Food / Goose meat anyone in Poland? [20]

I've done goose.....Tasty though.

Goose is probably my favorite poultry (duck in second place but duck fat is of no great use while goose fat is very useful).

A few years ago I made goose for a visiting relative who also found it delicious (and at first wasn't sure if it was really poultry and not some unfamiliar ungulate....)

Travel / Poland in photo riddles - part 2 [1680]

Why did I take this photo?

...you'd been stalking that hot fox on the sidewalk for months now?

more seriously, looks like a vanity plate (still pretty rare here) so maybe it has something to do with the person driving the car or the car itself? but cars are boring so....

Food / Hopless beer in Poland? [30]

Czech doesn`t if both have similar alcohol content?????

I'm not talking about exported packaged beer but the stuff on tap that they serve in ... hospody(?) the eating/drinking/socializing establishments in the CR. I knew someone who said he'd probably had 7 or 8 over the course of the day in Prague and didn't feel drunk at all while three Polish veers would knock him for a loop.

IME the first reaction of most residents of the British Isles to Polish beer is that it's too strong....

How do you estimate it that beer is too strong?

How many before you stop feeling a nice buzz and start getting that heavy drunk feeling....

Polish beer seems made to provide quick intoxication I prefer Czech beer which doesn't seem intended to make anyone drunk and is more a nice thing to drink with friends and food and if you try really, really hard you might get a bit tipsy.

Overall Polish beer is intended for genetic Slavs (roughly speaking) who on the whole metabolize alcohol (and painkillers) very quickly.... but for others the higher alcohol content restricts enjoyment....

Language / IS "MURZYN" word RACIST? [686]

are not "murzyn" but "mulatto"

Well mulatto is no longer used in English (at least not American English) and I haven't heard 'mulat' (or 'mulatka') used frequently enough in Polish to consider it a current classification.

I consider that group of people to simply be Polish (since I tend to think of culture and language as more..... relevant than genetics).

Obama who btw. was raised solely by his white mother of English descent.

African Americans are best understood not so much as a purely racial group but as a cultural and linguistic minority. Not all who would be classified as Black belong to it (Obama, who was raised more by his grandparents than his mother, is now a member but he joined the group as a young adult). There have also always been a few non-Black people who are de facto members.

In America no one would say she was 'of English descent' but simply that she was a White American (ethnic background has not been a big issue in most of the country) where I grew up it was completely absent despite my school being filled with what I now recognize as German or Irish or Czech or Italian names.

Language / IS "MURZYN" word RACIST? [686]

I mean native speakers, like Omenaah Mensah, Aleksancra Szwed, Krystian Legierski... also there was a tv reporter a couple of years ago but I'm blanking on her name...

Language / IS "MURZYN" word RACIST? [686]

If you have a good reason you would have supplied it already.

I'm not bothered by Murzyn but I am interested in the opinion of native speakers that the word is applied to. That might change my mind (because my mind isn't ossified and incapable of change).

Of course you do. I expect that treating people with courtesy and dignity must seem very alien to you....

Language / IS "MURZYN" word RACIST? [686]

Without plodding through 22 pages of comments, does anyone know what black (or partially black) native speakers of Polish think about 'murzyn'?

Their input would be most important in this question.

Language / Busha and JaJa [140]

I'm not gonna argue with any know-it-alls as I and my family lived this.

No one denies that busha was/is used by American Polonia. They just point out it is all but non-existent in modern Poland...

Has anyone heard of it being used by Polonia in other parts of the world like Brazil? Australia? (or somewhere else)?

Food / What Polish foods and brands do you miss when you go to other countries? [216]

I've only seen them smoked

A bunch of years ago I remember going on a trip (by car) to a town in the north (Kościerzyna) and all along the road there were people holding up smoked eels for sale.. Does anyone know if they still do that?

I've actually never had eel in Poland, only in sushi bars in the states (where I like it a lot).

Eels in 'liquor' and mash was honestly the most disgusting thing I have ever tried

Fun direction! The must disgusting thing I ever tried (off the top of my head) was ozory in a stołówka where I work.... I bit a piece and it was like biting your own tongue on novocaine (or someone else's tongue) I almost barfed and couldn't eat for a few minutes. Then I cut it up into the smallest pieces possible (which took a while) and it wasn't bad, not a favorite but quite edible. I've even had it a time or two since, but cut it up before eating.

Worst tasting was maybe fried catfish at a small town diner in backwoods North Florida.... absolutely vile.... (never been a big catfish fan though it's popular in the US south and this was just spectacularly bad).

Weirdest was brain tacos in Oaxaca Mexico. Thankfully there was almost no taste...

useless for the community to sue the culprit as he sort of advertised their proud stance on the anti-LGBT agenda

Yeah, there's a lot of cognitive dissonance going on there. Considering how.... proud they were to publicize their status initially now they're ashamed?

They don't get it both ways, you pass anti-LGBT ordinances you get all the consequences of that...

News / The Fur is Flying! Animal Rights in Poland [87]

Well the animal rights bills has passed but at what price for PiS?

While waiting for Duda, latent tensions in the ruling coalition have now come to the surface and threaten to break the government apart?

What do you think will happen?

Will the coalition crumble? Will PiS try to form a minority government? Will all this pass? Will PiS call snap elections (just after alienating a substantial part of the rural electorate?)

my first Polish food in Poland and man do I hate it

Tripe is actually a good way to get to know a country's cuisine beyond the tourist or cliche dishes.

Polish flaki are very good if made right (and a great hangover preventive) I like mixed with leftover kapuśniak.

The best flaki I've ever had was in a Mexican restaurant in Nebraska (of all places). Deep flavors with lots of chili and hominy....

Weirdest flaki I've ever had was Romania where they serve it in cream and vinegar...

Weirdest _name_ for flaki is Slovenia, where they're called vampi I love the idea of ordering vampi (the tripe itself was okay but nothing special).

the majority of Poles who oppose such things

Only the buraki and słoiki, city Poles are apparently fine with it.... on the map notice that Wroclaw rejected being an LGBT free zone.... so..... if you visit maybe safety underwear is called for....

Very close to the recent presidential elections.... what's interesting is not only the East-West divide but the city-country divide as no cities seem to have accepted this nonsense.

leading it into on-topic progress is beyond your capabilities

More like tha'tsnot his goal. All a narcissist wants is attention and so everything a narcissist writes is calculated to provoke a reaction (the stronger the better). He might be able to stay on topic but he gets lots more attention from gullible enablers. If you really want to get rid of him withdraw attention and keep ignoring him as his panic of being alone spirals to new and more insane heights.

We are talking about privileges' that some people would like

And yet.... you prefer to live in a country where they claim those privileges rather than brave catholic Poland....

Nothing else you say is relevant. Stated preferences (what people say they want) are trumped by revealed preferences (what they actually do).

Yeah, what are you gonna do about it stuck in whatever western country (that protects gay rights) that you prefer to Poland?

Poser. Just a lame poser, you are, hiding behind rhetoric about "soviets" who don't exist...

Poles hang more and more rainbow flags in solidarity with those that PiS have tried and failed to intimidate

I was walking the other day down a proto-hipster area (packed vegan restaurant) lots of tattoos and scooters and there were four in one street and a few others nearby.

It was kind of dumb of PiS (but I repeat myself) to create an easily available symbol of resistance to the government....

Aaah, that tiny Koi carp???

Not quite....

carp

Pierogis in Polish bars in Chicago are different than native ones?

The flour is different from that in Poland, the ingredients are all a little different... I don't think they'll be quite same as in Poland. It'll be close enough for most but not quite the same...

can be made with local ingredients

I remember trying to do some Polish dishes for a friend in the US and.... not the same. the little differences in local ingredients add up to major differences in the final product....

For carp, try Asian stores (best carp I've had was at a Vietnamese Tet celebration in Poland).

Euro Parl member was even so cheeky that he lied

Member of PiS.... lied..... no surprise there.

lied there are no LGBT free zones in Poland? That it is all a hoax invented by leftists?

Are they backtracking? It was a very odd direction for that party to go (considering their prezes....) but that set new standards of mendacity and hypocrisy...

Life / How are electric cars doing in Poland? [413]

Cars are way overpriced in Poland,

Good most of the country doesn't have the infrastructure for dealing with the cars that are already here....
