Work / 9000 gross salary in Warsaw? [18]

what about when you want to leave the city?

Get a train.

Or do a big shop?

Order it or get an Uber. Or get some exercise by walking.

We almost never use ours and I'd be happier without it. Especially since the public transport is excellent, driving standards in PL are extremely poor and because parking can be a hassle.

Work / 9000 gross salary in Warsaw? [18]

in Warsaw

In the Powiaty which include a lot of villages and smaller towns.

In the city nobody needs one unless they live in an out of the way suburb, far from metro, rail or tram.

Off-Topic / Nobel Prize and Oscars = Propaganda? [61]

@Ron2
Are you suggesting that healthcare was free there before President Obama? Or that there isn't a significant section of the population there who favour the same sort of universal healthcare that developed countries have.

a Nobel price for "her fight against the oppression of women in Iran."

Are you suggesting that the oppression of women in Iran is a frivolous thing? She sounds a pretty strong person of she's a public figure fighting that.

the US that has a crucial vote on who gets the price

That's simply untrue and hard to know why you made it up.

The Nobel Peace Prize is Norwegian and nothing to do with America. None of the Nobel Committee that deal with that prize are from outside Scandinavia.

USA, Canada / Why indian origin woman as Miss America and never Polish origin? [40]

socialism

Communism. It's best not to mix up two different things.

the Oscars and the Nobel Prize that prove that these rewards are 100% politicised / fake

The first are prestigious and the second are highly prestigious.

It's good that "beauty contests" are dying out though.

News / European News and Poland Thread - part 4 [1091]

poor

What you actually mean is that the Conservative Party wasted all the tax revenue by giving crazy tax breaks to their supporters in the Home Countoes and spent nothing on infrastructure.

Economically, the country's in a far better place than France and Germany and the currency is strong.

Food / What's more popular in Poland beer or vodka? [59]

political islam

Qutbism and Deoband? No. A bit but not entirely. It isn't a modern word; in fact it's very general and means any sort of soft covering.

The discussions about modest clothing have been around since the days of the Prophet. Cultural conservatives from Pakistan etc can say and do what they like. A certain amount of basic modesty (not that much) is recommended for both men and women however the Hadithi vary and leave a lot to choice. Unfortunately inadequate and reactionary men across the world are always paranoid that someone better will steal 'their' women.

but again... some carry it to ridiculously weird lengths

Unfortunately, people in societies where alcohol is uncommon (regardless of that society's religion) aren't used to holding their booze and often behave like teenagers in an Amsterdam coffee shop, going for the strongest stuff they can find which they can't handle.

and hijab is also for males? never

Hijab just means a soft cover. It can be a chair cover or over a milk jug or a tarpaulin the back of a lorry.

About Muslims and alcohol, it really does depend on who you listen to. Many drink (all the Quran says about alcohol (and drugs) is that you shouldn't pray while intoxicated) and although alcohol is often seen as slightly less respectable than hashish, plenty of people in the Arab world do like a drink.

according to you?

According to me?????

Looks like you forgot about adultery, theft, bearing false witness and a few other things that are haram like not attending Mass on ob days.

Did you think that the word "haram" only relates to food items? Perhaps you also think that the word "hijab" is only about female outerwear.

Work / 9000 gross salary in Warsaw? [18]

4000zl net which I'm not sure is enough to live off

It's about the median wage in Warsaw in total, out of which people pay for accommodation, bills etc. After expenses, you won't be rich but you won't be poor either.

Not sure if you have a car, but you may not need it to save on the costs.

In Warsaw, nobody needs one since the public transport is excellent. I agree with you, the OP should go for it.

Feedback / Who deserves to inherit Polish Forums? [344]

I'm not sure if it's a problem with the forum or with my phone or what... 🤔 Has anyone else experienced it?

Yes, though only recently and not only here.

I use an apple phone and it's the same. I suspect it's to do with mobile phone software not really having much to do nowadays with the type of software forums use.

Feedback / Who deserves to inherit Polish Forums? [344]

I don't know how many people use mobile, but I would hazard a guess that it may be the majority.

Among regular posters (most of whom are far from Generation Z or even Milennials) I'd guess no.

Some posters tend to make short posts (Lenka, Amiga500, etc) which suggests a phone however most probably don't.

alcohol is haram

Not necessarily. It depends on your own interpretation and which "fiqh" you follow.

And of course there are many things that are haram for Polish Catholics however millions of them still do those things.

Law / Gun control in Poland: should Polish people be allowed to own guns? [1070]

Another massacre in American school

Another? Then again, they're so common that they're no longer a big news item outside the country they happen in.

There seems to be a section of American society who can't quite believe that people in other countries pity them and are glad that we don't have their guns or their lack of a health service.

Life / A Muslim Arab in Poland who loves Polish KABANOS & VODKA [20]

@Alien
Kabanos (provided that it's the real thing and not that horrible 'drobiowy' or the 'plant based' one) is delicious but karkówka is never good.

It would suit Arab tastes though, basically meat for the sake of it.

VW on the brink of bankruptcy again.

At least they can't get away with closing factories they have abroad in order not to close them at home.

As various commentators have been pointing out recently, Germany is an analogue country in a digital world.

Classifieds / introduce my job products from china [27]

the far right in Britain comrade.

There are very few of them and most are semi-literate with an IQ of 90, type 2 diabetes and a BMI of 40+ so we don't need to.

Existing laws suffice and there's several political parties to choose from with a thriving opposition and regular changes of ruling party at elections so people of all political persuasions have something to choose from.

Classifieds / introduce my job products from china [27]

far worse than anything that was done by Ukraine to RuSSian speakers before 2014:

I'd say that nothing bad was done to r*SSian speaking Ukrainians, most of whom are in fact either Surzhyk speakers or speakers of Odesa dialect anyway.

copyright issues

They can't make fakes as easily. That's a problem for them since fake products are extremely common in China.

Another problem with buying stuff from China is that you have zero comeback if there's a problem with the quality of the product. Sometimes they even send different products.

And of course it's doing workers in Poland or elsewhere in Europe out of their jobs.

Travel / What can Poland do to attract more tourists? Llamas farm? [71]

Swedes and Anglos using Poland as some cheap replacement for Amsterdam - t

More likely to be people from further east. And wait until the Chinese discover it.

Just ask Nepal, or Iceland.

And the UK too. I was in London recently and found the over-tourism depressing. York, near my home, suffers from over-tourism and there are awful stories about Edinburgh and Canterury.

Krakow already has a serious problem with over-tourism. The last couple of times I was there for meetings, it wasn't pleasant to see.

A little surprising that Germans are not in top 5.

I'd guess it's more that they have a lot of wine in the south and west, some of it very good.

It's always worth being wary about alcohol consumption stats.

Centrum

I'd have used that word or Ośrodek which sounds nicer.

Probably the latter since (sometimes) foreigners speaking a language often instinctively try to avoid using words in that language that are similar to their own for fear of overuse.

We aren't talking about Polish. Poles have their own language, named after them. Just as we have our own language, named after us.

Off-Topic / Is this English phrase correct? [22]

was used by Shakespeare

It is not, however, used in Standard English.

And since Polish has a word (even several) that suffice, it is pointless to borrow a word from a non-standard form of English.
