Language / When does polish "ch" sound like eng "ch" and when is it "h"? [59]

lol.. no way.. there is no difference.. z is another pole so reread what he wrote.

Two polish guys on this thread have said that there is no difference between ch and h so I would think that's that. Is it possible that some regional accents in Poland differ slightly with pronunciation as they do in other countries and non-natives might hear the letters pronounced with a slight difference?

UK, Ireland / How can I ship bulky, heavy items from Poland to the UK?? [7]

What are the options for sending parcels/boxes of books 5-10-20kg?

Some Polish people that I know, send parcels/boxes back to Poland with the help of a Polish church. There is a collection once a week and the boxes etc, are then all sent together and takes about 1 week to get to various cities in PL. The cost is £1 per kg, quite cheap.

It might be worth finding out if there is a collection service like this near you.

Black culture = knife crime,

Yes no way does black culture = knife crime. I expect David has read about gang murders in black communities within large Uk cities.

Feedback / I Really Think You Should Change Polish Forum Checker......... [21]

Reason why, I am trying to see if someone replied back to me. Which mean I have to read all the posts I posted to find if someone is replying back to me? You should add Message For You in Checker.

Arlene, the forums are"public forums" which means anyone can reply. If you want to post to one member only, then PM is the only way to do it. Do you use your profile page to see which threads you last posted in?

I have no ways knowing who is posting to me and persons who have no ways of knowing who is posting to them.

Most members will quote a few lines of your post when replying to you and this has been used for many years and works well.

Food / Help with info on a peculiar vodka/cream drink. [13]

Come on Vincent, think Scottish ;)

That's it Seanus, I wasn't thinking Scottish, was I? The nicest mix with Baileys that I had, was Tia Maria. ( baby Guinness) 3 parts TM and 2 parts Baileys. Served in a shot glass and downed in one. No hangovers with this, but you will sleep well that night.

Back on topic, don't know if I would like cream in vodka?

Language / Questions about Polish language and grammar - I can help you [16]

I would like to say that "dwojga, trojga ... sześciorga" is the genetive case of "dwoje, troje ... sześcioro". These numerals are used with plural neutral nouns or nouns describing groups of living beings of both sexes.

Many thanks for explaining this Ziemowit :)

If you have some questions about Polish language and grammar, write them here.

dwojga, trojga, czworga, pięciorga, sześciorga... Are these numbers used for counting groups of females? If not could you tell me what they are used for? Thanks.

Life / Polish city streets - why do trucks go around spraying water on them ? [28]

I'm even reluctant to believe it's cooling the tarmac as they should be doing that at the hottest times of day.

And me, since roads are built with a camber to allow water to run away quickly to the sides. I would go along with the dust theory and hope someone finds out for sure ;)

Language / Collective numbers - dwoje, troje, czworo [38]

So can anyone add to my list?

czworo ludzi.. You seem to have it sorted, in that, the nominative case of the collective numeral is followed by the genitive plural of the counted noun.

7. siedmioro
8.ośmioro
9.dziewięcioro
10. dziesięcioro
11. jedenaścioro
12.dwanaścioro

Sorry Ewcinka is a faster typist than me ;)

Language / Collective numbers - dwoje, troje, czworo [38]

Strange but I was reading about these earlier. The bad news is they don't stop at four , they just keep going on, but 2 to 12 is used most frequently.

UK, Ireland / FIVE DIE AS POLE DRIVES WRONG WAY ON UK MOTORWAY [78]

Exactly, the angles are all wrong on a motorway, in any country, for it to be easy for someone to end up going in the wrong direction.

Don't understand that! The angles are right, taking you into the flow the traffic not against it. The only time you could be going the wrong way, is if you were to do a U turn.

Love / Could "food" potentially come between us? [25]

but be prepared that your bf's mum would not be happy if you are gonna cook for yourself

That's very true, your boyfriends mum will be very offended as she will have gone to a lot of trouble cooking meals in your honor. Every guest is treated like royalty in a Polish home.

The good side is, Polish food is delicious and after trying it, you will probably want to try cooking some when you get back home.

Smacznego

Love / SOS!! I feel a little hopeless with my Polish husband... [58]

he's just being violent

left me alone at home with the pain on my body

If this man is psychically beating you, then it is time to get out of this marriage. You can't stay with someone who is going to hit you every time you have an augment.
