Food / Polish mustards [134]

American mustard is bright yellow

We have something siimilar in the U.K. called Hot Dog Mustard which you only found on hot dog stands or at fairgrounds. I always liked it and it tastes nostalgic now.

My favorite is Dijon

Very useful as an emulsifier in cooking. Then again, so is mustard powder.

this description fits German mustards better

I used to have a friend who was a German teacher and liked all things German. She used to buy something called 'Susser senf' (excuses for the spelling; it sounded like that when she said it) which I tried. It was supposed to be mustard yet tasted of nothing.

Roleski

They do a decent Ukraińska (dawno Rosyjska) however the rest just don't appeal, especially Sarepska (though a bit of that works nicely in a cheese sauce and even works if you're making Glamorgan sausages). In small supermarkets, it's almost invariably Kamis that's on sale.

Oddly enough, there's a company in Silesia that makes English mustard for export. Sadly only ready made in jars which I don't like buying because it loses heat/flavour and goes off quickly.

suburban sprawl like you have

You really haven't been to Europe, have you? Do you really think that the alternative here to emptiness is "suburban sprawl".

Sounds like Central Park in New York

I quite like Central Park, especially the cityscape around it however nothing like that. More like Scarsdale or parts of the Hamptons if you're looking for an NY analogy. Not really my thing and mostly 1930s buildings with relatively little infrastructure, but handy, safe and quiet.

I wouldn't call Warsaw and Lublin off the beaten track

Nor would I. Perhaps she's writing for people who think that European tourism is only London, Paris, Venice and Vienna.

Did you see the apology at the bottom of the article?

Actually they weren't

They were.

She went to Warsaw and Lublin. Odd that you should pretend that either of them are "off the beaten track".

Europe may be composed of many different countries but it is bigger than the USA.

And we shouldn't forget that most of the 640 miles that Jailbird Jim drives through is empty.

News / Ups and downs of the democratic government 2023-2027 in Poland [363]

Fragile

Means fragile. A problem for minority governments the world over.

One drawback of coalition governments. There should be a way to force it through as a precursor to equal marriage.

you don`t know the intricacies of Polish politics.

I do, not that politics in PL is especially 'intricate'.

Odd that you keep mentioning nationality.

Food / Polish mustards [134]

No, it isn`t

Look at the label on the jars of certain brands. Some say Ukraińska, some say Ostra (not that it's especially ostra). Things change.

Poles

At least one hasn't seen that some manufacturer have rebranded due to current circumstances.

British

Evidently some of us know things happening in Poland that you don't. That one's actually the only decent mustard on the market unless you go to Kuchnie Świata or occasionally Dealz to get Colman's. And even then, they've only got ready made rather than tins of powder.

Hard to know why Polish mustard in general is so bland and flavourless. Almost always ready made in jars too. Near useless for cooking with.Almost as bad as that stuff that Americans pretend is mustard.

Horseradish

One good thing in PL is how common horseradish root is in the shops. It's always better to make it from scratch.

Alone. I am drinking it straight from the bottle, one gulp after another

Eww.

I find Polish mustard very bland like German mustard.

The one that used to be called Rosyjska and is now called Ukraińska is a decent medium one but still lacks kick.

News / Presidential elections 2025 - the race has commenced!!! [665]

If you are talking about me

Only if your name's Poloniusz.

Socialism is communism without a bloody revolution

It isn't.

And just as capitalism is restrained, constricted and controlled in the developed world where there is also a large non-capitalistic element to the economies, so Socialism co-exists with limited capitalism.

The problem is, if you give capitalists an inch, they'll take a mile, as we saw with privatised (soon to be back) rail franchises in the U.K, and situations in Poland where companies (mostly though not entirely German) were allowed to buy publicly owned manufacturing assets so they could close them down and switch production to their home market. And when they don't close them down, they take more in 'profit' from someone's work than they get themselves for doing it!

Looks like he's fallen down the rabbit hole.

And the sad thing is that he can't even vote in a Polish election, not that he could even read the campaign manifesto if he tried.

Bizarre that some pond life try to pretend that the concept of 15 minute cities could somehow restrict their freedom.

step by step of the revolution playbook

That capitalists use to make you their slave?

No, I lived in standard Polish town. That's how things were organised

It's like that pretty well everywhere, except for cases where economies of scale and poor funding have lessened that.

Combined

There's nothing 'combined ' with anything. Why are good town planning principles a problem for you?

NY has everything within 15 minutes in any direction

So in fact not a problem for you.Yet for some reason you erroneously mention it.

left wing

socialist

Better a Socialist 'agenda' than an unrestricted capitalistic agenda.

Both main contenders mentioned here are centre right though, and sadly not on the left so basically you're still saying nothing.

15 minute cities

An excellent concept, don't you think? That and good public transport and safe streets for kids.

freak out at that idea

Most of the developed world is like that and always has been. Unfortunately there are some crazies in the UK who believe internet lies that they're going to be somehow confined to their street.

it's only suburb-crazed Americans

Ironically, the planned towns and cities built in the Gulf (the expansion of Kuwait City, Jubail, Dammam, Jizan, etc) by American companies (mostly Bechtel) have always been not 15 minute cities, but 10 minute cities. It's just good town planning.

Off-Topic / Random movies (not Polish) proposed by forum users [95]

I can't imagine what the people who approved this were thinking

+1

Fiction and Death Camps don't sit well together. Schindler's list only works since it's based on the life of a real person and handles the Auschwitz scenes carefully.

There are enough lowlifes who try to relativise or even deny the reality of what went on. Romantic TV series somehow add to that.

The election is one year from now.

There is already voters' regret with Tusk

So plenty of time.

You are in quite

That's certainly an interesting word salad. Why not come to Poland? Despite the language barrier, you could get laid in one of those dodgy kiosks with the curtained-off back bit where they offer 'dances'. There are still a few around town and they'll let anyone in who pays and doesn't mind scar tissue and greenish discharge.

Pawian

Has absolutely no idea either, since we've never met.

You are from Leeds after all.

Actually no, but never mind accuracy.

We're talking about Poland's next President, something nothing whatsoever to do with you, and which you evidently know as little about as the zero you know about anyone's language skills here. And since you can't even hold a conversation in Polish, language skills are something, like slimness or girlfriends, that you have never been blessed with.

Two driven candidates, both centre right, no credible challenger on either side of them, and only one thing sure; that the winner will be from the same party as the government; a good thing right now.

That's because Poles outside of Warsaw can't relate to him.

Given that he only missed being elected by a tiny margin, I'd say that millions outside Warsaw related to him.

Dunning-Kruger

Given that you don't speak Polish at all and have never heard me speak in any language, it seems that the Dunnung-Kruger thing relates more to your assessment of the language skills of people you've never met.

Yes! Regularly!

No. It's fine for a politician to give interviews in their own language, and should they decide to give one in another language, quirks are fine. It's not a test of language administered by non-natives.

While the production is not so fluent.

Yes, it's fluent. It flows beautifully.

live interviews

Is there a need to give a live interview in a foreign language?

Most politicians don't, and when they do, nobody expects perfection. And Radel Sikorski in any case speaks English very well, as we established here. His rival just sounds like a second language learner with a textbook and a teacher called Agnieszka who starts every lesson with "hello, I am Agnes" and can't pronounce law or girl.

he speaks English less fluently

That's fine by me since I'm fluent in Polish.

And should any politician need to speak or issue a statement in English, it would always need to be proofread by an educated native speaker anyway. He could ask his wife who is very good with words.

The othe4 three can take a running jump.
