Language / Foreigners speaking Polish - examples. [71]

Between Polish and English there are similar things. Almost no Pole can get /ɔː/ or /ɜː/ anything like right and many struggle with /ŋ/ despite it being very close to ę.

Standard British"

There's no 'standard British' as such, and the term "Standard English" tends to refer to British/Aus/NZ grammar usage and spelling.

Your example of ugly would work better without the h; it's a short and clipped vowel in RP. I would use the same vowel as in wood.

Poles probably can pronounce British far more easily than
American English

Largely yes, however it's worth remembering that the two languages emerged and for most of their history evolved only a few hundred miles apart.

Lol

??

You sound like some one with little practical experience with firearm

Far more than I need or would like.

squat to do with transferring generational wealth in your family

Nor do firearms for 90% of people who use them.

You get your views of actual and mainstream firearm ownership out of a canned meme.

Don't make incorrect assumptions. We're not all urbanites.

definitely influences how we pronounce words

For sure. With the rz sound, it's as near as damn it the same as the /ʒ/ in pleasure.

wORd

I'd pronounce it /wɜːd/, as in nurse or bird.

We have many more schwa-type sounds in American English

Thinking about it, isn't the opposite more true? Or am I just thinking of endings, since in English English, pleasure, teacher, dollar, visitor, colour, all end in schwa.

Having guns has nothing to do with genitals

Yeah, right....

proper use

You're right about endangering others.

I'd add that killing animals or birds for anything other than food, self defence or on compassionate grounds is not in any sense proper use.

News / Military draft coming in Poland? [48]

an unsubstantiated supposition

It isn't an American 'debating club' and in any case you can't adequately dispute it.

Recent can be 40 or 50 years when talking about national policy.

Pawian deliberately ignored your question as he never did military service

One of the majority in PL who avoided it.

You used to be able to pay a doctor to say pretty well anything. One guy I know got an exemption from his national service because he got a doctor sign a statement saying his body contained no bones or arteries.

Did I advocate for Sport Killings?

I don't recall saying you did, however sadly there are those who do.

Even here on PF there have been people talking about hunting because they like holding a gun that's way bigger than their cóck and killing something rather than eating to survive.

Polonia / Polish bus crash in Croatia. Is there a fate? [229]

What's happening

Sad accidents.

I was just reading about the people who died in South Africa.

Unfortunately, although driving a bus is a hugely responsible job with people's lives in the driver's hands, the wages they receive rarely reflect that and it's hard to get people to do it for the money.

In the world of work, you get what you pay for.

Language / Game - guess Polish idioms/sayings in direct English translation [1756]

When I had aquariums as a kid

I had some goldfish. They (and the plastic tank they came with) came from saving up coupons on the back of Chivers jelly (like jello-o) packets. I remember feeding them ants' eggs. Then we got a cat and he fished them out of the tank one by one.

mispronunciation of the si, sz sound is

Yes, very much. Ci, cz as well.

rz-" "brz"

I never had a problem with that. As a native English it wasn't new to me since the rz sound of course exists in English as does szcz.

Off-Topic / Do you believe government clone people to help the elite conquer death? [44]

implant chips

What chips?

fake vaccines and fake boosters for the fake pandemic

None of these are fake.

insipid passivity and submission

None of them 'fake'

World events, riots, demonstrations, whatever, suggest that the levels of passivity and submission among humans have not noticeably increased.

Food / Replace meat with bugs - new trend in Poland [29]

consumers prefer natura

Perhaps, however what you see in the shops in Poland and elsewhere tends to be synthetic now.

Cheaper to make food additives in a vat somewhere rather than wring out beetles.

News / THE ARMY OF POLAND - THE REALITY [493]

Minister of Defense decided to halt some types of training in the Polish army

The Ministry of National Defence?

They did the right thing.

Soldiers sometimes die or are seriously injured in training (my friend was badly injured and had to leave the army due to a training injury) however safety should always be paramount to reduce avoidable risks.

5 deaths in one month is rather unusual

That's a lot. Presumably they're doing some particularly intensive training due to current circumstances.

Coca-Cola.

Foreign muck, full of sugar.

this thread would be dead

Most of them here wouldn't know a Grenache from a bottle of cough medicine.

The last wine I drank was Turkish. There are some good bottles from there plus a lot of middling ones.

Food / Replace meat with bugs - new trend in Poland [29]

we have been eating bugs for decades, as natural carminic acid

That's cochineal. Not much used now domestically however it still exists.

Anyway, we probably ingest lots of tiny bugs every day, especially summer.

Korwin Mikke

That guy is not so much a big as a louse.

mentally ill

I'd say that people who kill animals for pleasure are the mentally ill ones.

Dis you see that photo of the b1tch with the big hairdo posing next to a dead giraffe that she'd gone to Africa to shoot?

Why? How had that giraffe hurt her?

News / Military draft coming in Poland? [48]

a potential draft

They had compulsory military service until recently.

Most people did what they could to get out of it, often bribing doctors.

They were definitely American. You could tell by the fat guts and the baseball caps.

Off-Topic / Things you can't get used to in your new country [95]

Why store them?

Most people just cur the taters and use them. If it's a restaurant or canteen that need a lot they just put them through a rumbler to peel a lot in one go, (or peel by hand if it's the army - they call it spud bashing) cut them and put them in a big bowl of water until needed.

News / How will Poland be affected by WW3 which has now started [559]

There's no topic since WW3 hasn't started.

All probability says it will sometime, current events suggest this decade or at the latest next.

However it's not started yet so let's party like it's 1939 (or 1914 when they wore nicer clothes and had better music).

News / Ups and downs of the democratic government 2023-2027 in Poland [363]

@pawian
A friend of mine has just announced that he's standing in the local elections as a Konfa candidate (his poster with him and another guy on says 'kondederacja I bezpartijny' whatever that actually means).

I always knew our politics are different (he's a huge Ayn Rand fanboy) but what do konfa actually stand for? I've not followed their rise.

Are they really far right?

No, I am correct.
You would never hear a lady use that word where I am from.

Where you're from is quite different. They dislike the word cvnt and as far as I know rarely use the word cvnting.

rude wanker

One of my favourite words. We like it in the U.K. since it is often used affectionately.
