News / Coal-Powered Poland Refuses to "Go Green". EU Ain't Happy. [304]

I am guessing that educated and filled with facts posts make you uncomfortable,

Ah man don’t be so touchy.

Bio fuels are fuels made from any plant material, one of the biofuels called bio mass is made from woody stuff and is ideal for Poland to generate electricity. That crop you mentioned is used as is a lot of others. The impact on food prices has been negative for people mainly because of the subsidies paid see the US and Maze.

The problem with land rights in the developing world particularly Africa and SE Asia is huge as the institutionalised development agencies (World Bank for eg) are pressing for this strategy. It deprives people of their traditional land and ability to develop agriculture for local needs among other things.

Large scale monocultures are bad at almost all levels but the big developers love big projects.

I think there is enough poeple with agendas around the world

Care to explain this agenda that has griped the scientific community and who controls it?

You are arguing yourself round in ever decreasing circles by attempting to deny man made global warming.

The arguments are all well known the albedo effect, the interplay between atmosphere and oceans, tectonic events and astrological orientation all these have been delt with as part of a dynamic open system, you are just tinkering around the edges with shady talk of agendas and brainwashing. If you have a conspiracy to reveal lets hear it.

I argue with a simplistic reasoning that human Co2 emissions are responsible

The battle to demonstrate that the earth is warming was a long and difficult thing to do as I'm sure you know, the factors involved and their interdependencies are extremely complex.

The battle to demonstrate that it is caused by human activity has also triumphed it’s only a few who don’t accept the science. Discussing with them is like trying to get religious converts, almost pointless except that they are very well funded and fundamentally dishonest polluting the media with junk conclusions.

Edit

that CO2 has been greatly reduced from the atmosphere through natural processes is actually a common understanding among geologists

The Carbon cycle is taught to children.....nothing new there

There has been quite a conspiracy surrounding these "facts".

Care to demonstrate the conspiracy? I haven't heard of any such thing that mesmerises the scientific community as you suggest.

in medieval Europe there was a universal agreement between scientists that the Sun was revolving around the Earth

All agree that the earth is warming mainstream and cranks (that battle was lost), experimentation shows the warming theory to be reliable so the argument is if this warming is man made or not. Grasping at straws and tripping your self up with half truths is doing no good.

for eg, suggesting that the environment self regulates (Oceans sucking up CO2 spewed out by Volcanoes) in the way you hope is just wishful thinking. That neat idea though elegant is directly contradicted by the data so a conspiracy is the only way to explain the logical flaw.

UK, Ireland / There's not a lot wrong with Poles in the UK. There's just too many of them. [72]

There's not a lot wrong with Poles. There's just too many of them. Is there not exactly the correct amount of polish people at the moment?

Anyway, I would love to comment on your ideas except I've no idea what they are for example what does this mean

Since I never want to put my head above the parapet here in the UK, I will never exploit. I sometimes think I have it hard until I talk to the middle classes who own properties and land and I understand how they are truly exploited with nowhere to run.

Who in Britain uses Mall for a shopping centre?

remember that old adage...when in Rome etc.

Wave to the Pope?
Have water with Ice Cream?
Sleep with the fishes?
Did you know that rome backwards is emor.

At the time, I had two steady girlfriends who both slept with me simultaneously every weekend. I had no need to meet other women since I was the centre of attention from a pair of beautiful women.

Perhaps they turned the sound of the TV up to drown out the noises of an undoubted sex god?

History / Warsaw Rising 1944 - National Disaster or Triumph of Spirit ? [515]

Courage and a desire to be free are not tangible facts. It's not something that can be quantified, or measured anyway. It's something that can only felt and can only inspire.

It’s easy to interpret the rising as a disaster especially for those "hard empiricists", how you want to interpret it is something else all together. The rising is still seen as a beacon for freedom loving people. It's hard for others to understand what something like this means to a nation.

All changed, changed utterly:
A terrible beauty is born.

Then make a new thread, where all trolls could gather.

OK, yes post was off topic, just responding to a comment about Roth. For goodness sake don't be so touchy.

One of the current committee, an Elderly Swedish professor (I forget his name) intensely and openly dislikes American novels which is why Phillip Roth hasn't got one. There's also the rush to give the prize to people when they're still alive and when the choice is between an 80 year old and a 90 year old, the 90 year old gets it.

I agree with the thrust of what you say but Roth is crap.

Incidentally in the English speaking world American fiction is far superior to any thing else and has been for some time.

History / Polish inventors - what have they ever given to the world? [101]

isn't Arabs who invented distillation? like around 10th century?

The first mention of distillation references Mary the Jewess,
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_the_Jewess

She is credited as the person who discovered the process.

News / Poland fines singer for bashing Bible [159]

The Founding Fathers had it right. 1st Amendment, Freedom of Speech. That's a democracy.

Did the founding fathers not outlaw murdering your own citizens that too would make you a democracy yet it happens.
Freedom of speech is not the freedom to say "Yer Ma's yer Da an yer Da's yer Ma" (The worst insult when I was a kid). There is more to a democracy than rigid rules. (OK Amendments are how you bend the rules)

I do understand that you are saying that no limits should be placed upon expression, that false outrage fills column inches and that is an inconvenience, the downside of free speech.

There are limits to free speech in every country even The US for eg you cannot call for the murder of someone especially a rich man, you cannot "glorify terrorism" whatever the hell that is; Other democracies have the right to form themselves how they want they dont have to use the US model which was designed to prevent change.

So you have a pinhead drumming up publicity this is how you do it in a democracy when you have no talent.

Freedom of speech does not give you the right to steal or create websites that are breaking copyright laws.

But sopa is more than that it prevents you telling someone where to find such sites.

aaaah, OK. so laws should be written based on a popularity contest. you're hilarious.

All Laws in a democracy are based on a popularity contest.

I think what you are not getting is that commonsense has to be applied, that’s why the discretion of a judge and the separation of the legislature are important.

Freedom of speech is not just freedom to accidentally offended, intent has to be considered. As someone said the other day the US founding fathers were spot on in designing the constitution what they couldn’t foresee was the retards that would end up in congress. Take that a step outside the floor and you have all sorts of nutjobs saying anything they like, not to advance a noble cause but to stick it to the man as they see it.

We all restrict our freedom of speech/thought on an everyday basis its called social grace.

Alcohol was not used as a disinfectant or purifier.

The shellfish thing, I remember that lemon juice was initially used to see if the oyster for eg was alive thus safe to eat.

News / Polish prosecutor 'shoots self after news conference' [93]

This is being reported today

The shooting exposed a long-simmering conflict between the country's civilian prosecutor general, Andrzej Seremet, and Poland's chief military prosecutor, General Krzysztof Parulski. Seremet plans to bring military prosecutors under civilian authority, but has not publicly explained his reasoning

He said:

PAP quoted Przybyl as saying he objects to the planned reforms and that he tried to commit suicide "in defence of the honour" of military prosecutors. "I wanted the [military] prosecutor's office to continue as it is, and under the leadership of General Parulski," he said. Przybyl said under Parulski all investigations would be carried out "honestly" and under no pressure.

I only said the weapon was available, i did not say that any guy on the street could use it.

Yes of course.

Everyone knows that there is a degree of criminal in the armed forces, look at the amount of stuff that the USA army lose's.

Not just loosing stuff the corruption in arms sales is worldwide look at Britain and Tony Blair stepping in to stop a major investigation into corruption with BAE systems. It seems that any dealings with arms companies, which by their nature must be secretive, are prone to corrupt practices.

Edit

what I mean is that he just wanted to make a show and not really kill himself...

Strange thing to do, why do you think he would do that?

News / Polish prosecutor 'shoots self after news conference' [93]

Obviously the shooting wasn’t faked, the question is why did he do it. He said that the civil authorities were going to take over the investigations that had been carried out by the military. If there was/is corruption the civil authorities would be better placed to investigate, that would be normal. Questions about any illegal methods used in the Smolensk investigation would quite rightly be part of any outside review.

News / Polish prosecutor 'shoots self after news conference' [93]

Col Mikolaj Przybyl was defending a military investigation into media leaks related to the air crash that killed the Polish president in 2010.

He asked reporters to leave so that he could take "a break".

Upon hearing a loud thud, the reporters returned to find him on the floor with a pool of blood around his head.

History / POLAND: EASTERN or CENTRAL European country? [1080]

Historically it was extremely difficult and expensive to map land accurately particularly in the North European Plain, the steppes and the North American plaines.

I made a joke the other day but it is hard to see Poland as eastern. There is something about the oriental idea but I dont think it is relevant to modern Poland.
