What should Poland do with the problem of Belarus? [1800]
the conflicts between Belarus and Poland?
In 2020 there was a Belarusian presidential election. Lukashenka claimed about 80% of the vote after excluding almost all rivals from running against him. No one believes this number. The thing is, he might have actually won. His support (as far as can be determined) was around 40%. Belarus has a first past the post system so he didn't need 50% + 1 to win (as in Poland) just more than any other candidate. Again, he might have actually gotten that. We'll never know.
For whatever reason he wanted 80% which was clearly fiction and this upset a large enough percentage of the population that protests began. Originally among the younger and better education but also among traditional parts of the electorate he could can on support from. He declared that protesting against him was a crime.
Poland supported the protestors (and had previously given dissidents against him international protection).
Eventually Lukashenka was able to shore up support from the military and police who turned against the civilians and lots of well educated young people (of the type that any sane country wants and needs) have been imprisoned. Lots have also fled to Poland.
Also, Poland granted asylum to an olympic athlete who didn't want to return to Belarus (she had said things that could be seen as critical of Lukashenka's government which is a de facto crime in modern Belarus).
The roots basically go back to the 1990s when Belarus elected Lukashenka who rather than pursue democracy and development turned back the clock to recreate a Soviet style government complete with a return to the Soviet era Byelorussian flag and has all but banned the Belarusian language in favor of Russian. Poland has funded media in Belarusian (sensing that strengthening the Ukrainian and Belarusian languages weakens Moscow's soft power in the region - results have not been encouraging.
