Work / Self-employed American living in Poland? Is it possible? [54]

Yes, I gather.
However, as we say, you can take the boy out of the country, but you can't take the country out of the boy!
When refugees first arrived on our shores after WWII, question, what did they leave behind? Answer: Everything
but their accent LOL

News / Will PiS be happy if AfD wins elections in Germany? [1440]

"Vom Volke der Dichter und Denker zum Volke der Richter und Henker" - Klabund aka Alfred Henschke

"From the nation of poets and thinkers to the nation of snitches and stinkers"
Should the AfD ever get their way, woe betide Germany, woe betide Europe!

As usual, you're either playing the Devil's Advocate, just playing dumb
or you're prevaricating once again and actually know what makes the AfD
extreme!

The AfD wants to cancel Holocaust education from all German school curricula
and in essence downplay the inestimably horrific nature of the Third Reich.

Isn't even that extreme enough for you??

As I've said before, Merz is between a rock and hard place (sitzt zwischen zwei Stuehlen). If he doesn't play both sides of the street,
he risks alienating his target base. On the other hand, if he kowtows solely to the left, he's cooked!

He's damned if he does and damned if he doesn't.

What you term cowards, are those frequently too mature to spout off exactly
what they think when they think it. It's called the edit button, pushed when it's neither
political nor accurate to blab the first thing on their minds.

Genealogy / The typical Polish look, or all Eastern Europeans [676]

Well, thank you, przylotnyptak, I take that as meaning I have preterrnatural observation skills:-)

How can I identify Poles?? Much as I described in my previous post; facial musculature, eye coloring
and hair texture. Most Polish men I've seen don't appear to have naturally wavy hair, I'm excluding Polish-
Jewish men.

Exceptions though always abound.

Rich, The Federal Republic most certainly does struggle WITH freedom
in the sense that even today, references to Hitler, however casual or ironic,
much less a mock Hitler salute, will land the offender in the clink for an
indefinite period of time.

In the US, such an offender will be reviled and probably attacked verbally or
physically, yet we still allow such a person the right to freedom of expression.

In Germany, this is still not the case.

Why only recently, a seemingly harmless pun landed a Duesseldorf teacher in hot water,
albeit spoken after work hours! It went something like this and was oft heard in private circles
during the early years of the Third Reich: "Hitler wollte Fuehrer sein, hat doch keinen Fuehrerschein."
As with any such word play, it can't be translated verbatim. Suffice to say, it's a take off on the German
words "Fuehrer" (leader, guide) and "Fuehrerschein" (driver's license).

@Tacitus, I too am cautiously optimistic, however, let's hope and pray the AfD
gets its wings clipped, so to speak, by the even stronger forces of democracy.

While Germany surely struggles with her freedoms in the wake of WWII, as long
as men and women such Hoecke and Weidel are loose on the political scene,
reason and sanity are never safe!

Do ck.your e-mail from time to time.

Genealogy / The typical Polish look, or all Eastern Europeans [676]

Poles generally are tall, not necessarily wide or stocky, but
on average have several inches on, say, Southern Europeans,
such as Italians or Greeks.

Although eye color will vary, as will facial features, most Poles tend
toward light-eyed and generally sharp or sculptured features and
many will be full lipped, particularly women.

Hair is normally light brown or auburn, frequently blond, and coarse textured in any event.
I suppose a "stereotype" Polish male might well be the '60's actor Zygmunt Malanowicz
in "Noz w wodzie", as but one example:-)

@Tacitus, your remarks some days ago regarding Merz I found quite on point.
You seem not to be a die hard Merz supporter, while at the same time, no particular fan
either of the former Chancellor.

You never responded to my private mail, by the way.

Off-Topic / Is Islam a threat to western society? [167]

Although "Islam" means in Arabic "to submit", surely the
Catholic Church too taught submission to Christian dogma
on an equally draconian level, no?

@Rich, the richest single institution in history's the Catholic Church, so don't go on that anti-Jewish rant!
Had the Church not spread all those vile rumors about Jews, instead of the Romans, as Christ killers, we
wouldn't be having this pointless conversation.

History / Is there any part of Polish history that's at least a bit glorious? [239]

With a kind request to avoid national stereotypes, German history offers significant examples of
how her society developed in the manner in which it did leading up to the rise of Hitler.

"Ruling clique"?? History has often observed how Germany's "Mandarin" or intellectual class during the 19th century,
university academics in most cases, made every effort to distance themselves from the grit and smell of everyday
politics, leading to "not in my back yard" approach to maintaining a sharp distinction between statemanship and
intellectual involvment.
