Food / Some cooking spices in Polish [46]

I cook from scratch

Almost every evening.
When I don't, it's leftovers.

I have a need for recipes.

Life / How much do you HATE POLISH PEOPLE and POLAND [1260]

I had an awful job working in a shop where I was supposed to be Assistant Manager. I was working 13-16 hour days, never seeing daylight. Because I wanted to get out, I took a temporary job for four months potting shrubs. 10 years later, I'm still there. Before that I didn't care for plants and didn't even like getting my hands dirty!

You don't start life with the things you like and the things you don't - you learn them or adopt them as you go along.

UK, Ireland / English people attitude towards Poles? [761]

the Police want more money

They always want more money. Who doesn't?
What they need are excuses for more money.
It is all the people that need police, not ethnic groups.

It has to be remembered that if you have left for another country, you are much more mobile than many of the native population. Moving from one town to another to find work is a lot easier if you do not have a family to move with you, or just strong connections to the local area.

Everyone has to be more flexible than before.

Phillybob1982, you do not have any sensible arguments really. Unemployment is at pretty much its lowest for decades - if you don't remember the 1970s or 80s, do a little reading. If you can't find the job you want, you have to find the job you don't want. Or you have to be inspired to make something for yourself - do some training, find something no-one else is doing.

Moaning about other people gets you nowhere. You have to be positive with yourself to get on in life, not negative about others, especially when you categorise them in one big group and dismiss them with one xenophobic wave of the hand.

compile the existing and put them in a sticky

Great idea. Especially for food that is actually sticky!

Food / Some cooking spices in Polish [46]

That is fantastic news.
I have many herbs and spices in my cupboard that only get used in one recipe each.
I've not really had much of a go at cooking any Polish recipes.
I'd like to see something like recipe of the week/month on the forum,

Food / Some cooking spices in Polish [46]

I was thinking of fenugreek, cumin, coriander, allspice.
But then, on closer inspection, there is a definite European look to many of these.
Even so, English food often uses exotic spices.
It is just a shame that English food lost so much after the two world wars.
Rationing and the age of austerity destroyed much English cuisine.
That is why it was opened up so easily to Italian and Indian dishes.
At least the cosmopolitan nature of our food encourages the foodies amongst us to try other stuff, such as Polish.
I am ignoring here the majority of British people who eat s***e.

What about Juniper berries?
These must be used in Polish food.
Great with venison.

Jałowiec?

Food / Some cooking spices in Polish [46]

I imagine only a few of these are really used in traditional Polish cooking.
I always think of caraway as a very central-eastern European spice.
I like the way many languages call Allspice things that translate as 'English Spice'.
It originates from the Caribbean.

Release real stags into the proceedings! When they're rutting.

For hen nights, I don't think releasing hens will have the same effect.

extremely high unemployment rate

Were you around in the recession?

I refer of course to the economic recession in the 1980s.
The UK now has fairly low unemployment, interest rates and inflation.
The problems are more to do with wealth inequality - the gap between rich and poor.
The other problem is the high level of borrowing, but this does in fact keep the economy moving.

only available to Polish

Can you cite any sources for this?

someone is lying

Or ill-informed.

Phillybob1982

So is your problem with Poles who take the initiative to come here and work,
or with Britain for giving rise to a state of affairs you are not happy with.
Could the media have any involvement with people's opinions.
I pay very little attention to newspapers, especially the D***y M**l,
neither do I watch TV. I live life, experience the world through my own eyes, and I talk to people.
Your opinions don't seem to be the dominant ones in the UK that I see.

I was tempted to temporarily take a job in Whittards, a high street shop.
They sell nice coffee and also coffee machines (I need a new one).
Employees get quite a good discount.
They didn't tell me I had to be an immigrant.

job centres

I never found a job in one.
I went a couple of times. They steered me towards benefits.
I went out and looked at places I thought I might like to work in.
I went to an agency that took me on, but got a decent job before long anyway.
I did not have any qualifications, I hasten to add.

Life / Whats gay life in Poland? [140]

political correctness

An oxymoron (a bit like the words 'Pure Filth')

basic human rights

All too easily misunderstood.

ALL humans should be treated equally

Some people try, some people don't,
which is strange because....

It's so simple.

Love / Do Polish men like aggressive women? [26]

He said that two women stripped naked in front of him....on the second date

It makes me wonder what the first date must have been like - any kind of preparation?
Was there a third? (Date, I mean. Or third lady...)

Language / Giving directions in Polish [51]

I'm sure some people in New York have asked for directions in Polish.

Is that New York City or New York State?

Baden Baden, so good they named it twice.

Language / Conjugate TO BE in polish for me? [37]

yestem
yestesh <jesteś>
yest
yesteshmi (the i at the end rhymes with the i in the word big) <jesteśmy>
yestesh-che (the e at the end - like the e in shed) <jesteście>
so (the o is a bit like the nasal French o) - <są>
In fact the letter e is always like the e in shed - never the long e in been.

there not enough to go round for Brits and Pols

Yes there are. Some people have been put in the position where they're better off not working and being paid for by people like me. Some people are too bone idle to work. I get satisfaction from having done a day's work, even if it's not the best day, or even the best job. How low is unemployment in the UK?

News / English vs. Polish hostility [323]

It's just a shame that if someone employs a dodgy gas-fitter,
they're most likely not the ones who have to take the consequences.
For personal use, I only accept the best.

News / English vs. Polish hostility [323]

I accepted a corgi registered plumber recently.
The little dog had a tag on his collar, so I let him sort out my central heating.
I think he was Welsh though.
Cor = small
Ci (Gi) = dog
