Genealogy / trying to trace Pater Michael [2]

If you have his naval number then you should be able to get his records from the relevant MoD department. I assume you know his full name and have some sort of documentation connecting you to him? You will need this to provide to the MoD office. The records should have his date of birth, place of birth and parents names and occupations.

Genealogy / I have found the birth place of my grandfather......Do I..... [2]

Before travelling try and contact the local parish church and archives. It will take some time to locate living relatives, if there are any still living there, by which time you would have already left. An alternative to this would be to get a private researcher to do this for you.

Genealogy / Anyone know my dad, Ignacy Laszkiewicz? [5]

Vilnius = Wilno

When did your father arrive in the UK? He must has been naturalised and that document should have some relevant info about his parents, etc. Also if he was enlisted in WW2 the relevant MoD office will also have his records.

History / THE POLES ON THE FRONT LINES OF WWII [92]

I think the Poles who served under German colours were forcibly conscripted as opposed to volunteered. The issue came up during the Allied advance into Europe when (I think) both the 1st Polish Armoured Division and Ander's 2 Coprs made good their losses by assimilating Poles captured by the Allies.

Genealogy / LUDWIK WEBER POLISH FORCES IN MIDDLE EAST 1943 any relatives? [3]

The MoD will have his records but you may have to know what specific unit he was in. Other than that, you will also have to prove your relationship to him. A birth certificate should suffice but you can still enquire beforehand to determine what exactly they want to see.

My father served in WW2 as did at least 3 of his cousins, one of whom appears on the Katyn Memorial. My grandfather served in a Artillery Regiment in WW1. My great-grandfather also was a soldier.

Apparently I still have relatives living in Poland, but I've never been to Poland, and unfortunately do not know the language, either. One day.

Get in contact and make the trip. You will not regret it.

Genealogy / Jankowski, Yankoski, Kizielewicz, Gmurczyk surnames [6]

His daughter, my grandmother, was Josephine Kisielewicz Yankoski.

Probably not then. My great (x3) grandmother was Anna Kisielewicz (1776-1856) and lived in Sokal, now in Ukraine. She married a Jerzy Dziadyk.

Life / Why can't Poland recruit Polish soccer stars? [42]

I think one of the most glaring disappointments has been the fact that Poland has had some good youth squads (the U-17's, U-19's, etc) over the past 15-20 years but for some reason have never come through to the 1st team. The biggest disappointment for me was the 1992 Olympic team, great things were expected but never materialsed.

History / Polish soldiers get Dutch medals after 60 years [6]

According to historical accounts Sosabowski said BEFORE the operation that Market Graden was poorly planned and conceived. The British ignored him and got thousands of men slaughtered. The blame should be put on Montgomery and Boy Browning.

Genealogy / Betley: In search of family and family roots, can you help a soldier? [5]

There is an immigration record for a Stanislaw Betiej (age 30), wife, Bronslawa (age28) & son, Wladyslaw (age2) arrived NYC on 8/3/1951. Threy were going to 900 Wood St., Chicago. Is this your family?

Does'nt the immigration record state the last residence and place of birth for Stanislaw? It should also have the name of the person at the Chicago address.

History / Władysław Sikorski remains to be exhumed for cause of death [43]

A family friend who served on the ORP Dzik during WW2 always believed that the British were behind Sikorski's death. According to him, Sikorski was unhappy with the treatment of and roles assigned to the Polish armed forces by the British and wanted to remove the Polish forces away from British command and place them under American command. This would have had the effect of removing several elite units thus further relegating Churchill to a bit player.

Anyways, that was his opinion.

Genealogy / 20 y/o female (pics & summary) trying to clarify my polish heritage [26]

How about trying to go about this "scientifically" and methodically?

Start with what resources you have immediately available to you, your grandmother and also whatever documentation she may have, birth records, etc. Once you have found a piece of paper stating that (lets say) your grandmother was from Poland then that's the base for researching your Polish ancestry..........if you really want to do this. Enough of the face, nose and eyes stuff.

Assuming that the surname "Francz" has not been changed then you can start looking around on ancestry.com.

Genealogy / Polish II World War Records [5]

I think they require contact by post rather than e-mail.

Correct, also make sure that you have documentation to provide them with, such as your connection to your father and any service records in your possession.
