The Russian government is to outlaw criticism of Soviet military tactics during the Second World War in the latest example of its heavy-handed approach to dissent.

Sergei Shoigu, the emergency situations minister, has called for a law that would make it a criminal offence to suggest that the Soviet Union did not win the War

Mr Shoigu indicated that the legislation would also seek to punish eastern European or former Soviet states which deny they were liberated by the Red Army. The leaders of those countries could be banned from Russian soil, he said.

Liberal Russians fear that the legislation will be used to punish anyone who criticises the manner in which Stalin conducted the war or addresses incidents such as the Soviet massacre of 22,000 Polish prisoners of war at Katyn Forest in 1940, which Moscow maintains was not a war crime.

The battles are little known in Russia, and even Marshall Georgy Zhukov, the Soviet war hero who led the Rzhev operations, barely mentioned them in his biography.

"It has become the fashion to smear the heroic deeds of the Soviet people and to defame the Soviet way of life," said Ivan Korbutov, a retired general who heads the Russian council of war veterans. "Such actions, orchestrated at the behest of the West to discredit our glorious past, must be brought to court and the journalists responsible punished."

How about none of the above, Polish Catholic victims of Soviets are not in the Holocaust. Poland was attacked and lost a country to communisn. Yet God Forgive we not appreciating Stalins return, what were we thinking,.

Killing peoples family I would not concider absurd, and today to want the ones Glorifying past Soviets actions. Do I want to see them feel shame. Yes, shame is an understatement, look at what Germany has been put through. News flash, NKVD was just as bad as Nazis, if not worse yet the Jewish can get the Pope to his knees should someone question the Holocaust. Who was fighting in the NKVD, Jewish. What did Jewish want, "anti-Semitism" it got them Israel. If Jewish can point at Nazis and now Soviets, Ukraianians what makes you think Poland has no right to set the history right. If you are guilty of a crime this horrific you cannot deny forever. Alter history books, lie to your people, hail Stalin but the truth is still the truth and the ones continuing to lie look rather sad.

The time comes with any such turn of history, to move on and get on with paving a future with what is available rather than living life dwelling on what could have been, if only...

In order to have a good road the foundation must be secure and built on trust. No one will ever trust Russia until the past is dealt with, including their own. Build on substandard ground ther first frost will show the sink holes I say.

Not to mention how long do you think the victims should wait for an apology.

What I don't undertand is .....the Russian folk I know refuse to talk or even accept things that have happened in thier recent history. It is as if somthing like " If we don't like the truth then forget the truth and it will go away". For some reason is seems uncomfortable to look at reality. Reality being basic facts relating to history which are laid on the table and you can't change. I would be interested in your opinion on this.

It is because they never had to. Communism would not let the people speak. My beef is more with the Goverment and the way they lie to their own people. I know Russian Americans that look at the bs the Soviet opps Russian Goverment tells the people today and it's no wonder the description of Russian's is childlike. They are treated like children and spoon fed what has been said under Soviet dictatorship. It will not work this time as I see Russian citizens looking at their own powers and saying no, 2 + 2 does not =3.

When you look at the UK history and the Commenwealth this is a part of our history where we should feel ashamed about our past

They did what a military was told to do. Shame for what was done or was not that should have, comes from the commander and chief.

Whats amazing is even "Katyn" can point at Polish anti-Semites as the cause if the writer wants to slander Polish. Such a horrific massacre and to have this finger pointing is ill.

. Also, the arithmetic of Katyń, like that of Schindler's List and Defiance, is dwarfed by that of the Nazi Holocaust, much of which occurred on Polish soil with the tacit complicity of many Polish anti-Semites.

This says so much about anti-Polonism. NKVD are killing off Polish and if Polish tried to defend this attack and a Jewish Pole was fighting with NKVD, was this anti Semitism or being on the wrong side of the fence? How can this be stated without this fact being pointed out. Did they really think Polish would just let them forget this.

How sick is this. Like I have said in the past, Holocaust always claimed for 6 million Jewish, now that the truth is 3 million, where is the 1/2 that should have gone to Poland?

"Israel Singer, General Secretary of the World Jewish Congress stated that "More than three million Jews died in Poland and the Polish people are not going to be the heirs of the Polish Jews. We are never going to allow this. (...) They're gonna hear from us until Poland freezes over again. Germans had a thriving civilization when Ukrainians were living in huts and plowing fields of polish nobles, Germans had well over 7 centuries of heritage before anyone in Ukraine even thought of himself as Ukrainian

You say "plowing fields of polish nobles" yet my family were plowing the fields, building homes, providing food for neighbors, schools built. You make it sound as if Ukrainians were slaves working the land vs. part of a growing, close society. Today the very home my Grandfather built is used by Ukraine as a school. Poland's short independent placement in the east to this day has Polish touch's. Orchards/wheat fields that were nonexsistant prior to 1920 seemed to be forgotten along with the neighbors that were concidered friends.

As for Soviets innocents in this, was it not Soviets that took the first Polish out of the area to Siberia, Katyn and then when the truth of crimes comes to light they quickly point at Ukraine, Nazi's and USA. I did not even mention 1932-33 and who aided Ukraine's people as the Soviets starved us to death.

What is your source for this statement?

This was from a gentleman that was in Siberia and had to wait until Anders convinced Stalin to release the non Jewish. This is in part why when you look at USHMM.org they refer to Anders Army as Jewish army.

Are you saying Jews had high death rate or Poles released had high death rates.......in fact it applied to all released prisoners.

It would be both as the death rate was high and the conditions did not afford a long life span.

ouch, why is it that this did not take place with the ones that were responsible for taking the property? This being Soviet's. After 1989 they come asking the "Forgotten victim's" (Polish) to be reimbursed. Look at the # of non Jewish victim's that lost their country, lives and yet were forgotten in Holocaust funds. Thanks for the site, but this is so hurtful.

Other ranks were sent to slave labour camps but this treatment of Polish deportees was no different to earlier deporations by the Stalinist regime of 'enemies of the state' from the Soviet republics and occupied territories, and not a specific policy directed against Poles per se.

See Kresy-Siberia.org for the full truth. This is the cattle cars that went in four differant waves to Siberia starting Feb. 10, 1940. This was women, children and men. How can children, babies be considered "enemies of the state"? Families were never intended to live to tell. When Nazi's attacked Soviets and amnesty was granted it was the "Jewish Polish" that were first released. Stalin did not want to release any more. It was due to Stalin being in need of more military that more were released. Even the ones released had a very high death toll due to the conditions they were in from the camps.

This depends on where you where in Sept. 1939. Evil comes in many forms. Hitler and Stalin were one in the same. When Nazi's were given directions on how to build "gas chambers" by Soviet's were they thinking of human suffering. If it had not been the need for hard labor workers the Siberia deportee's would have meet the same fate inflicted by Soviets. All one has to do is look at the death toll.

Where Hitler did not care for slaving people to death, Stalin felt he was in a win, win.

I haven't seen accounts of labelling the camps as Polish ones.

Fact is this is an on going problem. Majority of this comes from "Jewish" news from Israel, USA and beyond. Google "Polish Concentration Camp" then try "Nazi occupied Polish Concentration Camps" or for a real thrill "Soviet run Concentration Camps". Not as many Jewish in Soviet camps and they also ran the camps but they were also there.
