News / Poland's indecent junk capitalism? [53]

@Delph: "less protection" to employees! Why not slavery? It would be best for those employers;). I bet neither that employer nor anyone in his family have ever worked under garbage contracts. I "love" the "it's good for you but it isn't good for me" attitude.

Why not having Poles work for a plate of rice like in Asia?

Easy to talk when not concerned! ;)

News / Poland's indecent junk capitalism? [53]

@Delph: in other (at least EU) countries, people work under real work contracts so what's Poland's excuse? It seems that it's getting a hot issue in Polish politics now. There is even a movement (I don't know if we can call it "party") "Razem", which will run in the Fall election whose key idea is getting rid of such contracts. Of course they won't have anyone elelected but it is the beginning (as we can see inow n Greece, Spain...).

According to the news these days, garbage contracts are very frequent in the administration and I personally know several foreign companies in Warsaw (they happen to be among the top firms in the world) who employ more and more people on such contracts.

People have no security, no rights. Younger ones cannot start families, get credit to buy a flat, a car... People cannot get sick, cannot take vacation, don't have retirement ...

Yes, fantastic!

Since it does not exist anywhere else (or maybe in UK with their famous "0 hour contract" ;)) so what should it exist in Poland?

PS: I DO know what I'm talking about since I get around 75% of my income this way and fortunately I'll have retirement from my home country (although not "too high" since I did not work very long). Easy to be in favor of something bad when not concerned ;)

PPS: I agree with you with maternity and "education" leaves. Although education leaves are not paid in Poland, they are a hassle for employers but if we want a higher birth rate, it's necessary to help women have kids.... So what to do with women? I know a lot of employers who don't want to hire women they expect to get pregnant within the near future. Nobody can force them to and I would do the same ;)

Law / How to check if a company in Poland is active or not? or if it has any debts outstanding? [16]

@Paca; I doubt that financial situation especially if company has debts is available to all on Internet (I refer to what is done in some other EU countries I know).

Related:

Seeing the registration of a company in Poland (not S.A. one)

hi. i was just wondering if you can see the registration of a company? Is there some central database or something/

Yes, just google the full name and you'll find all sorts of info about the company.

News / Poland's indecent junk capitalism? [53]

@Harry: "on some jobs I do" : so it's not your ONLY source of income. When people work ONLY on garbage contracts, believe me, the situation is much different (no vacation, no sick leave, no retirement, no credit ....)

Unfortunately nearly all political parties don't give a d... about working conditions. As far as I know only the SLD would like to abolish garbage contracts. How do PiS feel about topic since most probably they'll be in office in 3 months?

I see from the above that hardly anyone knows re umowa o dzieƂo, umowa zleczenie, umowa autorskie but some don't live in Poland so they cannot know.

Yesterday GW had a table in order to summarize.

In brief (for those who don't know), such contracts are not LABOR law contracts but CIVIL law contract and thus NO benefits (no health insurance (umowa zleczenie does though), no sick leave, no maternity leave, no vacation, no unemployment benefits, no retirement and no credit since not steady work). In other words, people are paid ONLY when they work and of course they are not paid when public holidays....

According to a source given by Polonius, 3.5 million Poles work this way. It's a scandal but hopefully it seems to become a hot issue in Poland now and although only SLD (just to mention main parties) are against, such contracts, I'm sure that others shall have to deal with issue too.

How can they expect people to "live" this way? I know some shall say it's "better than ... nothing" but it's rather sad if the choice is between "very bad and worse" ;). And no need to say, when they say 'it's better than nothing", they talk about others because bad things are always for the others, not for "me" ;).

Love / Polish - Pakistani relationship. How it works in reality? Are Pakistanis a good men? [70]

A low and a high divorce rates can be explained in many ways.

Without talking about Pakistan, I know several Polish women in Poland who would love to divorce but since they are not independent financially , they do not. This is not only in Poland of course but everywhere in the world. To divorce, a woman needs to have her own money.

Love / Polish - Pakistani relationship. How it works in reality? Are Pakistanis a good men? [70]

@a high divorce rate doesn't necessary mean it's worse. It can be so because easier to divorce, because women are more independent and working.. not necessarily because people don't get along more than elsewhere. A low divorce rate can also be because women are not inpendent, or because it's taboo to divorce or also because a lot of people live together without being married so when they split, officially it isn't a divorce ...

Life / Single mothers in Poland [175]

@Johnny Reb: what I have understood from Polsyr's message is that this girl although catholic practising is not having a lifestyle as per the RCC's teachings. What I meant is that all the similar girls that I have met were not religious and therefore not in contradiction with RCC.

The girl is the total opposite of what RCC demand their followers to be.

What future for this girl and her kid? None!

Love / Polish - Pakistani relationship. How it works in reality? Are Pakistanis a good men? [70]

@Levi: when you come to Warsaw, let's have a drink (on me)! ;)

Of course it is common sense when people's culture/religion is too different, it cannot work out in a couple. A European/Western woman cannot be happy in a couple with a Muslim (= practising) man. I know some Muslim men in (maried or not) couples with European women and things are alright because NONE of them practises any religion. Pakistanis are hard liners so impossible for western women to be with them.

Zero chance of success so best not to waste time and be available for someone more suitable ;)

Study / Easy to find a part time job in Poznan? - applying for the University of Poznan of Economics [30]

How can you be a waiter without speaking local language? As to office work, forget it, they'll require Polish and thousands of Poles are after such positions. In order to be a teacher, you need to be qualified and when natives requested, Poles strictly limit hiring to Britons and to some extent North Americans and Autralians (but Americans and Australians need work permit).

So best bet is to expect not to find any work. Polish students need jobs and contrary to you, they speak Polish.

Sorry, life is not as in your dream!

News / Poland's indecent junk capitalism? [53]

@Polonius: I doubt it exists elsewhere. No matter what, it's becoming to be an issue in Poland (several demonstrations lately, a lot of coverage now everyday in GW, a new political movement called "Razem", people like A. Grodzka (;)) talking about starting a "Siriza" movement in Poland...) and I suppose the new governement shall put it on their agenda...

How can people who work be expected to "live" with no benefits of any kind? This was "ok" in the 19th century but not any longer in 21st century ;).

News / Poland's indecent junk capitalism? [53]

what I think worse than in Poland are the socalled '0 hour" contract in UK (for me: if 0 hour = unemployment ;)) and the "mini jobs" in Germany. I'm talking about "civilized" countries because no need to mention situation in Bengladesh, Nigeria or Bolivia ;).

I read yesterday that garbage contracts were also used by (Polish) gouvernment when hiring employees...

All this is not only not moral but also very dangerous for the society's stability.

What I also "like" is when I hear people around me (well off Polish executives from Western firms) saying that "garbage contracts are good for Poland". When I hear some crap, I reply "why don't YOU work under contract?" and no answer from them other than a small embarrassed smile ;).

Love / Polish - Pakistani relationship. How it works in reality? Are Pakistanis a good men? [70]

@Englishman: genes, culture, upbringing... always come back (quickly).

I have known some European and American girls who (briefly) married or had (brief) relationships with Muslim guys who happened to be educated, well off, who looked westernized but very soon they abandoned their Western appearance and behaved like men should in their culture. Women had to cover their heads, wear long sleeves, stop seing their friends, stop going outside (not out, but simply outside ;)), stop working....

Culture and religion are too far away from ours.

When someone born and raised Muslim does not follow their religion (often the case in Western Europe), mixed relationships or marriage can work out but when the Muslim (guy) follows his religion as it is the case for Pakistanis, a relationship/marriage is just impossible when women come from different backgrounds.

No need to start such a relationship since 0% chance of success.

UK, Ireland / My bad experiences with Polish neighbours in UK (not meant to offend) [173]

@Ryouga! witam! It is awful. I really feel sorry for you. You seem to be a nice guy. The ideal would be to move out but I suppose you cannot afford to and have no other choice than to put up with crap. Do get police involved whenever necessary! If too many complaints about them, they might be kicked out and hopefully replaced by decent tenants. As you are aware, the problem with your neighbors is not that they are Polish, the problem is that they are "white trash" and no matter their nationality, "white trash" behaves the same way.

Such people when foreigners lead to xenophobia, racism and hasty stereotypes.

Unfortunately for all religious nuts, women are to be dependent and to put up with any crap. A good woman for them stays in the kitchen, gives birth every year, goes to Church/mosque/sinagogue or whatever every day, slaves in the kitchen and shuts up.

When husbands are violent, they need to tighten their teeth and bear it.

Nice life indeeed!

@Ryouga: it is normal not to tell apart languages we rarely listen and to tell apart languages we often listen ;).

As to French, not necessary from France or Belgium, but also from Switzerland, Monaco, Luxembourg, Quebec (not to mention exotic places) and as to Germany, could also be from Switzerland and Austria ;).

@Ryouga: now in Moldavia they speak Rumanian (latin and not a Slavic language - when knowing another latin language, not hard to read/understand Rumanian). Before its independence, of course the official language was Russian. I know a woman from Moldavia in Warszwa and she only speaks Russian

Hungarian is completely apart....

of course, stereoypes are completely stupid and false but Wulkan meant to be funny. I sincerely doubt that a lot of Europeans (not to talk about others) can recognize let's say ... Lithanian from Latvian ;) and can tell a Slovak apart from a Pole for instance and it's normal. Since topic is England, it's normal that the huge majority of Britons cannot tell Eastern Europeans apart.

I know a lot of Poles who cannot tell a Spaniard from an Italian or from a Portuguese and here too, it is NORMAL.

Don't be paranoid! People don't know.

The only way to get rid of (stupid) stereotypes is to learn languages, to travel and to meet people and we can realize that we have a lot of common.

Estonian, Finnish and Hungarian are said to be of same family. I had a friend in the USA whose parents were from Estonia. She went to Finland to study and as she knew Estonian, she could learn Finish very quickly.

It's obvious that it's difficult to recognize Czech from Polish, Ukrainian from Russian, etc etc ...; but Wulkan meant to be funny.

Nevertheless, it's obvious that most Britons back in England cannot tell those guys from Eastern countries apart and it's normal. I can't either ;). I can tell a Russian from a Pole though.

@Polonius: most probably they don't

Personally, if I don't know, I can't recognize a Pole from a Czech from a Slovak from a Russian from an Ukrainian ;). On Saturday, my (Ukrainian) cleaning lady called her (Ukrainian) friend in front of me and when she hung up, I said to her "Oh, you talk to her in Polish!" and she replied "no, in Ukrainian". So a Briton in UK does not hear any difference betwen Polish, Hungarian and Estonian ;).

I used to know an English girl here (Wawa) and once when she was in England for a vacation, some one told her "Poland was something like Russia". It's true for most western Europeans, all these Eastern countries are all the same ;).

@Ryouga: this was the idea when opening market to Poles and the like. Poles work for 3 coins and Britons are unemployed

I have a friend in Belgium who told me a few years ago that she + family and the other neighbors were scarred at the arrival of Polish construction workers in their area. They were scarred to be attacked, raped, burglarized...

All those Poles give Poland a very bad name. My husband when in western Europe avoided contacts with Poles. These people's vocabulary is most limited and most often around 2 words 'k.." and "sp....".

In every country we have this "kind of people" but in the West, they stay home since they can receive welfare so they are not seen abroad, contrary to Poles.
