News / Thank you Ireland... EUCCP [81]

Hello GaelForce,

That was me who said that Bratwurst Boy just asked a question. Not to worry, easy mistake to make.
Anyway I still stand by my original post.
The E.U. has helped Ireland and your point about the estimated 200 billion in fish taken from Irish waters, I do not think is realistic. I do not know about fishing and I would have to research this or alternatively you could send a link or explain it further.

Ireland has become a first world country since the 1973.
Are you saying that if Ireland had not joined the E.U. we would have made our money on fish and developed like we have?

Love / About Personal Problems (English / Polish relationships) [32]

It seems to me that most of these are related to girlfriend/boyfriend relationships and in particular Polish-English relationships. Not Polish-Polish or English-English
Is it because some of us might have experienced something similar ?

I would assume that to be obvious because we are on a Polish forum in the English language. What I dislike is that a lot of the time the nationality is blamed for things going wrong. Polish women are XYZ etc...

Is it just common sense ?

I do think that humans in general feel the need to communicate their problems and joys, and when emotion is involved we go bonkers and common sence is out the window.

why it is that the original poster gets all the sympathy

Because we have double standards. I definitely do. I think everybody does they just don't admit it. Extreme case your mother robs your next door neighbour, you defender her. Your neighbour robs your mother, holy war breaks out against your neighbour.

And why is the usual answer to these personal problems almost always: He's cheating on you,

It looks to me that people who say these things have had them happen to them and humans love sharing misery. I am amazed at some of the completely erelavant comments made that reveal deep wounds the person has. Like the psycho analysis word association. e.g. Men = cheaters.

What drives these people ? How can they be spotted before a romance begins.

I have never cheated on anyone. I am a manogomist by default. I have been tempted. But I would have thought it obvious why. The excitement.

tip someone over the edge.

I was recently commenting on a certain lady's situation, I thought I might be upsetting her, so I asked twice if she wanted me to leave, I would, the first time she said nothing so I assumed that she wanted my views despite a load of other people snapping at me. Anyway the second time I asked she said to go, I left and still people are giving me carp about it. I was not trying to be smart and I was trying to be cautious about pushing too much of an emotional button. But messed it up all the same. I find it difficult when someone asks for my view and then slams me for giving it.

And in fact a relationship might have been ruined because of one of our comments.

I know where you are coming from and I really like this thread, it is very thoughtful of you Wroclaw but on this one I would have to say that if a person in a relationship can be swayed by something we say on here, then they were bound for disaster anyway.

Hopefully, the answers to these questions will show that we do know what we are talking about and can be trusted.

I am amazed at this forum world and it is quite addictive, I would love to read sociological studies on this form of communication. Can we be trusted, I think not, discussing a matter is one thing but you must make your own decisions and live with the consiquences of your actions. To say that I had a discussion and it led me to break up with my girlfriend would be ridiculous to me, no?

I know my answers are fairly simplistic. I am a much better speaker ha ha ha. But I enjoy this forum so far and I believe there is a lot of potential for it and me to develop.

History / Operation Market Garden, what went wrong? [68]

Ok, It's gonna be difficult playing the devils advocate on this one.

Operation Market Garden didn't go wrong, it was a success because Hitler lost the war.

History / Operation Market Garden, what went wrong? [68]

The British 1st Airborne Division did not secure the bridge at Arnhem, and although they managed to hold out near the bridge far longer than planned, the British XXX Corps failed to relieve them?

I don't know I got this from en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Market_Garden

UK, Ireland / If I was to move to Poland from Ireland... [92]

Has anyone any idea how my life style would differ if I was to sell up in Ireland and move to Poland?

How'a'ya.
I live near Krakow I love it here.
To try to answer your question, I would have to know what your lifestyle is like in Ireland?.
But as for me, the pub culture is very different, people are friendly but it is not the same as Ireland. you have to learn the language. The weather is a hell of a lot better than Ireland, it is one of the major reasons why I am here is that from season to season is like a different country here, extreme tempratures for an Islander.

I find Poles very like Irish in many ways religion, a crap history and drink. This gives very common sence of humour and mentality and understanding of what is right.

The biggest difference is the they had communism, what does that mean? well it means doing anything in an office is peeing against the wind, it is getting better but it still has a long long way to go.

There are cheap flights of course so you can go back as much or as little as you like (I don't bother much at all, I went back a couple of weeks ago, first time in over a year).

When comparing to Ireland I would say that people are not extroverted, this goes for the whole of northern Europe, the cold or something made the people cold. But there are things that jump up as being massively friendly, you learn that they smile with their eyes and have few very good friends rather than mates, drinking buddies, accomplices, people you hang around with etc... Pub culture is very new here, no auld fellas being part of the furniture, but it is catching on big time, so much so I am thinking of opening a bar.

There is a lot more I can say on the subject.

Michal

I have found your comments very helpful. I used to live in a country that I hated . And having read your comments makes me fear that I will turn into a bitter old man. So thank you for that, I will try to change my attitude.

News / Come on EU lets keep it together. [20]

I would love to see Ukraine join. It will not be long before hoards of Ukrainian workers come here to Poland to fill the job vacancies. I think Poland has been rather unfair to them so far, that carp about giving them farming visas i.e. visas to work on farms, finding them working in factories and deporting them is just carp.

Yes of course, I will just clarify my point and I really must be off. Polish Forum is very addictive.
If we are to play with the big boys, India, China, America, Russia we need to get together other wise we will be lost. Fall through the cracks.

UK, Ireland / EU integration of Polish nationals in the UK vs no surrender [43]

Barney

Good man, I was not going to write in this thread but I liked what you wrote.

I think FAS did a "know before you go" package, it might only be for the republic but it could help people. This is the Polish version

News / Why are foreigners coming to Poland and from which countries? [119]

American people are often adventurers

I remember hearing recently that hardly any Americans own passports.
I am not an American basher, I just thought that this was worth a mention. Who knows the way things are going Americans might need to que outside the Polish Embassy in the future for the chance to get a visa!

I do a lot of travelling and seldom meet Americans outside of the USA.

differences between AE and BE...

AE and BE is just the tip of the iceberg. It looks as if the English language will break away from itself in the not so distant future. Irish English for example we do not pronounce "th", it is a lot easier for people learning English not to say "th" as I believe that sound does not exist in any other languages.

The English gave us their language and we gave them back literature.
The only time (american and british) people think it is funny is for the words "thirty three and a third" ;)

Life / Polish movies - what they are like? [34]

Sexmisja
Mis/Teddy Bear
Kingsajz
Great films for many reasons.
I like these films for there historical value aswell. These three films are satires of the times, funny as hell on the surface level and disturbing the deeper you go into them. I think it is difficult (if not impossible) for people who did not live in a communist country to understand what it was really like but I think these films are little insights. But if that is all too much they are also just good fun.

I will look out for the others offered on this thread, I do not remember all the names of the Polish films I have seen.

UK, Ireland / Intercultural experiences of Polish migrants who work and live in the UK [26]

interesting topic

agreed

dear telefonitika
I see myself as a rather pro-active person but sometimes that is not enough when you want to 'force' someone to cooperation. Polish people are not kind of people that will voluntarily help you, especially when you want to discuss something else than how to claim benefits, how to complete aplication forms, where to find a job, etc. You can tell me that I m wrong but that is my personal expeience and nothing else. And what is more, I do not live in Sheffield. I live in York where the Polish community is definitely not as developed (if it is at all) as it is in Sheffield.

I think this messed up your points. I had not seen this post before and would have liked to have added my thoughts on the matter. It is a very hostile post, why?

Anyway if you are still interested we can discuss this matter further, am sure if you are a little patient it will pay off, all people do not react well to hostility.

I have lived in several countries. I am Irish, born in Dublin and I have worked in several parts of England at different stages and I never felt at home, I would definitely go so far to say I feel much more at home here in Poland (even with the language barrier) than I ever did in England. It is a cultural thing. I do not dislike a majority of English people, there is good and bad everywhere.

this thread is probably dead?

You have just covered half the world.
