Life / How well is English spoken in Poland? [27]

Eeeeh ... In every tourist city the signs are in English as well...

You obviously haven't been to Wroclaw. Some info is in English.

Life / UNSHAVEN BUM LOOK - STILL POPULAR in POLAND? [15]

If you had asked the question: Do some men wear stubble ?

Then the answer would be: Some do.

But making it seem as if it is a bad thing to wear such growth. Especially in the way you put it, is not going to win you any friends or be taken seriously.

Real Estate / Building new house what are the prices like in Poland? [8]

and how much for 1000 bricks ?

You need to do more research. There are so many types of bricks that it would be difficult to cost.

Castorama might be a good place to see what is on the market. Then go to a local wholesale merchant.

Delivery of sand is usually more expensive than the sand itself. In other words: look for hidden costs

Study / University in Poland is too easy [68]

I actually know people who left uni because they couldn't pass the exams.

This happens because young people are driven to achieve a higher education. They are often unsuitable and shouldn't be there. Also, I think you mean they were kicked out, rather than left.

It also happens because students have no real idea as to what they are going to study. Only in Poland do students, after the matura, say I don't know what I'm going to study.

Most young people in Wroclaw already know that they will go to the university here, and they are clueless as to the courses available elsewhere.

Careers lessons at school might help young people to decide wisely and stop them wasting my tax zlotys.

Life / Polish Names day traditions? Presents? Food? [39]

there's always Dzień Dziecka ;)

Of course, you are right and Santa Claus Day. Yes, children have no worries when it comes to special days.

I remember the days when one or two (then) student friends, who had special days in advent, had to wait till the new year to celebrate. Thankfully those days seem to be long gone.

Andrzejki can be a fun night, but we usually forget about it. It's coming up soon so I'd better say happy birthday, in case I forget that too. Happy birthday.

Life / Polish Names day traditions? Presents? Food? [39]

I've just asked two of my children: When is your Name Day ?

The answer: I don't know.

Mums and dads might dish out sweets etc on their child's Name Day. But that's about it.

Name Days are for older folk like me. But in my case it's at Christmas time, so I gain nowt.

I have to agree with JustysiaS and Magdalena. Name Days are not for kids.

Life / Paying bribes in Poland - necessity or a luxury? [41]

Lots of professions are paid poorly just because of the perception of how much they will rack in monthly in bribes.

I don't believe this at all. I doubt that the electrician who put the cables in, your post 15 house, made a single zloty. Only his boss made (easy) money.

Forward planning is the answer.

With regard to the building game: I've got to say this, because it's true. Most people who build their own homes in Poland haven't a clue as to what's involved. That's how bosses and officials can run rings around people, raise prices and expect bribes.

I'm sure that you are on top of things, so this does not apply to you Krakowianka, but it certainly applies to some others.

or paying the architecht to do a revised plan.

If the property is in the middle of a field (big garden) have the architect sort it out.
He/She is only a phone call away and everything will be legal.

You do have a problem, if you are too close to neighbours. If you don't give them space for light then they could make a complaint. As I've said the building line and being too close to a road can be a major issue.

I would find a copy of the building regs, give them a good read and take it from there.

BTW. if you are too close to a big tree or trees... make sure the next storm causes them enough damage for you to have to cut them down.

We had a difference from plan by 0.5 meter and they asked 5,000zl for it.

Might be cheaper to have the architect submit a revised plan.

The biggest problem is extending over the building line. Too close to a road and the house comes down.

Also, if you are talking about an exterior wall being half a metre out then the builder should cough up the 5,000zl. Or is the builder not responsible ?

Life / Deadly Roads - "Are polish roads really THAT dangerous?" [139]

It's all too easy to place/lay the blame on the roads,

As most drivers probably use the same route every day they should be aware of blackspots. Blaming the road in the event of an accident is ridiculous.

Love / I like this Polish girl, but she doesn't get my... English sense of humor [124]

I study translation and I sometimes find it embarrassing to listen to the translations made for the TV.

One reason is that (in the past) many translations were not made from the original script, but from watching the original film, writing down the text and then translating. The sound quality of the original film was often a factor, as was the skill of the listener and translator. If the film is repeated and the text/narration not updated, in most case mistakes will certainly show up.

At the time copyright was a little different to the present. That was at the beginning of the 90's.

Another problem is that what is said in one language can take longer in another. So in order to fit the words in they might be changed, or even left out.

Nowadays, I have no idea how they do it. But I imagine that it's a more professional service. Certainly modern computer programs help.

I'm not sure how BBC Pime operated, but some of their translations were often at odds with what I was hearing in the original. My favourite mistake was in the theme song to Dad's Army. It was only one word, but it jumped out off the screen.

Shreck was not a direct translation. It was a professional translation to suit the Polish cinema goer.

All in all, I think most mistakes are petty and never noticed by the majority audience. It's just people like us, teachers or whatever, who have an ear for these things.

Genealogy / What is typical perception of people from Jaszkówka/Klodzko? [5]

Take a look at some local websites, google some pictures.

The websites will tell you how the area is run, what type of employment local people are involved in etc. The pictures should give you a feel for how they spend their money and how they dress. A look at real estate will also tell you how they live.

But remember, the things you ask for are not area specific.

Life / What to do with my penny jar full of Polish coins? [10]

I have a jar full of coins, mostly 20gr or less. Are there any banks in Warsaw that will give you pln notes for them?

It would be easier to get rid of it at a local shop (5-10zl at a time). Or maybe a post office.

Do banks in Poland deal in small-change ? I've never seen it happen.

News / Adult movie producers looking for 'actresses' in Poland or just a weirdo? [120]

I think the only person to come close to an answer is LondonChick.

If I were in the porn industry I would use a low key approach to attract employees. That doesn't include cornering someone in the local shop.

I'm also sure that recruiting for this buiness is much the same as any other... busness card, polite explanation of what is required, arrangement for future interview.

Anyone doing recruiting on the fly should realize the consequenses of getting it wrong and be ready to apologize in such cases. No mention of this guy apologizing

It seems to me that the guy mentioned in the first post was a chancer, and rightly not to be trusted. He did nothing to show he was genuine. That is, show that he was working for a legitimate porn company.

History / Scotland and Poland. Mutual connections since 1576 [45]

With respect to the Reivers, my original thoughts were guided by wishful thinking.
Now I think that it is very probable that some families did come to Poland, but not all settled here. Most lists of Reivers give about thirty names. If any names, of those who stayed, were Polonicised then that group would be very small. Maybe as few as three or four. I don't know if that would make them easier or more difficult to find.

History / Scotland and Poland. Mutual connections since 1576 [45]

I've just entered: border reivers in poland ... into the search box and found that they did move to Poland. Amazing eh! I now might have family in Poland that I never knew about.

borderhorse.org ...In the section Geography, History, Culture... mentions Reivers in Poland.

It just shows that some of us might be closer than we think.

History / Scotland and Poland. Mutual connections since 1576 [45]

The Border Reivers had specific family names, so it would be very easy to trace.

I had this in mind. But it's not so easy. One story is that the Graham family were shipped to Holland (I think) and years later The Dutch Maharg family slowly moved back into Scotland.

I might look into this because I've never actually read about Reivers moving to Poland.
