History / Modern myths and legends about communist past in Poland [239]

Well..that would mean that a bourgeois elite had developed already right under the communists nose....

Recently I saw a movie about Leonid Brezhnev and his colleagues and in this movie Leonid Brezhnev tells such a joke:
Some older relative (possibly a parent) came to visit Leonid in his residence and walking through large premises sees all the luxurious furniture, carpets and Bohemian glass. Then tells troubled:

"Leonid, and what are you going to do when the Communists will come to power?.."

Before Gorbachev it wasn't easy to possess luxury things openly, especially an imported once. There were few luxury foreign cars in entire country. After Gorbachev the elites privatized the factories and stores and started to ride Mercedes and BMW, go for vocation on Cannes, etc. Much more open, easy lifestyle.

Gorbatschov was a historical stroke of luck, totally atypical for the system...

There are still disputes whether Gorbachev did something against the system. Some people claim he just legalized de jure something that already existed de facto. Such as luxuries, private property, inherited privileges, etc... Or fulfilled dream of elite majority about such legalization.

Do you think government payments can change that completely? How much government needs to pay for the second, the third, etc. child?.. Yes, if situation isn't going to change our nations, cultures, languages going to disappear irreversibly.

History / History of two Neighbors: Poland - Germany Interrelations [283]

I'm not sure fertility can be explained in measures of wealth only. Eastern Europe is poor but has low fertility rates. Rather we can tell that high fertility rates are more typical to agrarian and patriarchal civilizations or those who started to get industrial only recently. In industrial and postindustrial countries majority of people refused from having more than one child not for reason of been too rich, but for reason of been too poor. Rising children became much more expensive now than 100 - 70 years ago and problems with employment much bigger. People need to study too long. I wonder whether financial incentives can change that.

encouraging the higher iq native Europeans to have more kids like they do in Hungary and Poland.

Poland and Hungary have fertility rates well below self replacement level. But it is interesting whether low fertility rates among native Europeans could be corrected with help of financial incentives only. If yes, what would be a sufficient payment for the each second child? 300.000 Euros? Half-a-million???

History / Poland in a Slavic Union/Alliance/Federation? [335]

Woda, ziemia, szczęścia, światło, chwała, miężczyzna, kobieta, trzymać?

I would need translation for "kobieta" only, if I wouldn't know what does it mean already.

Yes, the downfall of an absolute monarchy in Russia was rather inevitable, but Bolsheviks in power and citizenship war in Russia is a different thing.

Is it really always bad idea? Do you think, for example, that representatives of different ethnic European cultures cannot live together and cooperate efficiently? For example Poles, Germans, Ukrainians, Italians, Greeks?

How large impact, do you think, the population loss that Poland and Ukraine experienced in 20-th century had on the development of this countries? First of all, I mean looses in WWI, Russian Citizenship War, Russian-Polish War of 1920, Holodomor in Ukraine, WWII and also numerous immigration out of these countries? Can we tell that both countries lost many of its best people?

As a pole I have a great respect towards countries like the Ukraine, even though we have fought them many times

The last time it happened more than 100 years ago, so you may get relaxed about that.

Mostly those technologies which are related to nuclear bomb. I'm not sure about "stolen" however, as some American scientists willingly transferred secrets to Soviets in hope to create global power military balance.

This prominent discovery has more relation to nuclear fission rather than nuclear power. In modern English word nuclear power is used for something perfectly controllable like nuclear power plants. If I no make mistake the first regularly operating nuclear power plant was built in Russia.

My grandmother is from Silesia. They had a huge house with garden and fields there.

If Germans feel they lack territory it could be fixed easily. Ukraine has larger territory than Germany, yet only 1/2 of German population. Propose unification to Ukrainians. Then buy property in Ukraine. But hurry to do it for a cheap price because after unification prices in Ukraine may skyrocket. (I hope this proposition will not be taken serious enough to regard it a threat to Ukraine national security).

Ha ha imagine if Sudan merges with Uganda!

I'm not sure this comparison is fair. In 1989 Ukraine would be in top 10 world countries by nominal GDP if counted as a separate country. Ukraine had developed agriculture, manufacturing and science.

Even now Ukraine serially produces such planes, for example.

I've heard somewhere that Putin paid out 1 billion of USD to Katyn victims relatives as compensation. Is it true or not?

I dont click stupid links.

The link was about Battle of Grunwald.

They even make fun about your country in our TV shows.

I'm not from Poland, but who knows. Possibly if Poles would find common language with Ukrainians somewhere in the past, it would be an international giant now...

Meanwhile Mercedes-Benz opens a new factory in Russia. 250 mln. Euro investment will create 1000 jobs. The factory will produce cars and vans for local market. I think there is an alternative for reparations - an economic cooperation. Germans will continue to build factories in Central Europe and Russia and everyone will be happy!

There seem to be the mistake in video, however. I think this is not the first Daimler factory in Russia.
