UK, Ireland / Poles in the UK Turn Out to be Star Waiters and Waitresses. [13]

Hey lady, sorry if I offended you.

I'm not stuck up myself - I was merely pointing to an example based on personal experience. If you did me the courtesy of reading my post in full, you would have seen what I meant.

Given though that I've never seen you on this forum before or know you personally, I wont take offence at your comments.

But then I suppose doctors and scientists weren't made to ferry cake and coffee around.

You should refer to Davies book Rising '44. He comments on what happened to some AK officers post war in England. Some distinguished officers ended up employed as wait staff. They were called the 'silver brigade'.

Some (mainly English) on this forum think it's funny and demeaning for Poles to clean toilets and wait on tables. They forget that these types of menial labour are usually simply a means to an end.

I'm happy to say that I waited on tables as a student and scrubbed dishes too. I'm better off for the experience and I'm pretty confident I'm now in a much better financial and professional position than most of our friends on this forum who like to point out Poles are only good for serving meals or cleaning toilets.

Life / POLISH CULTURAL DIFFERENCES [6]

Interesting point - I get this all the time in Oz too. You get an invite to a party somewhere and you're expected to pay for yourself. Or you show up at a party and are expected to bring food, alcohol etc. Growing up around Poles, it was quite a shock to me too.

My mates were shocked when I threw my 30th at a restaurant and footed the bill myself.

I'm very Australian in my attitudes, but my friends can pick out some of my purely Polish nuances.

Polish social customs seem to hark back to bygone days. I'm proud of them and wouldnt change it for the world (event though it can be expensive). The expression on a ladies face when you kiss her hand is priceless.

I'd be interested to know if these old traditions still occur in Poland, or if they are applicable only to the post WW2 emigre generation.

History / Poland's National Heros [17]

General Emil Fieldorf

Great selection. Little known, but what a hero he was. There were so many during that era you'd need a whole book to list them.

There was a good thread on Nile a few months ago. His prosecutor was being extradited back to Poland.

Konstanty Rokossowski.

You're kidding right?

Life / Are the Polish the most proudest people you have encountered? [51]

having lived in more countries than you have fingers

Ever the egotist, eh Bubby. Or are you just pretending to be drunk of PF again?

Seriously though, give us some examples of your assertion that Polish people's perception if further removed from reality than other nationalities. Surely a journeyman such as yourself would have kept a quaint little log of your travels?

Life / AMERICAN-STYLE SLOB CHIC IN POLAND? [24]

'Slav-Chic'

My dad's idea of 'Slav chic' in the 1980's was European leisure pants, a mesh vest, kung fu shoes and wrap around Rudi Project cycling glasses - perhaps a revival along those lines?

History / Only two countries in Europe did not accept XVIIIc partitions of Poland.. [54]

Our two countries had their share of conflict, but never lacked respect for one another.

Good point, and I'd have to agree with you. I think Norman Davies has a small anecdote in God's Playground regarding the Porte's diplomatic response to Poland's eclipse. Can't remember the exact detail, but it was along the lines of a mournful suspension of diplomatic ties without a full severance in anticipation of the revival of Poland - it was a respectful and quite touching gesture.

It makes you wonder - what would have happened if Poland and Turkey allied themselves? Now that would have been a potential powerhouse.

History / Polish Resistance Pardoned? [11]

Hi Racheepie,

RIP to your grandfather. Where was he active during WW2? Warsaw?

I recommend the Polish movie "Ring with the crowned eagle" for a good drama on what happened to AK soldiers at around the end of WW2.

Read Norman Davies books on Poland too.

Regards to you, Dan

History / NORMANISTS AND ANTI-NORMANISTS -the end of historic lie. [16]

Of course they had! Unlike you, Poles, Russians never had any difficulties of mixing with other people. But we do this only at condition of adopting our culture. Here is our strength.

This makes no sense. You agree with me, then say it was the Russians who embraced cultures (unlike Poles), which would suggest you don't really agree. Is this some sort of crazy Russian mind bending trick, 'cause it's working man!

Sure enough it was. Otherwise you would be still there.

Ibid my above comment.

Do you remember how your ancestors had eaten each other in Kremlin?

Aye, I do, with fondness. I was actually there too. Poles have a penchant for eating human brains, so we cracked all the Muscovite skulls to satiate our zombie like lust. You can imagine our chagrin when as expected, the Muscovite skull bore a shrivelled walnut sized morass of slime, which presumably resulted from years of rotgut vodka consumption and little indpendant thought process to stimulate growth.

Noting our concerns, a few of my fellow adventurers drew straws and needless to say, after being left with the longest straw, the consumption of my colleagues allowed me vigour sufficient to last nearly 400 years.

I have no intention to take into account Katyn, I know that this issue is very painfull for Pole, so let's restrict our discussion by the frames of remote past.

You don't need to but can if you wish - I'm sure other members of the PF better than me will be keen to again put you in your place. I'm utterly confident that you will have nothing to add apart from your tiresome accounts rendered in broken English.

What I'm saying is I don't think anyone really cares what you think. You merely serve as a convenient reminder of where you come from and what the world stood on the brink of becoming - shudder.

History / Norman Davies on the Warsaw uprising [50]

If Roosevelt had said 'Yes let's do it' those supply flights would have happened.

Another opinion eh? Don't tell me -you just quoted the concluding remarks from your academic thesis that propelled you to the attention of your print/sweatshop overseers. What a masterful command of analysis you enjoy.

Seriously though, why don't you elaborate on that opinion with some tangible and credible analysis and findings? I know it's harder than quoting Norman line and verse, but give it a shot. If you mess up, I and other members will guide you.

That's why you don't get paid to write books and I do.

You've cut me down Harry and put me in my place, blundering broadsword that you are. In fact, amongst other things, I get paid to read books and other literature, rather than write them.

My day to day professional activities are recorded and transcribed into books too, by beings with greater clarity of thought and wit than you could ever aspire to - namely digital recording machines and electronic transcription devices.

Come back for more Harry - I'm having too much fun.

History / NORMANISTS AND ANTI-NORMANISTS -the end of historic lie. [16]

Later we saved them from total polanisation, but it ia another story of course, I don't want to reopen your old wounds Borrka, not now.

I seem to recall from some historical sources that a lot of the old Rurik/Kievan princes chose to meld with the Polish/Lithuanian Cth. What do you mean when you say 'saved'? That would suggest that it was under threat from Poland, which it clearly wasn't.

Please, don't hold back Con - open some of those old wounds. I'm keen to discuss these issues with you.

History / Norman Davies on the Warsaw uprising [50]

<the same old tired sh!t yet again>

I was quite happy to let sleeping dogs lie until you popped up again with your usual distasteful commentary. It only shows that you are letting me get under your skin. Show some maturity - it's only an internet forum!

You just got upset because you thought you'd storm into the PF and set everyone right, but when you were set straight by others, you got upset, and you remain upset. I hear that chewing on the cheap paper and ink that comprises your literary masterpieces acts as a sedative - perhaps you should partake?

Churchill was the leader who wanted the USAAF bases in Ukraine to be used to supply Warsaw. Roosevelt was the one who stopped them from being so used.

Hhhmm? And? Perhaps you should reread my post which presumably fuelled your tirade. Does my post lend hand to the relevance of your reply?

Not really.

BTW - as you point out in later posts, it wasn't really Roosevelt who stopped the air supply via Ukraine, so what you said wasn't really a fact, but merely an opinion that you rushed into because you wanted to button bash a quick response to me.

You do remember the lesson I gave you on the importance of distinguishing fact from opinion, dont you? If not, I suggest you revisit and revise.

[quote=Harry]Idiot Harry/quote]

Ah, I see the PF's resident card sharping, charlatanic, tourist-flyer peddling hand puppet has re emerged after licking his wounds from the drubbing I gave him a few months ago.

Your infatuation with referring to me as a little boy who needs to go back to school has raised eyebrows. I suspect my colleagues would find it strange me donning the drab grey uniform and polishing apples for the teacher, but hey, a mandate from you is as good as any.

Seriously Harry, have the grace to keep yourself locked in your own dungeon of self importance and delusion. I face angry egotistic people like you everyday and believe me when I say that you hardly pose a challenge. Riposte?

Poland had 2 serious wars - and the 2nd one simply couldn't be won.

I'm in the trenches with you mate - it's the war against ignorant, whining, skinny white legged Poms who think they know it all, but all they really know is how to drink warm beer and pee in ashtrays at the local pub.

:) - does that make it funnier Tornado?

You've mistaken my 'view' of is poland ready to handle another war as an attack on Poland, ITS NOT, i should know as i wrote it!!!!!.

Have you no shame - don't try to extricate yourself from a clearly untenable position brought about by your own silliness and ego. A simple apology to the PF's Polish minority would suffice.

There was a time when we could crush you so easily that most of people here wouldn't have even noticed that there was some war

Well put - blunt and to the point. Of the hand full of occasions when Poles went up against Poms in battle, it was the Poms who came off second best - and substantially so.

i'm answering the questin set by Polishgirlx at the start of the thread.

You're not answering anything - you're just slagging off Poland and pretending naivety is the reason for your silly posts. For all the time you spend on this forum, one would think you would know more about Poland and its military tradition.

History / 64th anniversary of the Warsaw Uprising [71]

People from Polish capital fought to gain freedom.

My grandfather died on this day in 1944 in the Rising - 13 went up, 12 came back. RIP Dziadek - would have given anything to meet you and hear your stories.

In answer to some of the critics on this forum on our preoccupation with histroy, I suppose this is why some of us find it cathartic to discuss these things.

History / Norman Davies on the Warsaw uprising [50]

MrBubbles

A good and timely post. I think the real message Norman tries to convey in this book is that of the fighting spirit of the Poles at the time of the Rising. Their sacrifices rise above the petty socio-political wranglings of Churchill, Roosevelt and Stalin.

I felt sorry for Churchill and the other British bumblers during this period. For all their professed noblesse, they failed miserably, and in doing so, merely gave greater focus and clarity on the AK's selfless courage. As to the British who never gave up on their allies, we remain grateful.

History / Why has Poland been attacked so often by its neighbors? [180]

In my view, Poland was attacked because its neighbours were jealous and fearful of what it could have become. Poland/Lit allowed the existence of Prussia and Russia in an age when political/military/social weakness was crushed.

The fact that Poland's geography was conducive to invasion is only peripheral to the real core issues. Its concepts on government liberty and democracy were exercised in the wrong era, and it paid the price, however unjustly.

History / Poles executed in Warsaw '1939-44' [112]

To you "Ozi Dan": I was named for one of the officers in my fathers AK unit who was captured, tortured and killed in 1943, his name (or pseudonim) was Jan Chamreto (or Szamreto).

Czesc Janek - thank you for sharing this with me. Do you know his proper name? I can look him up for you.

From what I've read, they were sometimes moved around naked prior to execution. I think it was an act of further humiliation.

News / So why is there so much animosity against Poles? [65]

So, if we were so ready to accept their help in wartime why not now?

I recall a Polish tank battalion serving in the British Army post WW2 in a military book published in the 70's, made up of ex WW2 Polish veterans. What's changed? Perhaps the Poms are scared that the Poles will show them up??

My dad's uncle stayed on in the British military after WW2 and rose to the rank of Lt Colonel.
