Language / Any sweet Polish phrases [255]

sapphire, misiu, misia are wonderful, sweet words as long as you don't have any extras on you :)

Niunia, Niunius, Niusia are endearing words used alone and often added to your real name.
Your sapphire name could be sapphiruniunia, aune above could be called auniusia etc

Language / Polish letters Alt-codes... Anyone? [60]

telefonitika,
Assuming you work with Windows XP:
1. Control Panel
2. date, Time, language and Regional..
3. add other languages
4. details
5. key settings - choose Polish (Programmers)
6. add - it should put the icon in your task bar
7. click Language bar next to key settings to see if the adding of the icon to the task bar is checked.

It should work. Then type as usual. When you come to a letter that you want it to have a little "thingy" press Alt and your regular font.

press Alt and your regular font.

Correction: press Ctrl & Alt at the same time and then the font ć,ś,dż,ź etc

Love / What do Polish women look for in a relationship? [70]

Fish, I totally agree with you. No money in the world would be the lone cause to make me fall in love in a man. It is his personality as well as his looks which make him attractive. And, if he has a good job record, it helps too. It doesn't have to be a high end job. That's just the responsibility trait.

Life / The strangest things in Poland [468]

Yes, I ate the sour cream sandwiches too. They were actually pretty good then.
How about another "special": a lard with onion and bacon spread. Also, mmm, mmm good. Sometimes, just a plain lard with sugar sprinkled on it... The latter reminds me of Oreo cookies and people in US still love them. :)

9. You go for a short visit to your friend or a cousin. All you want is a cup of coffee and a chat, but within a few minutes the table if full of pastry, cold cuts of meat and cheese or a plate of hot soup, a bottle of wine or vodka...

Fast food of any kind is a no no in my book

I agree, I got a $10.00 gift card to McDonald's last August. I still have $1.88 left! That's how big I am on fast food restaurants :)

There is nothing better than my own cooking. :)

Life / The strangest things in Poland [468]

the Poland is one among the extremely few countries in the world, whose environment has been "specially" conditioned so that every human could reach the highest development of character or intelligence,

Wow, this grabbed my attention. Where did it come from? Explain, please

tell me what "misiu" means

Mikey, misiu means a teddy bear but I would not want to be called that...There might be a slight meaning of extra pounds there. I don't think women like this one. It is very nice for a man to be sweetly called misiu, but it's different for us...(I know, it's not fair) :)

There is a thread from few days ago which lists lots and lots of sweet words with translations. Take a peek there.

Life / What kind of toys are popular with children in Poland today [21]

Frankly, the people who live on the street do so because they want to be there or there is "something wrong" with them. Lots of them refuse to come to shelters even at 25F below. Often, they are forcefully taken.

I always say that if an immigrant can come to this country with just a suitcase and can make a great living for themselves - just like all Poles do, then the ones who are born here choose the life they have. Work is the answer.

The city, the state, the country can only help so much.

Life / Black people in Poland [357]

Yay!!! a holiday for a Bisexual communist.

:) And I shall enjoy the paid day off anyway. Yeah! More Holidays, please.

Because of cultural and relgious differences? Im not saying it would be the best, but if there was one big culture or religion, maybe these wars would not be going on

This might be a nice concept, but it will never happen. We are nurtured into our ethnic, racial and religious believes and we are willing to defend them. Always.

Life / Help my son with a school assignment on Poland [35]

Krysia, you've done a great job and there is not much to add. I am somewhat disappointed that there was no respond from anybody from Poland...

I think you're much younger than me, but it looks like things are still the same as in 60-ties and 70-ties.
I can only add that I had to wear a dark, navy blue "fartuszek" - a cover up with a white collar. Gosh, this surely saved on clothes, as well as did not allow the "richer" kids show off their expensive outfits. We had to wear it up to the 8th grade. Girls were often reprimanded for not wearing one, but some took the chance. Here is how we looked.

(I have the long piggy tails)

Also, a lot of high school kids had to live in the dormitory. My high school included grade 9 to 12th (I know it's different now). I lived in the dorm for 4 years going home only for winter and a spring break. I lived pretty far from the schooling I chose and it was not always worthed to take the bus back home and come back on time for Monday morning class. It was a room with 4 single beds, a table in the middle, 4 chairs and a closed for four. Frankly, they were the most fun years! We had fun.

Occasionally, we got in trouble and as a punishment we had to clean the big dorm bathrooms, but our parents were not told about our "guilt' whatever that was :)

The boys lived on the 2nd floor and the girls on the 1st. There was no visiting allowed after 10 p.m. Of course, we were braking the rules and it was one of the "troubles" we were getting into (smoking in the bathroom was another). There was a supervision day and night, but it was hard for them to keep an eye on 300-400 young residents :)

Well, all of us turn out just fine and I still visit my friends when I go to Poland.
And, this was my 5 cents into the school years in Poland. :)

Life / Help my son with a school assignment on Poland [35]

It is a great idea and a great learning project.
Perhaps, someone who lives in Poland has a younger brother or sister, a nephew or a young cousin who would be happy to exchange emails. Lots of kids know enough English to communicate. It would be a good practice for them as well as it would be at the same level.

This website has a lot of mature subjects and language, too much for 11 year old to come across. Well, just a thought. :)

Love / Native Polish women living in the US - do they prefer Polish guys? [9]

I don't really have a preference. Both kinds have issues.
I was married to a polish man, but now I mostly date American men. I think, they have less expectations when it comes to cooking, cleaning and other domestic chores. Polish men tend to think, it's my job... Also, polish men do not like it when their girlfriend (wife) has her own circle of friends. They get jealous and suspicious.

However, polish guys are excellent in fixing stuff around the house. They seem to be born knowing how the plumbing and electricity works :)
American men have to call a plumber when the faucet leaks (and a washer needs to be changed). However, I don't have my mind set on neither and I'm open to date both.

American men like to go out, movies, restaurants, trips and seem to be more generous. I like that.
