Life / Most overpriced things in Poland? [72]

Yeah, many people in PL use a relatively big part of their salary to get gasoline. Esp if you compare to USA.

Life / Could I live on 2000zl in Poland? [30]

but If he wants to rent the flat for himself then that's a different story.

At least where I live it's easy to rent a small flat in the suburbs for 800-1000 zl + bills per month.

Life / DO ADULT CHILDREN EXPLOIT THEIR PARENTS IN POLAND? [22]

I think it's not so different from many other countries.

But older people in the family (or relatives) are taken care of better in Poland than in many other countries I have seen.

Definitely houses

True. But it's the same in whole Europe. So compared to other European countries flats/houses are not so overpriced.

Life / Could I live on 2000zl in Poland? [30]

The average gross monthly wage across Poland in August 2008 was PLN 3,165.

We're talking about your money after you paid the taxes.

Guys so am I correct in saying I want to be earning 2500zl?

You can live a good (but not luxury) life on 2500 zl in most cities (maybe except Wawa and Krakow). It's more than most Poles get per month.

What is Belarus like compared to Poland?

Just google it and you don't want to move there.

Life / Could I live on 2000zl in Poland? [30]

Thanks for the input so far. Here in England the cost of living is very high so many of us are used to budgeting, finding the cheapest deals etc. One thing I did notice in Poland was the cheap cafe's they have. You can get a basic meal for next to nothing.

Cooking your own meals are highly recommended if you want to live on 2000 zl per month.

2000PLN per month............absolutely, definitely not, no way. A week maybe, a month? - no chance, not even close.

Difficult to know wheather you're ironic or drunk.

With some experience (and contacts) you can live also in bigger cities on 2000 zl. I know Polish students who live good student-lifes on less than 2000 zl per month in bigger cities like Wrocław etc.

Many Poles live on less than 2000 zl per month. So it's not impossible, but it's not easy, esp. not for a foreigner. Choose one of the smaller cities in Poland. You can get a small flat in the suburbs for 800 zl/month (+bills) if you have some Polish person to help you.

For sure, it's possible to live on 2000 zl in a smaller city. Look at all the Polish students.

Life / Most overpriced things in Poland? [72]

Paki shops must have arrived in Poland at last!

Hehe... it was actually in Real (in a galeria).

Even transport isn't cheap any more

City-buses is about 2.50 zl. For me as a student, bus from Wawa Airport to centrum is 1.40 zl (30 min.). Train (2nd class) Wawa-Bialystok (about 200 km) is 45 zl (23 zl for students). I think you can travel rather cheaply in Poland compared to other countries.

But the cost of living in relation to average salary is terrible in PL.

I know one thing that is not overpriced. Last week I bought watermelon for 0.99 zl/kg. And it was good quality. Haha, completely crazy.

Life / Poland Vodka Production and alcohol drinking culture [16]

Europeans in general drink a lot of alcohol, that's the way it is.

I think Poland's vodka days are waning and beer is now the drink of choice.

Still a lot of vodka. But beer, and also wine (among woman), have increased in popularityin PL.

Oh, I never realized some people have trouble rolling r's. But I googled it now, and it's actually true. I also saw that there are a lot of videos on Youtube where they teach people how to roll their r's. So take a look at that. Good Luck!

Life / WHY IS DISCO POLO WORSE THAN RAP CRAP? [20]

Example of a Disco Polo song...

Music died when techno was born!

The first time I heard techno, I thought the DJ had a status epilepticus.

Life / WHY IS DISCO POLO WORSE THAN RAP CRAP? [20]

Disco Polo was extremely popular in the 90's.

Now most people say they don't listen to DP. It's considered to be a little countryside-oriented/old-fashioned/geeky. Still many people do listen to DP, even if that's not the first thing they scream out to their friends. At the Juwenalia (big student occasion) there was a koncert with a very famous DP-band, and there were very many people there.

So what people say they listen to, and what they really listen to, is not always the same thing.

I prefer rock, but there are nice DP-songs as well.

Life / Most overpriced things in Poland? [72]

Yeah but 6 euros for a small glass of beer in stockholm, was crazyness!!

Alcohol is very expensive in Sweden because of taxes on Alcohol. 50 cl beer in the pub/club is normally like 6 €.

Language / Masculine Accusitive / Genitive - fruit, vegetables... [7]

Every grammar book says that the verb jeść governs the accusative case

Of course, sorry, my brain wasn't woring properly.

Unfortunately there is a large group of nouns that are inanimate by the meaning but decline like animate nouns.

So far I decline all inanimate nouns as acc=nom, and all animate acc=gen. When I get energy to learn which inanimate decline as acc=gen, maybe I'll do it. But people haven't been laughing at me yet.

Life / Most overpriced things in Poland? [72]

Well if you are a tourist they charge you 200-300% extra haha

Especially if you take taxi to like Stare Miasto in Wawa. Then you have to know some Polish voc. to tell him what you think about it.

where you come from (sweden) everything is like 300% more expensive

Actually, some things are more expensive in PL than in Sweden. Eg. some electronics, imported food, jeans etc.
If you want to go to an expensive country, go to Norway, one of most expensive countries in the world. Totally crazy prices.

Life / Most overpriced things in Poland? [72]

Generally, imported things are overpriced. The same thing from a Polish company and imported usually differ a lot, even if quality is about the same. In Sweden it's the opposite, imported things are usually cheaper.

Where you get most for the money (compared to other countries) is, for sure, the service sector.

Taxis

Where I come from Taxi is like 300-400% more expensive than in PL.

Travel / Driving In Poland ( scooters ) [11]

it will probably take you longer to get the licence than to die on the roads afterwards. I've seen the way cars treat them - I pass the road-side memorials every day.

And how do scooter-drivers in Poland drive? Seriously.
