Why are some Polish people dark complected, and others very light

You are more likely to get a sun burn on a hot summer day than a cloudy winter day for a reason.

This is because the axis of the earth is tilted relative to the sun and thus the sun's rays are less diffuse in the Summer.

True. Less Solar Activity can cause an ice age like what happened during the Maunder Minimum (Little Ice Age)]

Or the Milankovitch Cycles where Variations in the Earth's tilt that happen over time cause Ice ages & Warm cycles (We are in the Warm cycle now)

An Ice age tend to happen for a reason because less sun light is hitting the earth. thus, it cools.

With clouds they do block out some UV rays.

This is part of the reason why the British Isles tend to have rather cool summers compared to other parts of Europe.

Its just mixing with Russians, and other slavic neighbors who have darker hair... thats all it is. Its not because of mongols raping poles, or russian soldiers raping polish women... this is all bullshit speculation by mentally immature people. I'm 100% polish and proud, I have blue eyes, brown and some blond head hair, - black, dark red, brown, and blond beard, brown arm hair, and black chest and back hair. My hair is very dense and unlike the stereotypical blond hair of poles. I am also very tall 6'3" which is not typically of Poles, which are slightly shorter. There is generations of mixing going, and also there is divine intervention.

I agree with Polski Moc about the maunder minimum... look at a graph of solar cycles the last 200 years, and you'll see the sun has been more activity and if you look at colder decades (20's,30's, 70's, and now lat 2000's) all had low sunspots. Also during the "dalton minimum" in the early 1800's was the "YEAR WITHOUT A SUMMER" in which several WEEKS of freezing daytime temperatures were observered in modern day new york city and new england. The Thames river in Londom froze over. The baltic sea was so frozen over that Poles and Scandanavians would build houses on it and build roads on it for trade. Also the new york harbor froze over letting people walk from manhattan to staten island and new jersey. Now the Dalton minimu also had same amount of spots as our current cycle of solar cycle 24. In fact our sun has not had a spot for 5 years until last august one spot showed up then quickly disappeared and until early this year they started showing up.

The evidence is all around us... just look

1) New York City shatters all time snowfall record in central park of almost 100" in one year... which is as much as alps or rockies or himalays

2) worst flooding of missippi river EVER

3) Snow observed in early May in Wroclaw and Opole which are traditionally warmest areas of Poland

4) Return of Arctic sea ice in areas haven't seen ice in decades

5) Polish Baltic sea has been freezing over more and more each year since 2008.. this year people were observed cross country skiing 2 km out from the coast of gdynia

I would be preparing for a coming small ice age, and not global warming.... one question we have to ask ourselves is that our society has made such preparations for warming of earth... what happesn if the earth falls into an ice age for 5 or 10 or 20 years... will the nations of the civlized world be able to keep mass panic and looting from developing.

Imho, (ethnic) Russians have a lot of blondes. It's hard to compare (does anyone have any reliable data?), but I would say about the same percentage of the population is blonde. For example, here are some pictures of ordinary Russians: olya-ivanova.livejournal.com/463895.html - if you ignore the poverty (it's a poor rural area) and the general mess, they look exactly like Poles.

Does it explain why our Girls look alot better than Western European girls????

It depends on one's taste. I guess, it's different from guy to guy.

Interesting map... I cant believe Eastern England and Scotland have more percentage of blonde hair then Poles though -_-

On my dads side everyone has dark hair and on my moms side blonde.
Funny enough I have dirty blonde hair though.

Your right, there are a lot of Russian that are blond and look like Poles... there is also a sizeable amount that have darker skin and darker hair. I wasn't singling out Russia... i'm just saying that Poles have mixed with lots of slavic country LIKE Russia who have higher percentages of darker hair then pure Poles.

Great information wiedzmin, thanks for posting.

This blonde haired map is more accurate.

upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/b/b3/Map_pigmentat ion_in_Europe.png/783px-Map_pigmentation_in_Europe.png

It was created by one of the most respected Anthropologists Carleton Coon.

This map shows Southern Italy as darker than Northern Italy. Unlike that other map that you saw before that shows South Eastern Italy as the lightest part of Italy which is laughable.

That is light hair. Which includes Red hair. British Isles have up to 13 percent Red hair. While Poland is very low. I am not sure but probably not much more than 1 - 2 percent

Over 50 percent of people in some parts of the British Isles have Red hair genes. Thing is Blonde hair is more Dominant overlaps over Red hair giving more Blonde hair

In the same way that Germans are a mix of Gaelic, Scandinavian and Turkish....?
Most European countries have the same contrast in hair and eye colour and skin tone...
It's hardly front page news...

In the Polish language, 'Dom' means house, not gypsy!. In Australia, South Australia, Adelaide, a Polish community centre exists and it is called the 'Dom Polski Centre' ( House of Poland Centre).

I have Polish heritage (and have been told I look Polish), and this is my understanding and logic: Polish people are predominantly of Slavic origin. In the encyclopedias, it use to be commonly written that, the Polish appearance would be that of a blonde with blue, grey or even dark eyes. Now the description includes colours of all complexions. Apparently, it is the Ukrainians (not the White Russians) who resemble the closest in appearance to the original Slavic peoples, who normally have blonde or light brown hair and blue or grey eyes with light or tanned skin.

1) Naturally, over the course of the centuries natural selection has played its part to allow for people living in different areas of Europe to adapt to the climates and landscapes of where they chose to settle. By living in a snowy country, skin is exposed to intensified UVA/UVB rays, which are magnified and enhanced by the reflective snow. Over time, the skin must adapt to this exposure in order for a human to become better protected from the environment and for gene memory to develop and pass on to the following generations. The latter may take some years before it is deeply imprinted into human DNA.

2) Some Poles like to sunbake (and develop an enhanced golden tan) and others prefer not to, so they stay pale.

3) People living in the mountains may gain stronger bones, more muscle mass and possess more human growth factor (due to more exercise) to grow taller, even though I believe, that initially, mountain people would have been shorter to ensure stability in the terraine. Skin may develop more pigmentation over time because the person is closer to the sun and needs the extra protection.

4) Throughout Polish history, surrounding countries have constantly invaded Poland and have probably, left their gene marks on the people in one way or another. Germans, Russians, Swedish, Nordic, Turks, Tatars, etc. The Tatars, Huns and Turks were known to kidnap women and rape them. Ghengis Khan was known to be "a great lover". As a result of this occurrence, some people may have developed darker features and/or a Eurasian appearance from inherited genes for example.

5) Although, it was not originally common practice for Poles and other nationalities to intermarry with other races, it did become a reality when some people opened their minds to different cultures and simply, fell in love with some one they had met. There would have been instances when Poles had fallen in love with dispossessed individuals from the Jewish populations and other minorities. The Turkish and Tatars could have left behind some of their people, who would have eventually, integrated into the Polish community. During the burgoisie era, members of the Polish aristocracy were known to mingle with people from other Europeans kingdoms and countries away from the continent, which resulted in intermarriage (eg. Polish King marries Bona Sforza from Italy).

6) There will always be variations in human individual's looks because everyone is different and we require this, so that we can be distinguished from one another.

3) Why are you so consumed with the idea, that Polish people should only have blonde hair and blue eyes, light skin and be of Arian stock. Is it because you are blonde haired and blue eyed, are you racist or is it that, you are feeling insecure that you may not be of Arian stock. Remember, it is the Germans (and Hitler) that started all that business about Arianism, so why should you be concerned? Open your mind people, accept the differences, be authentic and you will live a happier life!

Merged: Interesting that some Poles are dark

And some Russians look actually more aryan. Take these boxers for instance I just saw on onet.pl:
eurosport.onet.pl/boks/trzy-razy-deski-polak-rozbity-w-walce-o-pas,5519985,14332729,fotoreportaz-maly.html

The Polak is the darker and more gangster looking one with the tats. A lot of Polaks have just as much dark or Mongolian/Tatar blood as Russians and some more so, so why do you guys think youre somehow racially superior to them? Some Poles look almost asiatic or hispanic in nature. They got that gangster white look that usually mixed people (between mexican or el salvador and white) do in the u.s. Sowuit calling the ruskies mongols and embraced the gangsta dark look many Poles have and that mixture with mongol they also have.

In a multi-racial and cultural Europe, there are mulatto Norwegians, black Germans, mixed-race Poles and the rest of the lot!
Hardly surprising.

Recently downloaded some photos from a buddy of mine over in Copenhagen, and compared to when I was there last, Stroget looks much as I'd imagine Dubai or Saudi Arabia, with bright carpets along the sidewalks and turban-wearing, dar-skinned folk selling their wares etc.:-) Little left throughout certain sections though of traditional "Danish" character, except maybe for Kongens Nytorv or Amalienborg.

In Dubai, of course, locals are very much in a minority, and in Saudi it's about 50-50. There are even Emiratis and Saudis of Polish extraction.

As the world grows smaller, we can expect much more diversity.

Better how? You must be one of those black supremacists who agitates against whites and whites only. Are you related to Simon Mol by any chance?

How does that come about exactly? Interracial and intercultural merging doesn't create more diversity. In the end it destroys it. I'm not surprised someone like you has hijacked a website about Poland to preach your own brand of racial intolerance which you hide behind the banner of diversity. Give us some links for African and Jewish forums where you preach there is not enough "diversity" among their very distinct and separate groupings.

Some of us like being able to eat food and buy things from all over the world. We don't feel the need to sit in Spain reading the Daily Mail complaining about foreigners while stuffing our faces with full English breakfasts.

I find it more ironic that you don't see the irony in complaining about diversity in a country like Poland.

But if you still don't get it then here's a clue to your bewilderment: YOU do. YOU think skin color is relevant to everything because YOU are the one who posted that Europe would be all the better only when its citizens become less white and look more like they belong in a favela.

Sure. Right.

I'm not surprised you can't come out and explain your beliefs. Simon Mol had a pathological hatred for whites too even though they opened the door for him and allowed him to live among them.

One moment you say fewer whites makes Europe all the better but when asked about it all you can then say is we are all the same. Which black, Jewish and asian forums do you visit and post the same sort of stuff? I bet you don't. But everyone knows these groups lack diversity. You need to take your message to them.

And the challenge is still there for you to justify your earlier post about why you believe Europe becomes all the better the less white it becomes.

The fact is, the complexion of Europe as a whole has changed with the rest of the world:-) The "brown out" observed throughout the North American workforce, especially among support staff, is multiplied throughout much of the industrialized countries! It's not a luxury any more to not hire a third-worlder at a Fortune 500 company, it's become an economic necessity!!

Now I'm not saying that this is a good thing, because I'm not sure that it is. However, it is what it is and we've simply got to grow accustomed to it.

Not every society is a melting pot, let's face it! Britain, for instance, even Spain, France or Poland, (not to mention Germany, Switzerland, Austria and the Nordic States) cannot be expected to "absorb" the various shades of non-Caucasians as does the urban US. Even there, time has shown that the "melting-pot" mentality has slowly stared to fray at the edges:-)

In south east Italy Normans had a great influence, genetically speaking. You will see more blondes in Bari than in Aosta, that' s for sure!

This map is a joke, the British people are as a whole mostly mousy brown haired followed by dark brown. All GErmans, Poles and Czech are noticeable blonde than your average British people. Dutch and Scandinavians (along some groups in northern germany) are the blondest overall.
