History / How much Poles trust to France? [93]

THE only people modern British school kids learn about are Nelson Mandela and Anne Frank

mmmm, sounds about right,by the time i got to high school the curriculem also gave the impression that britain went to war to rescue the jews....but only after us having been nasty imperialist murderers for the previous 200 years.....

But ,no,we did have a good primary education back then and some brilliant teachers. One even kept us abreast of the latest changes in the Kremlin(early 80s so quite a regular update :))

Im not claiming every kid knows she was Polish or French or japanese ,but they know who she was and what she did, petty nationalistic jingoisim can be drilled into them at a later stage.....

"I really wasn't used to the hook yet."

killer.....

My niece attends a rather hippy-ish private primary school here in California and it bans pirate costumes from its Halloween celebrations because pirates still exist, especially in South-East Asian waters, and they are brutal murderers.

Oh,thats priceless,I thought my mum was at bonkers hippy level mark 9 ( I wasnt allowed toy soldiers or army guns, but, could have toy knights and cowboys and indians and cowboy guns.....) but,wow....reminds me of a lecture me and a couple of mates got about the horrors of napalm after being caught playing a rowdy game of Zulus and Red Coats aged 9 by one of our more lfty teachers.......pointing out that they didnt have napalm in 1878 didnt do me any favours, but pointed out to the know it all git I try not to be to this day :)

Alice_8

Bless, I'll take it something got lost in the translation, who ever you are.....

I do not understand why you are using french, mind a language!

francais j'adore...sorry,what "French" did I use in my post? Pardone moi,did you want me to make up a name that was never used like czopin or somesuch? Or was it calling Marie Curie, Marie Curie that you think is "French"?

Maria SKLODOWSKA - Curie

No one outside of Poland calls her this name,as far as I know she never called herself it either. Keep your knickers on love, she was Polish,no one is denying it,but as Johnny pointed out no one in the west uses the name sklod...skred..slodo...skra...wotsits anyway,so,relax.

first woman in the world to get the Noble price and actually in two disciplines - physics and chemistry

Good for her, and FYI,every school child over about 6 or 7 knows this in the UK......

do not name her surname 'wotshit' this is really abusive

and maybe if I had it might have been abusive, but, being as you are pulling that old Polish stereotype of making up sh!t to get upset about.....

marie wotsits currie

"Wotsits",like ,"thingamyjig" or "Who's er face" or" whojacallher"....nonsense words to denote the writters lack of knowladge, and usually the readers too, regarding the actual ,correct name.....or used when a name is "unpronouncable".....

2nd thing is that despite all things which were in the past

2nd thing is I dont think your English is good enough to detect irony or sarcasam,as,if you actually read what I wrote, instead of reading what you "THINK" I wrote you would see I was pointing out how close historically France and Poland have been.............

bless...........................

History / Polish pirates [58]

No read post #8

I dont need to,what I was refering to was his "source" for "baltic pirates" as being some book writtten by some german fellow, and he himself admitted there was no historical basis for it,but,he choose to believe it anyway..........

We can hardly exclude Polish pirates in the famous Klaus Störtebeker's Victual Brothers (German: Vitalienbrüder) but with no historical proofs as far I know.

...................................................................... .......................

Why are pirates called pirates anyway?

(They just aaaarrrre)

This took me back to primary school, and the assemblies when for some bizzare reason teachers thought it was appropriate for 6 year olds to sing "15 men on a dead mans chest" and "What do you do with a Drunken sailor?".........

I see nobody having at least a ppm content of elementary knowledge bothers to leave a comment on "Polish pirates" so I have to do it.

Aha,I see you've been reading "how to win friends and influence people".......

so I have to do it.

Please, dont feel put upon,by all means dont bother your royal highness.....

We can hardly exclude Polish pirates

no historical proofs

well ,er,I guess we can exclude them.....

Jagiellonian and Vasa kings used privateers fighting........

Thank you for that answer, now, why didnt you just say that to begin with oh font of all saltyseadog knowladge ;)

History / Polish pirates [58]

oops Barney,He's Hungarian :)
And here we have the forefathers of Blackwater,haliburton et al;
Letters of Marque
The practice of privateering was established, and had definite rules, during the 18th century. British, French, and American privateers had to follow procedure. Captains and ship owners would take a prize and sell the vessel and cargo captured, following an established protocol in Liverpool (England), Dunkirk (France) or Boston (America). Whenever war was declared, a General Prize Act was made to allow privateering,

Applications for these "letters of marque" were made by the captain of the privatering ship or by the captain and his joint ship owners. In Great Britain these letters were delivered to the Admiralty, while in the Americas these were given to the state governors. The Continental Congress of the Americas issued privateering commissions from April 1776 until July 1780. Without a government's sanctions, privateers could be hung as pirates. These letters would name the ship's owner, their town of origin, the name of the captain and senior officers, the ship's name, the weight of the ship, the size of the crew, and its armaments. These letters also stated the country that they were allowed to attack and plunder. Infractions of these orders made them pirates.

Ship owners were required to post a bond with the government to guarantee their good behavior. In 1812, this cost $5.000 - $10,000 (U.S.) or $1,500-$3,000 (in British pounds). If a captain, or any member of his crew, was not in accordance with these rules, he lost his deposit. Therefore, the captain could set uncooperative men in any location and leave them there, upon his own best judgment, to avoid losing this money. (Privateers and Pirates).

History / Polish pirates [58]

Probably there were on french side too.

There were entire Polish regiments on Boneys side Southern, Duchy of Warsw troops for a start. But yes,no doubt some polish seamen on board the LOSING sides fleet ;)...There were frenchmen on "our"side, britons on "there" side.....nationalism really wasnt the big deal it is these days ....:)

and they don't seem to have a tradition of colonies and slaves.

lols...Serfs are slave with a different name mate....and as for colonies,do a search on this site for Polish/Liberia :)
Part of the reason Poland didnt join in with europes empire grabbing activities was simply put,she didnt exist as a free nation at the time, nothing to do with any "better nature" Im afraid.

Southern don't you mean Privateers? The "legalised" Pirates...

There may have been Poles among them, but my own feeling is that if any had been from Poland, the numbers would have been small.

There were Poles in Nelsons fleet at trafalgar....they always have found themselves everywhere, sort of eastern europes Irish :)

Re the baltic, the hanseatic league had that place pretty sowed up for a fair chunk of history.

Did Polish rulers ever authorise Privateers in the way Spain ,Britain France the US etc did?

UK, Ireland / Does everyone know about countess Markiewicz? Polish connection. [16]

yep,the whole Catholic Protestant divide is a fairly new phase of nationalism, I keep meaning to read up on the 1790s United Irishmen(?) group and attempted uprising, but,TBH Irish, like Scots history tends to depress me as I cant fully shake off the blood tied emotions....and get to wound up for someone happily living in England :)

Life / Weird names Polish parents give to their kids [43]

My grandfather offered my dad 1,000 dollars to name me Hipolite after my great grandfather. My dad said "no way in hell".

For that money i'll name my first son Hipolite in honour of your great grandfather...:)

Read this.

have they got their kids back yet?
its sinister that people name their kids after famous nazis but its also sinister that without investigation beyond shock at the names those kids can be removed by the local authorities and put in care....maybe its the best place for them, maybe their parents just need a bit of "guidence" ....oh,and a quick look in the mirror,if they are the master race Im a 6.7 kenyan.......

How can you link raising the VAT for babyware by Tusk with Kaczynski pardoning a crook
is beyond me.

How you can make the link between a rise in the cost of baby clothes(learn to fekkin knit...) to Hans Frank, and neither i imagine could any other sane person.....thats just either dumb as fek or sick as fek.

Life / What gifts to take? Presents customs in Poland. [167]

right,marynka...your talking about Polands commie inspired "womens day"....those of us not dragged up under the reds think of,ironically, "International Womens day"....which as has been pointed out was never a "holiday" or a reason to give flowers but a day to highlight the plight of women in religious and culturally repressed sociaties......

enlighten me so

Ok,so maybe I spoke too soon :)...Its got fek all to do with buying flowers here.....maybe in Poland its been turned into a commercial venture...TBH the only publicity Ive seen for it here in Yorkshire is little flyers for Dzien Kobietta (sp) all flowery and st valentinesy.......so looks like a worthy cause has been turned into naff comercialism in Poland before the UK ....:)

Life / Vasectomy in Poland is illegal? Why? [123]

Just have. Ok, it's not illegal but still you must "have children".

This reeks of nanny type moral superiority and condescension to me and, yes, has the smell of the church about it

Only thing it reeks of to me is lawyers circling like sharks round a whaling ship.....
Its not illegal, thats been clarified, the law is there to prevent unwanted operations being carried out on vulnerable people, correct? So,the only reason those restrections will be in place is to cover Doctors backs from law suits a few years down the line when the kid grows up a bit and realises that the woman of his dreams wants his children or she is walking......

Bit pathetic comparing a modern man or woman making an informed choice regarding the course they want their life to take and Nazi enforced sterelisation programs. In fact its damned insulting all round,to those women in striped dresses being forced in front of X ray machines and to the womam or man today who decides for whatever reason that they dont want any/more children, damned insulting. Sorry, but this really is a case of just who on gods earth do you think you are?

And damned hypocritical too,on the one hand you are happy to trot out the same vile stereotypes of one set of the nazis victims and on the other you seek moral highground condeming informed voluntry sterelisation as a "nazi" idea.....yuck.

Life / What is Poland's view on obesity? How healthy, fit are Poles? [166]

From my visits to Poland Id say there is the usual "middle aged spread" in some people but other than that I dont recall noticing any obesity issues amongst the under 40s. Certainly the immpresion I got was that Poles ,as a wide sweeping generalisation, are less likely to be obese than us Britons, and we are generally less obese than people in the US so...I dont know about any specific nastyness about it,other than that I suppose you can hear anywhere in the world from some judgmental people.

Oh yeah, lots of walking,Poles still dont live all day in their cars or their lounge chairs, though tbh formal gym membership is probably low,and probably lower than the stats. I know my mates who join a gym in January go for a couple of weeks every 2 days, then after a month or so dont go again, still officially members of the gym though....
