Language / English words of Polish origin [19]

Aside from that, there aren't actually many English words there. There are just Polish foods, dances, and so on.

Are there any other English words of Polish origin beside those listed on Wikipedia's site?

If you are aware of any I would be happy to see it.

Yet, with so many reliable sources out there, why go to Wikipedia?

Give me one example of a website similar in scope and precision to Wikipedia's site.

History / Scotland and Poland. Mutual connections since 1576 [45]

Who is a famous "Polish" Scot (some sources say he was an Englishman whose family had settled in Scotland) whom my generation admired for his bravery and honour?

Life / Wage - Expenses = It Doesn't Add Up!!! [33]

My job (Engineering, English) would get me ~1700zl a month.
A decent 1 room apartment/unit would run me in at $1500. So thats out of the question. I would have to settle for renting a small room for $1000zl.

That leaves me with $700zl for food, living supplies, transport, bills (water, electricity, phone), etc.

Bills would cost around $300 a month. So $400 is left.

Food could cost around $400 a month (and thats limiting), so so now I have $0.

Engineering job in Poland would most likely get you a net income of 6,000-10,000 PLN

$1500 = 4400 PLN for 1 room appartment? that would have to be a really big room...1 room would most likely cost you around 500 PLN...and so on...

History / Władysław Sikorski remains to be exhumed for cause of death [43]

i guess but that's not my thinking here. it's not pointless

definitely NOT pointless.

if results confirm brit story this exhumation will not only be pointless but embarrassing for Poland...

am i incapable of observation?

that remains to be seen

History / Władysław Sikorski remains to be exhumed for cause of death [43]

you seem to contradict yourself there. is it noble or is it pointless then.. make up your mind.

it's definitely NOT pointless.

History / Władysław Sikorski remains to be exhumed for cause of death [43]

hen, how to rule Poland taking in consideration religious differences. Foreign factor always managed to use those differences in order to divide Slavs even more. Considering those religious antagonisms, Russian failures on Slavic West were turned into real tragedies for Slavic world.... Russia was in unpleasent situation and needed reson to retreat from Poland

Crow, I admire your persistence but I think that most Poles are incapable of thinking about Russians as friends or allies for various reasons. Which is in my opinion a mistake. I am a Pole too but I understand your argument. I also think that religion is not a major factor for what you called an antagonism between Poland and Russia today. Today, this antagonism is politically motivated, fueled by media, sustained and nurtured by the elites for political reasons as well....In Russia, well...Russia is a different story...Personally, I think that Russia should have abandoned and condemned its soviet past. It could have given a ground for better relations between today's Poland and Russia.

History / Władysław Sikorski remains to be exhumed for cause of death [43]

We may finally know the truth about how our General died

Search for the truth is always noble; however, I'm afraid this investigation is not going to change ANYTHING...yet another pointless exercise.

Let's assume for a moment that Polish investigators proved the following: Brits assassinated Sikorski. Question: Is our government going to break all relations with UK because of some events that took place 65 years ago? I don't think so...

So my question is: what problems is it going to solve for today's Poland?! How is it going to help Poland?! Is this going to bring more jobs to our economy? Is it going to help build highways and freeways?!!! These are FAR more important issues than results of this investigation...

News / What if Poland has decided to withdraw from the European Union? [54]

if serious, Polish elite must be ready for every situation

Agreed.

ou can’t close your eyes on mega trends of EU politics, which is in its essence- imperial and anti-Slavic

I wouldn't call EU imperialistic or anti-Slavic but I tend to agree with skeptics. Recently voters in Ireland, France and Holland have shown that EU is completely detached from ordinary people.

News / What if Poland has decided to withdraw from the European Union? [54]

Would then Poland become a country like Cuba or North Korea in the other European countries eyes?

Perhaps it wouldn't be regarded as such but I am almost certain that it would cause quite a stir in the EU simply because Poland is one of the biggest countries in the EU and the biggest new member.

I can imagine all sorts of trouble for EU and for Poland. Nothing I would like to see.

There is no point in this kind of speculation, is there?

News / Father Rydzyk: Any comments? [28]

Without having any connections with communist party or SB (lol), I'd like to make two points in this discussion.

1. Rydzyk's ideas (especially about Jews) lead straight line to racism and hate which is in clear contradiction to what Catholic Church teaches these days. I mentioned that just because (as I suspect) many members of this forum are members of Catholic Church.

2. Rydzyk's influence is often exaggerated for political reasons. One tv station, news paper and one radio station hardly constitutes a media empire.

universal rules of propaganda

Where do you want to stand?

I would rather stick to the facts instead of myths and propaganda.

History / Poland: we have an interesting history. [72]

Very interesting chapter in our history.

Not to me.

1. Thousands of people were forced to settle in Siberia, killed or injured.
2. Poland lost the rest of remaining autonomy within Russian Empire.
3. The country was destroyed and robbed by the Russian forces.
4. Nation's elite was killed or forced to immigrate.

Etc.

All of the above apply to virtually each Polish uprising or insurrection.

Life / Bloody Priests in Poland... [58]

did you even read any of those articles you have posted here?

Yes, I did.

The Catholic Church on the other hand had a different policy towards its pedophile priests.

The point here Slick is not that we don’t have the same problems - but we deal with them better.

I am not here to defend or attack the Catholic Church or Episcopal Church. For me it's all the same. The idealistic view of the church you belong to does not surprise me. However, your approach towards faith is somewhat strange as lesser pointed in the post above.

Love / do polish women make good wives as opposed to their western counter part? [29]

From what i hear polish women are very traditional women, they love to cook , clean look after the children, make sure supper is ready for the family. Are all polish women like this ?

Some polish women will do all of the above, not all of them though.
Are you looking for a wife or maid?
