UK, Ireland / Those dreaded English Guy / Polish Girl stereo types!! [11]

It has nothing to do with Polish/british sterotypes dude. A lot of girls would have acted the same or at least thought the same thing. Women are insecure and don't trust men - maybe this one had a bad experience with a horn dog ex-bf.

Work / For all English teachers in Poland (who work for only $1000 a month) [102]

Currently I am a 3rd year university student, hoping to become an elementary school teacher (here in canada). As my username suggests, I am a polish canadian and would really like to work in Poland however I think the wages are too low. I visit my family in poland every couple of years and I just can't believe how little some people make. I was told that the average english teacher in PL makes around 2500-3000 zl/month starting! That's only $1000 CDN which is about 3 times less then teachers make here in canada (starting salary). And prices (for many products) in poland are not that much different than here in canada. Now, from browsing the forums I've noticed that some of you work as teachers overseas for many YEARS. Why?? Why do you accept so little pay? Does anyone think about retirement and pensions? Working in PL as a teacher gives you nothing in the way of a pension/benefits. Do you do this because you were not accepted into teachers college? I'm sure some of you do this for a short period of time for fun, travel and experience, but what about the others who do this for many years?

Who the hell changed the name of my topic?? If you don't like what i wrote make your own topic. Are you angry about your low pay?

Anyone else have any comments/responses to my post? I'm sure there's more english teachers on here who have something to say...

Love / Shall we go back to interracial relationships for a bit? [50]

Well i'm Polish-Canadian (born in PL, grew up in Can.) so I have a pretty good idea of what you're thinking. My parents wouldn't be very proud of me if i brought home an African women and my family in PL would be shocked! An interracial relationship WILL definetly cause problems/embarrassment for your family and theres really no way to go around this. Poland has been a homogeneous country for quite some time and most poles (especially the older ones) just simply don't like non-whites. I go to PL every couple of years or so and i still hear some people (again mainly the older generation) calling non-whites "diabel" (devil) or "malpa" (monkey). It's terrible but eventually as PL receives more and more immigrants things will change.

You seem very positive and optimistic, so my advice to you is to do what makes YOU happy. You will have to put up with a lot of "crap" but if you feel strong enough go ahead and maybe you'll change the mentality of the people around you. I'm sure things will change once your boyfriend/husband gets a job, shows that he's hard working and able to support you + future kids your family will get to like him.

If you want my $0.02 about this subject, personally i would not get involved in an interracial relationship simply because there are too many cultural differences - especially newly arrived immigrants. I used to study at a very multicultural University here in canada and it was very difficult to connect with people of other cultures.

Also becarefull, this guy may also be looking for an EU passport...

powodzenia!

Life / Real life of a Polish (the Great Woman, or even the Humble Man) :) [20]

Marriage is still valued. Though living together is not rare anymore (unfortunately).

I think living together before getting married is an excellent idea. 50% of marriages in Canada end in divorce! Why? Because people get married too quickly - they don't spend enough time getting to know each other and then they realize they're not compatible. Then starts the stress, lawyers, ....

However, ideally you should not live together. Instead, see each other everyday or whatever but go to your home at the end of the day - or take turns spending the night at each others places:) It would probably be best it terms of determining if you're "compatible."

News / POLAND's ENERGY -WHAT is it? WHERE is it from? [29]

Mostly coal power. However in the past couple of years Poland and Lithuania have been discussing the construction of a nuclear power plant outside of vilnius - hopefully they go ahead with it (lots of power, clean and maybe they'll shutdown some of those coal plants).

As for renewable/environmentally friendly/solar/wind etc. power plants? Nope. A couple of days ago in the news i heard that Poland, USA and Russia (i think) care least about the environment.

News / POLAND's ENERGY -WHAT is it? WHERE is it from? [29]

Polish Canuck or may i call Kanadol

after Chernobyl all Poland needs is a fukin@ nuclear plant

lol @ kanadol - my family in PL always calls me that!

Sounds like you don't know much about nuclear power. It's ok, not many people do. It's actually very safe here in canada. Canada has its own nuclear plant design (CANDU - read about it - google) which is one of the best designs in the world. Chernobyl wasn't really an accident - commie scientists were doing a very foolish experiment for "show." They by-passed many safety features and were very careless. I don't have time to get into the details but you can google it.

Now obviously wind power (like off the danish coast), solar power, etc. are the safest methods of power generation, they just don't produce enough juice.

How do i know this you ask? I used to work in a nuclear plant as an engineer!

However, i would disagree with nuclear power on its price. its NOT cost effective to build. No company will build a plant unless the gov't pays for it. (our money)

Nuclear plants are very profitable. Yes the gov't has to help finance the (10 year long) construction but when it starts producing electricity it also produces lots of $$$. Americans want to build these plants and so does my provinces gov't.

Hahaha. I'll start a race of super humans.

Actually most people at the plant are exposed to more radiation from their TV's at home than they do at work.

Law / I want to go to poland but worried about the army [38]

I travelled to PL 3 times since i turned 18. In 1997 (can't remember the date) they changed the rules for conscripting people in the army. If you are in school or hold another passport in addition to your PL passport then you are exempt from serving. Last summer when i re-entered PL via train from the czech rep. the border guard noticed on my polish passport that i had not yet served in the army. He asked where i lived and when i said canada he said oh ok.

You can travel without any worries!

History / Polish Jews - they changed their Jewish surnames to Polish [532]

So what? Jews all over europe changed their names! They had to! Anti-semitism was very common throughout european history.

Why aren't Polish people generally very tolerant of others?

Intolerance/racism exists all over europe. Jews in PL, "Pakis" in the UK. Poland, UK, it's all the same.

News / but where do they all come from...? [17]

Eastern Poland has lost the most people IMO. I spent much of my time in PL in krakow, czestochowa, and wroclaw (family). I also went to eastern PL (NE of bialystock) to our family's cottage where i noticed that all the young people in the area went to the UK. In the past there were hundreds that gathered at a diskoteka in the village in the evenings - last year it was closed:(

History / Soviet war monuments in Poland - what to do about them? [133]

huh? How so?
Germans were trying to exterminate poles/jews. If i remember correctly, poles were to be worked to death by 1975. Russians were just suppressing poles/jews, they did not have an extermination policy. Therefore they were "less evil."

edit: oops, unless you are talking about latvia...

News / Is the mayor of warsaw's husband German? [13]

This is not very uncommon. Some poles have german last names, some germans have polish lastnames. A german football player comes to mind: Tim borowski - i believe he's german (obviously with a PL surname). In WW2 there were many german soldiers with polish surnames, doesn;t mean their polish. I'm sure if you look up their family trees you would trace their roots to poland. The polish-german border changed many times and populations moved around.

Life / WHY IS POLAND SO DIRTY ???? [44]

I think Poland is fairly clean. The only thing IMO that makes Poland seem dirty is the roads/sidewalks/buildings in desperate need of repair/restoration. This is especially striking when going from the clean/new rynek (wroclaw) to some of the surrounding residential neighbourhoods where the streets look like WW2 ended yesterday.

News / Tinky Winky from tellytubbies outed in Poland [145]

Doesn't the Polish government have anything better to work on? Like maybe the economy, unemployment, jobs, building those f@%#ing highways, corruption, improving the standard of living, health care etc....

Polish government = wiesniaki

It's these idiots who provide fuel to the fire for Polish jokes.

UK, Ireland / The Problem i have with Culture Differences (UK + Polish) [32]

When one of my cousins visited me in canada for the first time several years ago, he was surprised by the positive/happy nature of canadians. For example, everywhere he went he heared people asking "how are you" and responding with " good" or "great, how are you." He told me that this is uncommon in PL and when someone does ask "how are you?" the response is usually something negative like "chujowo" ("sh_tty").

This is probably why your girl views the english society (which i'm assuming is similar to canadian) as being fake. It's not fake though! LOL

Life / How come Poles have 2 cars, mobile phones - but make so little money? [23]

One word: kombinowanie!

People live these "higher" life styles artificially. Rich or well off parents buy their kids everything they want. They also set them up with well paid jobs. In many cases these parents buy everything "na kredyt" and can't go a single minute away from work because that would put them in financial trouble. They do this mostly na pokaz (for show). Not everyone, but most.

Polak potrafi.

Life / How come Poles have 2 cars, mobile phones - but make so little money? [23]

i think the point u r missing is that 'this is materialism' and human nature of pride.. a connection..

True, but in Poland everyone is trying to "out materialize" their neighbour, friend, etc... everyone! Poles are very individualistic and compete with one another.

Last summer i was amazed by this behaviour as everyone tells their friends (and basically everyone they know) about their extravagent vacations to exotic places, what they buy, how much they make.... Things that I would never brag about with my peers/family nor would most here in canada.

Life / Beach fashion. Are Polish youth into baggy or tighter clothing? [48]

boykini LOL
I would also never wear speedos - can't understand why euros still wear underwear at the beach.

As for fashion, i'd say it's similar to north america. Though i think guys in PL tend to dress in "clubbing" attire more often (like young people of italian decent dress here). Also when they wear shorts they tend to pull their socks all the way up like baseball/soccer players - lol i think it looks funny. I guess they don't sell ankle socks in PL.

I hate to repeat myself but dresiarze are also quite popular - you might want to buy some track suits to help "fit in." :)

The ladies dress very sexy... :)

Work / Culinary-Art's degree, thinking about Moving back to Poland from the US [10]

I saw a program on the Food Network here in Canada about a Czech born american who went back to the Czech rep. after 25 years in the USA. He opened up his own restaurant (he was a chef in usa) in Prague and it appeared to me that he is doing quite well.

If you have money saved up you could think about doing something similar, although this czech did this in the mid to late 90's. It may be more difficult today...

Or just teach english, but the money is not that great. Although, it would probably be a good experience for a year or 2.

It's not love buddy, it's lust. She's probably your first love experience/girlfriend. Forget marriage if you're under 30, damn dude, enjoy your life!

How old are you anyway?

A chick with baggage?? Haha, she doesn't love you. She loves what's in your pocket (and i'm not refering to your pecker).

She's a ..................GOLD DIGGER!!!!!!!!

News / Grumpy diplomacy hurts Poland [43]

I don't think this fair

Well i don't think it's fair that i didn't win the lottery last week! Life's not fair, kraut.

I've been quite busy lately and haven't really been following euro politics but, wow i'm surprised poland was given more votes, i didn't think europe would agree to this.

Although i don't know much about the euro constitution and voting and all the rest, i think it's good that poland is fighting for more power - better than doing nothing and getting pushed around. And if the krauts are not happy then they should fight back to stop all this.
