General Emil Fieldorf a fav of mine who led the Polish underground home army against the German occupiers and refused to collaborate with the communist regime which followed.

Sporting: in recent years I cannot see anyone better than Adam Małysz

General Emil Fieldorf

Great selection. Little known, but what a hero he was. There were so many during that era you'd need a whole book to list them.

There was a good thread on Nile a few months ago. His prosecutor was being extradited back to Poland.

Konstanty Rokossowski.

You're kidding right?

Nobody has mentioned Lech Wałęsa who has only just been admitted to the 12-member Group of Wisemen (over President Kaczyński's objections) which are to ponder and help map out the road the EU is to follow in the years ahead.

Ah! So the President and I agree on something at last.

America`s favorite Polish hero would be Casimer Pulaski, we have yearly parades
and streets named after him.
I think he`s on a bottle of Warka Strong also?

Surely it's Jan Sobieski III - and he's got a GREAT vodka named after him.

FOR THE 20TH CENTURY

I think that little coup d'état in 1926 spoilt his reputation a bit...

this young man was a true hero:

Władysław Raginis (June 27, 1908 - September 10, 1939) was a Polish military commander during the Polish Defensive War of 1939. He commanded the defence of Polish fortified positions in the Battle of Wizna.

That's true, in Illinois and Michigan. Nationwide, I think Gen. Kościuszko is more famous, but that's just based on what I've learned.
