Genealogy / Assistance required to locate my father in Gdansk [4]

My father was an exchange student in Manchester, UK, from Gdansk in the late 1970's.

Have you made inquiries at Manchester (university) (I assume). There might be a yearbook or photo with his full name.

The same applies for Gdansk.

Someone might have posted a photo or mentioned his name at FriendsReunited. The site does have listings for universities.

You might find that one of your mum's friends can remember something that will help.

Travel / Are Cyber Cafes available in Polish cities? [4]

There are no computers in my local library.

Some hotels have free internet... usually in the lobby area... for guests only, of course.

Cost at internet cafe: about three zloty an hour (I think)

There are plenty of hotspots in major cities, if you bring a laptop.

Genealogy / Płoszaj Family in Bilgoraj or Ksiezpol [6]

Family name was Płoszaj...

There are 686 people with this name at nasza klasa.pl

The site has a forum so it might be worth leaving a message.

Keep in mind that most of the posters at nasza klasa are youngsters. There are some older folk too, who might be able to help.

A carefully worded message might gain results.

Problem: You will have to register first and it's all in Polish.

edit: I notice that the name Ploszaj gives many results at ancestry.com

Feedback / Text that is unsuccessfully posted is too easily lost. [54]

That back button thing has just saved me a lot of effort.

I'm sure that it worked when the site was set up (maybe it's just my imagination), but then it didn't. Now it works fine.

If we didn't have this thread I'd never have known about it.

So thanx for that one, Admin.

Genealogy / Tracing a genealogy, the family name Bialobryski [5]

I’m second generation American. My fathers side of the family is from the Ukraine,

Are you sure ? Part of Ukraine and part of Poland... at one time were Galicia.

This is important, if you try to trace his roots. It is reasonable to assume that anyone from Galicia might have been Jewish. Not always the case though.

Ancestry.com has records for your spelling/name

It's possible that the original name had a slightly different spelling. I found a few close matches.

Check: Ellis Island Records.... for family who entered the US

Search for Naturalization Papers

If any member of the family served in the US military... check military records.

Check old papers and documents for clues. It's possible that an old aunt has something in the back of a drawer. You never know.

Place names are very important.

Speak to other family members for information.

Look at old photos... for military uniforms... specific buildings... etc

We can help with photos and text, if needs be.

There are some good links in the Genealogy Resources. It just takes time to find the right one.

Genealogy / Ryszkowska/Gryszkowska from old Polish Town from pre-1930 ("antowi zcizus") [14]

There is/was a Nancy in the Czech Republic.

Your post isn't clear.

Did you find Ryszkowska or Gryszkowska.

Because I can only find Ryszkowska.

If you heard the name Nancy... then the 'c' might be 'ts'

There is something wrong with the place names. Please scan and post the relevant part of the document. We might see something that you don't.

Life / Polish Christmas Traditions [19]

wHAT ARE THE TRADITIONS OF A POLISH CHRISTMAS?

12 dishes/courses
hay under the tablecloth
white tablecloth
carp... main dish
extra plate... for unexpected visitor
I think a 13th person sat at the table is unlucky (not sure)

clean the windows
clean the house

go to church (a bit more often at Christmas time)

Don't forget 6th December... Santa Claus Day
An angel or starman brings the prezzies 24th December.

Leave a window open 24th December... for angel, starman, santa... to deliver prezzies

Others will contradict and or add more. It depends on the region you live in.

Feedback / Text that is unsuccessfully posted is too easily lost. [54]

The strangest thing is that those who have "also noticed the problem" have never actually tested if it was really a problem.

multiple posts over a number of years = no more long posts from me unless they are copy/pasted. I'm not going to waste my time writing a long post, just to prove anyone right or wrong.

If you check my posts for the past month or so you will notice that I have already made comments about blocked posts. I just didn't inform mods or yourself by PM or by starting a new thread.

And the point that I was making was that, if you spend a long time writing a post then sometimes you encounter problems.

But it's no big deal because as has been mentioned there are other ways to save and post.

News / Captain of hijacked tanker is Polish [71]

If you want problems, go to Somalia.

I like the solution given by the Indian Navy. They sank a pirate boat yesterday.

If you know who they are and where they are from.

Try this: archiwa.gov.pl/?CIDA=43

It's the (Polish) State Archive. In English and Polish

Feedback / Text that is unsuccessfully posted is too easily lost. [54]

can't you then post even if you are the last poster?

As I've already said, if it is a long time consuming post, then the answer is... (usually) no.

The reason I never bother any more with long texts.

News / Captain of hijacked tanker is Polish [71]

"Somali pirates have abducted a Saudi tanker off the coast of Kenya".

I noticed that in the British press there was concern for the British members of the crew. Now I find that the story has developed and includes Polish citizens (as well as other nationalities)

I thought we had a thread on this, but I can't find it. Please, move my post if needs be.

Admin: can we have a 'Polish News' thread, please.

Genealogy / Help with the name "Littman". [4]

The last name is Littman which to me sounds jewish!

Do a name search at: JewishGen

The name appears in Poland and one or two other places. It also appears with slight spelling differences. You will also see where it occurs in Poland.

You will have to register at JewishGen to do a name search. It's free.

BTW. Some Polish meals have Jewish origins. So don't be fooled by family recipes

Life / Holiday's in Poland! Not allowed thanksgiving off. [30]

Ericlipis,

Consider this: On December 24th, which is when the main Christmas meal takes place in Poland, many people (shopworkers) will still be at their place of work until late afternoon. Unless, of course, Dec 24th falls on a Sunday.

If they can't get the day off for Christmas Eve, why should you get the day off for something that means nothing at all in Poland..

Have your meal in the evening or celebrate at the weekend.

News / EU Hypocrisy Regarding Polish Shipyards [30]

This is the same for all the workers at the shipyard, if they are forced to better themselves they will

A good example might also be the Tyneside shipyards.

Ship building on the Tyne and Wear, at one time, was the busiest in the world.

Life / Holiday's in Poland! Not allowed thanksgiving off. [30]

Anyone have any thoughts about his reaction?

Sometimes you have to fit in. In this house the traditional English Christmas dinner is always on 26th December, not 25th.

There is: Marya Bryg.

I notice that you have English spellings for some of these names.

Is this one yours:

Joannes Bryg

Place: Wola Rzedzinska, Tarnov, Krakowskiego, Poland.

Father: Peter Bryg

For Tarnov read Tarnów

Genealogy / Bryg Family Tarnow [14]

Victoria(Viktoria) Bryg was kidnapped

This might be in a newspaper archive. Have you looked ?

Jan or Jannik Bryg a Baker

Many tradesmen belonged to guilds. You might find a guild of bakers.

Also, he might be listed in a trade directory.

[quote=Guest] Maria Bryg born ??? ,the eldest sister she went to Amerika, Chicago married Stowik or Slowik [quote]

Check: Ships Records. Ellis Island.

Joseph Bryg

Someone might be able to help with military records.

Some of the links provided on the forum will help. Spend some time reading them, checking, and then get back to us.

Language / DO YOU LIKE ENGLISH "KALKI" (CARBON COPIES) IN POLISH? [2]

What is your atttiude (if any) towards them.

I don't mind 'borrowings' so long as people know that they are just that.

There are groups in the UK (chiefly the BBC) who are trying to record and document original language and dialect. Simply because it is being eroded by the movement of people and influence of other cultures.

Genealogy / 20 y/o female (pics & summary) trying to clarify my polish heritage [26]

Cicho Helen - Be quiet Helen :D

I agree with this

More likely "Jesus, Kochana"

I agree with this.

Nikki, family opinion, in this house, is that you look Polish.

I have a feeling that some of that Native American is showing through.

Your father is obvious Polish.

Genetically, I inherited half of both my parents' genes, so I suppose have some features of my mother.

Genes have a strange way of showing themselves. One child can look like mum, the other like dad. A third child may not look much like either parent.
