Genealogy / Searching for my Father- Help Please! [14]

it could be anything!

Precisely. Trying to read the phonetics it could be SZURKIEWICZ and there a few of those around, but as it could be anything it's not good to search for someone this way.

Genealogy / Is Grudnik name Polish? [11]

My last name is Grudnik

The country of origin may have been different at the time, what you need to find out the name of the place and not just the country. I've family coming from the same place, that once was under Austrian then Russian before ultimately reverting to Poland.

Genealogy / COUNT AND COUNTESS DECROIX [15]

Looking for their estate which was near a park and a hotel called Mirror Lake Hotel?? Before, late 1800s early 1900s.

You may you will be hard pressed to find anything that existed before the war, other than those buildings rebuilt after it. The only thing that springs to mind is the Lazienki Park, but that belonged to the Poniatowski family.

Do you know the name of the woman of Polish descent - it might be easier to search that way. Most of Decroix family as I'm sure you know are in France or Spain.

Genealogy / Surnames Janiewicka and Weshesfisky and Dumore [4]

Rose states she was born in Austria, as were her parents. She notes Polish as her native language.

Poland had been partitioned and had come under Austrian rule. That may explain Polish as her native language. Russia also helped itself to parts of Poland. You need to compare the history with the years they were born and lived.

Genealogy / COUNT AND COUNTESS DECROIX [15]

Decroix.

The website baza.archiwa.gov.pl mentioned by nana has reference to a De La Croix in 1864 but in Plock which was/is considered as in the Province of Warsaw. But can't find any reference to a hotel with reference to a mirror. There are many variants on the spelling of DeCroix maybe these need to be explored too.

Travel / Zakopane in April [7]

Krakow-Myślenice-Zakopane

Assuming you mean a motorbike, you will find the roads will get progressively steeper and more winding. Myslewice is just over 300m above sea level and Zakopane is 715metres however Zakopane is lower than the mountains you will passing through.

Weather-wise - there is still a possibility of snow on the ground. This year for instance, the snow started melting beginning of April in Zakopane, but higher there was still snow. Temperature was around 10 degrees C.

As the area is mountainous the snow keeps longer than further inland

Genealogy / My ancestors named Blankinsee came from Potok, Prussia [5]

Blankinsee

Tried various options on this surname and can only assume the surname options are phonetic or somebody couldn't read the writing. You'd be hard pressed to find anyone by any of the options suggested.

Genealogy / Where is Brazazowa or Brazazowka? [24]

is a village called "Brzezówka"? Is it in Galicia?

Just looked at the ship's manifest (the written not the transcribed version) It's Brzozówka.
The one near Tarnów came under Galicja but so did one in Białoruś

There are some scant details on the net about the place.

I've just looked it up again. Anyone born in the village near Tarnow would find birth registration details in Lisia Gora as Brzozowka was too small to keep records. It is the Lisia Gora near Tarnow. Hope this helps.

Genealogy / Fathers name Szulc [6]

born in a village called Adamow near Radomsko

You may need to contact the Parish in Radomsko which appears to be the nearest to Adamow. Although anything over a hundred years will be held in central archives - unless the parish has kept them.

Genealogy / Family Secret - Piaski, Lublin --- Help Needed. [16]

the Russians

It wasn't the Russians. Lublin was a Nazi stronghold.
Secrets are sometimes best kept that way. If the family doesn't want to divulge, it suggests some painful reason.

Genealogy / meaning of: rewolucjoniści polscy [8]

Do you think this was writen in docs in a good or a bad way? :-)

It is difficult to say whether the expression was written in a positive or negative way. However, one would imagine if the person was troublesome to the Russians she would have been sent further east to Siberia. Potentially she could have pretended to be communist to survive. Her subsequent involvement may indicate whether she was a communist or not.
