USA, Canada / Obtaining Church Records in U.S. [19]

Hi,

Are they limited to baptismal certificates from NY, or do they have some for the rest of the country?

USA, Canada / Obtaining Church Records in U.S. [19]

Thanks for your tip. I'll give them a try. I got the marriage certificate of Wasyl and Helen from the County Clerk, but I'm still looking for my grandfather's baptismal certificate.

Genealogy / Research in SE Poland [56]

I was glad to add him to the site. If I know the location of a relative's remains, I add a memorial for them. Thanks for the info about your grandmother's middle name. Yes, he's still in Florida for the time being. Have a great day, too.

Genealogy / Boczek-Dynow-family search [7]

I was told the Lemko (Ukrainian) records in £ubno were destroyed during Akcja Wisła (Operation Vistula) in 1947. That's when the Lemko families were forced out of their villages by the Polish government and placed in Russia, Ukraine and other parts of Poland... if memory serves me right. Supposedly, some of my relatives are still in Russia and Ukraine according to some of my family.

Genealogy / Boczek-Dynow-family search [7]

My great-great-grandmother Ewa Buczyk was born in £ubno, a village outside of Dynow. She was married to Dymitr "Matt" Kociełko or Kociołko. Could it be possible Boczyk was Buczyk? If the o was ó, it would sound the same as my family's surname, I believe.

Language / Polish Suffixes Indicating Relationship [2]

I would like to know more about the suffixes which are attached to surnames to show a relationship. I read that -owa is wife of "insert surname," and -owna is daughter of "insert surname." Are these correct? What are some others? I'd appreciate any help.

Genealogy / Poles/Ukrainians in Hamtramck, MI [14]

Yes, I am related to Wladyslaw Lawicki. His wife was Raesel Lawicki and they had 3 children, Pauline, Louis, and Walter. Pauline was my grandmother. They lived in Hamtramck 1900, 1910, 1920, and 1930.

Do any of these names run in your family.

Hi,

This sounds very similar to the last name of my great-uncle Andrew (probably born Andrzej) Lewicki. He was born in 1924 and died in 1999. His wife Anna Kocielko Hancasky-Lewicki (1921 - 1996) was my grandfather's only known sister.

Also, according to the SSDI, a Wasyl Kocielko lived in Hamtramck. He was born in 1914 and died in 1973. That was my great-grandfather's name, but this man is not him. He was probably from the second wave of Kocielkos who came to the U.S. in the 1930's I was told about.

Genealogy / Wojtczak SURNAME - question for native Polish speakers [11]

My grandmother had a friend with that last name - she never married. I don't know if it was spelled the same way, but it was pronounced like it. She died about 10 years ago and lived in Calumet City, IL.

Genealogy / how many know their own family histories? [139]

I'd love to trace back to Polish records myself, but it's far too expensive. I'm still hoping the parish in Lubno writes to me with records.

Genealogy / Looking for a Zielony and Jasicki surname from Tarnow [5]

Merged: Other Relatives near Tarnow, Dąbie in Poland

Hi,

I would like to locate relatives from my most distant branch of my Polish line, but a relative asked me not to post any names. If you recognize the name of the villages, please contact me via PM. She wants absolutely no names from this family online, so I'm being very careful with this. If we do establish a connection, please respect her wishes and not post them anywhere. My great-grandmother was born in Dąbie, Poland on December 15, 1889. Her mother was born in near Róża in 1857. These villages are near Tarnow. The family is very large, and many came over to the U.S. Thanks to the online records for Zasow Parish, I traced the line to the late 1700's.

One of the surnames which was not forbidden for me to post - since it's already online - is the Blach/Błach surname. My great-grandmother was born Weronika Błach on December 15, 1889 in Dąbie. If anyone recognizes this surname/place, please let me know. No other names will appear to the public apart from a PM or email.

Genealogy / Looking for KOBAK ANDREW [6]

His children's names sound more Russian than Polish/Ukrainian. The last name sounds Polish, though. Was his wife Russian?

My great-grandfather's first name was Vasyl/Wasyl (pronounced the same as VAH-sil) - both are the Ukrainian form of Basil. Bazyli is the Polish form. I believe Ivan the Terrible's father was named Vasiliy, so it might be the Russian form.

I know this isn't what you asked for.... But I have Kaiser in my family. It was my maternal grandmother's maiden name. Her great-grandparents came from Bavaria, Germany. They settled in La Salle and Livingston Counties in Illinois.

Genealogy / how many know their own family histories? [139]

One branch of my Polish genealogy goes back to the late 1700's. My grandmother's second cousin, though, asked me not to post inquiries with the names. The other branches of my Polish family are still a mystery.
