and the like won't bring back Hitler's victims!

Nothing ever brings victims back. Bombing and prisons were invented to lower the probability that the perpetrator would do it again.
The best way to make that probability equal to zero is by killing the perpetrator.

Tell that to those widows and or family members...STRAIGHT TO THEIR SEETHING FACES!! Then watch as they beat you black and blue.

Only those without logical response resort to violence. Poloniusz already made this point but the message didn't sink in.
Find one thing in my post above yours that is not logically or factually correct.

Quit rationalízing! By the end of '45, even the winners were losers if their sons or daughters tragically perished in the eternal pursuit of justice. Sacrifice too has its human limits! In the oft quoted words of four-star general and hero Omar Bradley, "We won a war and lost a peace, we know more about death than we do about killing than we do about living. This is the 2Oth century's claim to progress and distinction."

You didn't understand the post or you would have responded appropriately:-)

The quote was .."we know more about death than we know about life, more about killing than we do about living..."

So what? What's the conclusion from that statement as it would apply to the US and the USSR armies killing Germans?

You're rationalizing mass killing to justify the means.

No, I am asking. Did you notice the question marks or should I use bold to highlight them?

I did indeed

And you decided to ignore my question?

The question is meant to provoke, not inform and is therefore worthless.

Questions are meant to ask, not inform. Mine were meant to give an opportunity to put some specifics on your meaningless, lofty proclamations.
Talking about the meaning of life is cute if you are a professor holding a glass of wine. When you are in charge of conducting and winning a war, talking meaningless bs the way you do it, is hard to justify. So I am not surprised that you have nothing to say when asked how that high moral ground of yours would translate into specific orders given to the US pilots. My guess is that they would tell you to shut up and get out of the way. You would get the same from the Israelis in 1967 and 1973.

What separates humans from the four-legged variety of animal is their practiced ability to control language. Those high-minded verities (basic truths) you sneer at are the only things worth defending:-) If not, then might as well move into the local zoo and rent space next to a tiger, hippo or giraffe!

So what exactly would you say to a pilot as he is revving up to go to Dresden?

The same stuff I'd say were the issue of gun control to come up: USE BOTH HANDS! After that, have a good stiff drink and pray real hard for the Lord to forgive you.

To which he would say: Get the f**k out of my way before I run you over, a-hole!

To which I would reply as the late, great Regis Philbin: Is that your final answer?

You? Near a bomber? You do know those had machine guns and bombs and that both could kill - enemy and innocents alike. How awful! The US and the Brits should have dropped roses and boxes of chocolates, instead. Bad guys...

I was being facetious.
