Genealogy / What it means to be Odrowąż? [14]

"Try to (only/just/until) it on your own"

Probably autocorrection at work or (translating/interpreting freedly)

See what you can do on your own until (you can pay for professional help).

Travel / Poland in photo riddles - part 2 [1680]

That sounds gross!

Au contraire!

I was going to say crawfish (so I could ask if they suck the heads in Poland) but yeah, probably a shrimp...

Genealogy / Polish-Ukranian roots and genes [72]

From what I recall less than 10 percent of the population can actually trace a genetic line back to their original homeland... (many more would like to claim such ancestry but genetic tests say no....)

Common family names like Cseh (Czech) Szerb (Serb) Horvath (Croat) and Lengyal (Pole) should be a clue as well (IIRC over 100,000 immigrants moved to Budapest from the Czech areas in the 19th century and became magyarized in a single generation - there was also some.... forced magyarization as well).

The later aren't even Slavic nations. Culture/religion and genetics is not the same thing

Well genetically most residents of modern Hungary are Germans and/or Slavs who've been magyarized....

News / What should Poland do with the problem of Belarus? [1800]

To be precise he claims that women are more even than men i

Rewriting history, the first story I ever saw about him (early 1990s) was him giving a speech where he claimed that women should not have the right to vote because they're too emotional and pay too much attention to the looks of candidates.... and if they're not too emotional then that's worse (for..... reasons).

He's either mentally ill or a Russian lackey (who longs to bring Poland back under the Russian yoke) his presence alone would make Konfederacja a bad joke with no future (along with most of the other Konfederacja MPs .... and most of their supporters).

a political party of the Konfederacja type is only able to target a relatively small percentage of the electorate

Well they hate enough of the electorate that they have no other choice....

great illusion is that Konfederacja is capable to appeal with their message to a big national audience

Yep. Most of their issues don't really.... resonate with a broad audience to the extent needed.

you will probably be back in Warsaw from London by then.

I really doubt that that will ever happen....

Real Estate / Termination of fixed term renting contracts-residential in Poland [26]

Why is in there interest do so?

Polish landlords..... are not the best that humanity has to offer.... it's not their fault entirely (massive housing shortages from the commie period lasted until well after 2000) but.... yeah.

News / What should Poland do with the problem of Belarus? [1800]

a lot of Belorussians had been just put off by Lukashenkos latest election fraud...he must have overestimated his people's humour...

Stupidity and hubris.... had he faked a 52 % or so win a lot of people would be angry and there would be some protests probably but they would die down. Had he been really smart (since Belarus has a 'first past the post' system) he'd have faked a result where he had 47 or so percent, not a majority but more than anyone else.

But he's fixated on the 80% number (some early election which he probably did win by that margin)

Every population has their breaking point and he found the Belarusian breaking point. I'm sure he has some level of support (around 40 percent or so judging from several sources) but he humiliated the public.

The younger generation is a lot more western (in general) leaning than the older Russian leaning population so if he manages to hold on to power then Poland might reap the benefit of a non-trivial number of smart young Belarusians (unless there's a crackdown on the border which I can see a Soviet fossil like Lukaszenka going for).

What aspirations do they have?

Good question..... I know enough to not trust mass media reports (or what gets said to western reporters and I can't read Russian* to get a direct picture) and I haven't known enough Belarusians to get a fix.

The Belarusian economy has essentially been held in a Soviet bubble with huge swaths in publicly owned companies and any move toward the west would have an initial very hard landing....

*I like the Belarusian language, especially in the version written in latin script but Belarusians are a lot less enthusiastic...

the EU was no big player in Ukraine

Well the 2014 protests began with the government snubbing the EU in favor of Russia (though I've heard EU enthusiasm has cooled a lot since then).

The difference is that Ukraine has .... European (if not EU anymore) aspirations while Belarus.... doesn't.

One video pointed out that unlike Ukraine there were no (or extremely few) EU flags in the Belarus protests... I hadn't noticed but when I checked, that was indeed the case.

Some interviewed strikers were painfully naive (reminding me of the attitudes of some in places like Poland in 1989 who assumed that after dumping communism they would reach prosperity in a few months...).

I wish the Belarusians well and hope they can avoid being reasorbed/annexed by the rapacious Russian empire...

Life / Cost of English Speaking Kindergarten in Krakow? [13]

it's not wise to keep your child out of the Polish speaking environment entirely

My take is he doesn't want the kid to get too attached (because they have.... ambitions to move westward....).

History / Poland rightwingers` bonds with PRL communist regime [191]

IF you.... think there is nothing wrong with ex-commies ... in the public and political live why would you bash PiS if they do that

It's not the policy so much it's the hypocrisy.... they say one thing and do another..... theyself-righteously slashed pensions of people who simply worked in prl structures while appointing some real prl scum to the government

hypocrisy - hipokryzja

As an outsider you will never understand.

And you're an insider.... in Poland? Linguistically and culturally you're British with some Polish ancestry....

you aim to bash PiS nothing more.

They deserve some bashing for their hypocrisy (which is worse than any other party in Poland).

They also deserve some bashing for their general cack-handed operations and the way they protect loyal incompetents (like the criminal Sasin).

Bashing PiS is only bad if you support them (like I guess... you do).

You cannot just choose one group to out as past commie traitors

and you can't blanket every person that had something to do with the government or party in the years 1944-89 as a "commie traitor"

PiS is the only major party that makes a big deal out of claiming to want to punish former communists but they're hypocrites since they ignore the former unrepentant communists among their own midst. The sight of Piotrowicz chanting 'precz a komuną' was enough to gag a maggot...

Lustration is a process that requires impartial and nuanced judgment... and by now is a dead issue except for a few hypocrites in PiS and a few fossils who are living in the past.
