budget.
Most food that is good for you is cheap.

That and unheathy food being cheaper, as you implied.

But it's not.

The lack of exercise is a huge problem,I agree.

Law / Weapons laws in Poland. Carrying a concealed handgun? [918]

Exactly,so I think the consensus is that we don't need more gun availability in Europe.
But if I was living in The USA or central or south america,I might have a different point of view.
