Krakow`s:

Warsaw`s:

Warsaw`s is exciting while Krakow`s is conservative.

They both well represent both cities` atmosphere.

Food / Tata z mamą? 50-50 mixture of spiritus. [10]

Anybody ever hear of tata z mamą? AT least in the Lublin region this was a 50-50 mixture of spirytus and cherry syrup. The loinger it stands the mellower it gets. Very nice but packs quite a kick!

When in high school, I went to a village near Krakow to spend a few days at my rustic classmate`s place. One evening we went to a local wedding and rural boys brought spirit. They diluted it with water but in the wrong ratio, don`t know why - drunk mixer or lack of water - I suppose like 70 to 30. It was extremely strong and burnt the throat like hell. But we drank it anyway as nobody wanted to chicken out and look like a sissy.

Food / Nowolatki New Year's cakes? [6]

Anyone know the custom of baking cakes in the shape of barnyard anuimals at the New Year.

Wow! Never heard of it! Tried to find it in google graphics but to no avail.

The only plausible result is this:
zwyczaje.pl/ciastko-nowolatka-%E2%80%93-zwyczaje-noworoczne

I am afraid the custom is gone.... Pity...

Travel / The best tiramisu in Krakow! [6]

Pasaż Bielaka (Rynek Główny 13 - Pasaż 13) is always a great place to visit. Beside many fancy stores and a great bar (U Luisa), you'll eat there the best tiramisu in Kraków. It's the bottom floor in the cellar. Enjoy!

Never tried tiramisu. Is it ice cream?

History / What do nations of the world owe to Poland and Polish people? [58]

Guys, could you stop gossiping about Pawian and get down to business????? Come on, what is wrong with you? :):):):)

pawian: do you know how many times Poles saved Europe`s ass from barbarians?

Ladies go first even if they post later than others.

Without looking into sources: 4.

First one:

It is believed that Poles saved Europe from bolshevism in 1920.

The Polish-Bolshevik War also known as the Polish-Soviet War (February 1919 - March 1921) was an armed conflict of Soviet Russia and Soviet Ukraine against the Poland and the Ukrainian People's Republic, four nascent states in post-World War I Europe. The war was the result of conflicting expansionist attempts.

en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Polish-Bolshevik_War

To the West! Over the corpse of White Poland lies the road to world-wide conflagration. March on Vilno, Minsk, Warsaw!

Mikhail Tukhachevsky

Gentlemens :) go second.

Pawian misses the U.S.S.R.. It's understandable, he's drinking whiskey instead of soviet wodka.

Good you mentioned vodka.

Stupid thread.

It is typical of various halfwits to say so about other members` threads, especially when they themselves are unable to start a thread which might attract readers and develop into more than 5 posts. They are pathetic little guys green of envy. :):):):):):):):)

Simple, isn`t it? :):):):)

how many times?

Second time: Poles save Europe from barbarians in 1683:

One may recall the decisive charge of the Rohirrim from Tolkien's Lord of the Rings, to get a flavour of what it must have been like, King Jan Sobieski leading his Polish hussars just as King Theoden led his Riders of Rohan.

History / What do nations of the world owe to Poland and Polish people? [58]

Religion doesnt lead to a natural alliance

In case of Polish Russian traditional feud religion played a major role.

but if it did would the orthodox alliance have had the numbers or military technology and if so when.

Sum up Russian numbers with Polish military technology (hussaria winged riders) and the outcome is clear - Europe wouldn`t have had any chance of defence.

At which point in history would the conquest have occured?.

From around 1500 to 1700.

Work / English qualifications to start Teaching English In Poland. Is degree of some sort needed? [123]

A course aimed at showing tutors how to teach English to adults. Certificate of Education in Language Teaching to Adults,
I am not saying it's good - but seems the main schools here insist on it or a B.Ed or similar. (The DELTA is Diploma in,,,)

Oh, I see. Thanks.

But...

why adults only?

In 1990s I ran extensive courses for adults. Today I tutor two adult females.
Sorry, three.

Genealogy / Poles born under Russian control - are we Russian? [29]

yet i doubt if too many Russians would consider themselves to be Mongols, that is despite the fact that politically speaking they take their inspiration from Asia.

Tricky! :):):):)

Then I'm Austrian too. And Hungarian.

Hey, what about Prussian???

Delph, come on, show some sense of humour..... :):):):)

History / What do nations of the world owe to Poland and Polish people? [58]

After a tremendous success of the following threads,
What do Poles owe to Chechs?
What do Poles owe to Germans?
What do Poles owe to Jews?
What do Poles owe to Russians?

it is eventually time to start the ultimate OWE thread!!

Poles versus the rest of the world!!!

If we stick to chronology, the first thing that comes to my mind is that the Polish ruler, Mieszko, chose christianity for the baptism of Poland in 966.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baptism_of_Poland

In 1054, Eastern Church seperated from Western one, creating Orthodox christianity in Kiev Russia, which later developed into Russia, Ukraine, Belarus.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/East%E2%80%93West_Schism

Poland remained in the Western circle.

Imagine what would have happened if Poland had adopted Orthodox christianity? It is natural we would have formed a lasting alliance with our Eastern neighbours. Our united Slavic forces would be invincible. At some period in European history, Orthodox Polish-Russian-Ukrainian troops would have stormed westward and conquered all Europe.

German, French and other guys in the continental Europe, do you realise what it means? Today you would speak the Pidgin Polish-Russian.

Enjoying your today`s independence, do you understand you owe it to Poles?

PS. Prospective participants, chronology of events isn`t binding, feel free to post regardless of it.

Work / English qualifications to start Teaching English In Poland. Is degree of some sort needed? [123]

In Warsaw, the hourly pay from a school for a Polish native ranges from 25zł -50zł p/h.

I get 70 PLN at certain uni in Krakow. But that`s only a few classes per week. Nearly half of my monthly earnings come from a state school. When I counted all benefits I (still) get during the year, with 13th salary and other bonuses, it amounts to 40 PLN per lesson. Not bad. And don`t forget social security etc.

Life / Political correctness in Poland [210]

Mister H:Do not forget travellers

Most "travellers" are just dreadlocked lefties! Since when is that a race or ethnicity? haha

Guidelines on travellers
Only mention the word gypsy or traveller if strictly relevant and accurate.
Give balanced reports, seeking travellers' views as well as those of others, consulting the local travellers where possible.
Resist the temptation to sensationalise issues involving travellers, especially in their relations with settled communities over issues such as housing and settlement programmes and schooling.

Try to give wide coverage to travellers' lives and the problems they face.
Strive to promote the realisation that the travellers' community is comprised of full citizens of Great Britain and Ireland whose civil rights are seldom adequately vindicated, who often suffer much hurt and damage through misuse by the media and who have a right to have their special contributions to Irish and British life, especially in music and craft work and other cultural activities, properly acknowledged and reported.

Work / English qualifications to start Teaching English In Poland. Is degree of some sort needed? [123]

A native Pole who spent 5 years learning English to a level of detail of which they never would want to or wish to STILL has to get a CELTA to be ahead of the game and get a job.

Not really. Most Polish teachers of English work at state (rarely private) schools in the morning and run private tuition later on. I have been reading about CELTA since I joined the forum but I still don`t know what it really is.

Life / Poland needs more immigrants and their children - which nationalities are the best? [518]

Time to wake up and smell the coffee!

Do I have to? I hate coffee.

You honestly expect people to return to Poland just to f**k and pop out kids,

Yes, why not?

but GOD FORBID they thrive and prosper and contribute to job creation, innovation, and economic growth??

These are secondary matters. Unless you mean creating better conditions for future immigrants.......

Maybe THIS is why Poland isn't exactly attracting droves of highly skilled and educated immigrants,

Ok, so have both have immigrants in mind after all. Good.

o why not make the grass greener in Poland?

If you endeavoured to check some easily available data, you would know that we are working on it.

HDI, 2010:

Norway 1
Germany 10
United Kingdom 26
Poland 41 (in 2011 it is 39)
Belarus - 61
Russia - 65
Ukraine 69
Turkey 83
Viet Nam 113
Congo 126

News / Czech drug legalisation threatens Poland [111]

Wow, yourself. You read but you do not understand.

Yaaawn.... you were funny before, but now you are repeating the old boring song. Remember, too much pathos kills the fun. Try to be amusing again. I know it requires some intelligence to avoid repetition but you can do it.

News / Amber Gold and other Poland's suspicious institutions [139]

Well, so much for "democracy" in Poland. Those willing to do something are ridiculed and thus "neutralized".

Don`t be silly. The only thing Kaczyński wants is power in order to take revenge on his political opponents and all people who are against him. He is using Amber Gold scandal in the same way as he has used his dead brother, former President of Poland.

pawian:
Major sin according to Kaczyński!

Explain please.

Come on.... were you born yesterday?
