News / The Polish president, Lech Kaczynski, refused to sign the Treaty of Lisbon [43]

Tesco have gotten smart and have monitored purchasing patterns and distribution/spread. As such, they have set up a smaller Tesco in a local community like Plus and Lidl do. It is much easier for people who reside far from the big one. It has most of the key products. They may continue to place them slap bang in the middle of areas surrounded by flats.

This doesn't have much to do with the Lisbon Treaty tho

Travel / Glasgow to Katowice - Wizzair OK? [21]

Thx 4 the price list telefonitika but it is a little misleading when u don't put how many mls are in each drink. Not a 660ml big Heineken but a 330ml can. It's a rip-off, daylight robbery

News / The Polish president, Lech Kaczynski, refused to sign the Treaty of Lisbon [43]

Being pro-Poland can mean taking a moderate approach without adopting a gung-ho one. I'm sorry, I'm not as vocal as some here, nor do I plan to be any time soon.

He clearly didn't voice his reservations vociferously enough as the ball kept rolling unabated without him slowing down the momentum.

I'll cede this 2 u, I don't know the exact balance of power between the President and PM in Poland as I've never studied it. Having said that, I know Montesquie, Dicey and Locke well so the notion of separation of powers isn't over my head, I hope :) Just based on what I've read, he is rocking the boat and is not making Tusk's job any easier.

Invalid document? According to who?

I'd wonder about the position were Jarek to be in office because he is posturing too much now and not being pragmatic.

Yes, other govts have received such grants. I'm not discussing them tho

There was a commission in 2005 established to investigate the misappropriation of funds allotted to roads.

Poland has been a recipient of a lot of aid, whether that's good I bad I reserve judgement.

U r implying that I'm belittling myself by playing down my intel. Being modest is more important to me. I'm just one regular guy with his own 2 cents like anybody else, that's all I'll ever be. I don't get ideas above my station.

On Poland, well, let me give u some positives:

The dairy is probably the best in the world

Outstanding natural beauty

Has attracted much foreign investment, raising awareness in so doing

Has the potential to be of global prominence in the sphere if IT, the future

Has many motivated people who like to know what's cookin

I have many Polish friends and I always (well, usually hehehe) type with the thought in my mind that they are looking over my shoulder, reading what I'm writing. Too many are cowards behind their screens.

News / Father Rydzyk In the News Again [28]

Puzzy, u capture the spirit of a forum beautifully. Sometimes u come across as being like a relentless professor, sb who will not let sth stand until it has been fully proven. It works 2 ways but I like it. Keep posting lad :)

USA, Canada / US wants Poles to visit, spend lots of money :) [28]

Aha, purity. Well, not entirely. I'm 1/4 Irish. I have a healthy love and appreciation of 'things Irish' although, first and foremost, I am a Scot.

Listening to U2 now, 'Lemon'

News / The Polish president, Lech Kaczynski, refused to sign the Treaty of Lisbon [43]

My point is that Kaczyński should have voiced his reservations at an earlier stage. Any concerns should have been aired then.

Kaczyński is playing political Russian roulette, playing with Tusk and being stubborn. One wonders how he would have behaved had his twin still been in office.

What do I mean? Clear as I can be, he lacks commitment

The greatest diffculty will be overcoming the intransigence that is taking hold.

The spirit of the treaty is one where nations come together to share and reach broad consensus on a range of issues. By opting out, this jeopardises the very fabric of it.

Don't try and push me into a corner, I've already told u that I don't have hard facts to support a claim that the Poles are draining resources from EU funds. What I do know is that the Polish govt has received numerous set-up grants which have been beneficial and efficacious. Look into the allegations of money mismanagement tho. Some accounting was a bit 'skewed' shall we say. Funds were allocated but the necessary work wasn't done, e.g road re-construction.

How can admit that which I'm not even trying to prove? It remains true that Poland has dipped into the coffers quite leisurely at times but if procedure allows it, then why not? U r picking the wrong guy to scrap with, I'm broadly pro-Poland and I merely go with what I know, or what I think I know, LOL

There are many derivates/off-shoots. Napier is a university in Edinburgh, I'm sure u knew that. Many emanate from the Scottish presence in Poznan all those years ago. Cheers for pointing that out, a shared aspect of our respective cultures

Good point Puzzy. It is defection for sure. Many Poles who go and live in Germany for a few years, having lived in Poland for even longer b4, are the same. They start speaking German and identify themselves more as German. WTF? I would never abandon being Scottish. Sure, I can embrace the cultures that I encounter when I travel, but u shouldn't lose ur identity through it.

News / The Polish president, Lech Kaczynski, refused to sign the Treaty of Lisbon [43]

Matter-of-factly, ok, while I concede that everyone can be afforded a change of heart, this is a little different. Kaczyński proceeded along a certain road during the preliminary negotiations and also came with some degree of compromise in him. However, latterly he has been recalcitrant, perhaps due to some Europhobe whispering nonsense in his ear. U must be decisive and stick 2 ur guns in politics. He has been wavering more than a schizophrenic kite ;)

I meant, from that 2nd point, that there will be a rock or 2 somewhere along the smooth path. Kaczyński must accept some degree of setback or sacrifice in order to encapsulate the spirit of the treaty. The Poles have prospered immeasurably in some areas as a result of EU intervention. In simple terms, a bit of give and take would be appreciated.

I mean that we should not forget the fundamental essence of the EU, from its origins being the EEC (1957) or even the ECSC (1953). Comity in international affairs cannot be understated. I maybe implied that the Poles leech but, frankly speaking, I have little solid evidence to back it up. It wasn't my intention to say that, merely to issue a caveat that we shouldn't overstep the balance of thrusting national affairs into what is a supranational institution.

Not really Puzzy, he lambasted him because he was sitting on the fence, perhaps anticipating a negative outcome for Poland. This is why the Brits are not happy with u too. U've gotta accept the bad with the good.

Maybe it would serve a useful purpose comparing what u signed to in May 2004 with what currently exists now and see if the Lisbon Treaty is really so fraught/laden with pitfalls.

Trzeba trochę zaufania. The EU was borne out of comity principles, not a collective kitty smash and grab approach.

U can buy non-UHT milk here without too much difficulty. Mlekpol put it in plastic bottles. Polish dairy is very good and milk is no exception

Law / I want to open a bar in Czestochowa [28]

True that, it happened here in Gliwice where the property owner tried to hike up the rents to an exorbitant level. Ruthless, especially on and near the rynek.

News / The Polish president, Lech Kaczynski, refused to sign the Treaty of Lisbon [43]

It's a bit late in the day to be stalling. If Kaczyński had got off his fat a*s a bit sooner, proceedings would be at a more advanced and decided stage.

And the situation may well change again, what then? One foot in, one foot out sitting on the fence is against the spirit of the treaty.
