Feedback / PolishForums.com mission needs to be plastered on the front of this forum [49]

Mission Statement.
My Thoughts.

The Mission Statement to my mind is a waste of time. It only satisfies the person/people who wrote it. For the most part I doubt that many posters have actually read it. And if they have it makes no difference once they have been drawn into an arguement.

We are controlled somewhat by the threads we are given to post in. The threads in themselves hold posters to a particular theme. And therefore within the bounds of the Mission Statement.

Random Chat and many of the Lounge topics are an escape route for Admin. They keep posters on the forum and at the same time allow these posters to drift away from the ideas in the Mission Statement.

Much of what fails to live up to the Mission Statement is down to posters. And much of what has made the forum so popular is down to these same posters, and others.

Genealogy / Photos of Poland... curious where it could be? [16]

so once again I am stuck.

not really. you have a name. if you write to the correct authority you may get the answer you want.

short of the vatican.... write to the office of the head of church in the area you are researching. or failing that.. the office of the head of the church in Poland.

The priest may not have been in residence. You have no idea if he was filling in or not.

edit: filios put it so much better than me

Life / Rudeness of polish people when they are drunk [43]

One thing that i am noticing recently is the rudeness of some polish people when they are drunk.

It's part of the modern age in Poland. More pubs and clubs than ever before with the addition of more money in people's pockets.

You are bound to bump into some clown every once in a while. Or rather some clown is..........
Bad news, if it was your local. However, I can't see it happening every time you go out. Treat it as a one off.

History / The WW2 Polish Cemetary and Records at Monte Cassino [9]

To start you off.

Wikipedia: Polish cemetery at Monte Cassino

Google: monte cassino polish war memorials

or at least a combination of those words.

"the memorial of the third Carpathian Division, which sits overlooking the monastery and the Polish War Cemetery, on the North Ridge'' (from a BBC website)

Food / Polish cakes that hit the spot - Miodownik [40]

One thing I like about Poland is the amount of individual bakers/confectioners.

Not a huge number these days, but enough to realize that one shop is better than another.

The nearest shop won't do when I need something special.

Food / Polish cakes that hit the spot - Miodownik [40]

JustysiaS,

Have you noticed a big difference between Uk and Poland cakes/confectionary.

I don't want to start a forum war, but who does it better in your opinion ?

The Poles would have to go some to beat a custard slice from Hills the Bakers.

Food / Polish cakes that hit the spot - Miodownik [40]

Oh dear !

We have a disagreement. I don't like the almond, marzipan taste that accompanies mak type cakes.

For UK folk: Do you like Tort (from places like Filipinka). Served at birthday parties etc. I find it usually has too much cream or is too sweet.

I still eat it of course.

There are those on the forum who no the importance of doughnuts in my life.

But I do fancy Szarlotka now and again.

Life / Celebrating Christmas in Poland [52]

So get a wee present for everyone, something a bit more for any kids and my friend.

In the UK you might write on the gift tag: To Mary, From John.

In Poland the Christmas gift is from Santa or an Angel or a Starman... depending on family tradition.

Don't write who the gift is from. Just write the name of the person it is for.

Others posters may say otherwise though.

Life / What to wear for winter in Poland [51]

Standing at a tram stop (and the shelters don't help much) in a blizzard amid -20 degree temperatures is no picnic.

Fashion overrides temperature. And how often does it get to -20 ?

Only problem there Wroclaw is that brown is the colour at the moment :)

Yes, I've noticed some brown too. So, if that's what you have elfshmelf, it will be OK.

Many wear a scarf outside of their coat, not inside.

Life / What to wear for winter in Poland [51]

i got some boots, skinny jeans, gloves, scarf, hat...

You might need a long sweater. It will look like a short skirt when you are wearing your short (parka style) jacket/coat.

of course very many women wear long coats too.

If it's black it's good.

There are quite a few styles and mixed styles in Poland at the moment.

Make sure that the jeans are tucked into the boots and that the boots have only a low to medium heel.

USA, Canada / The 2nd Amendment (USA), the right to own guns [261]

This settles it. Very British English. An American GI would never tell someone to shag off.

You really should check people's previous posts.

I think that you'll find that Franek uses the phrase 'shag off' and one or two other select phrases, after a conversation with one of the (female) posters on the forum.

Therfore I am leaving to seek greener pastures.

I'm sure I'm not alone in thinking that you should keep posting here.

You have my respect.

Genealogy / Mogila and Czyzyny towns in Poland [10]

I guess this sounds a little nutty,

nasza klasa.pl

Has four pages of people with the name you are after. A few of these show up as maiden name.

If you would like me to do another search... PM me.

I will not put living people's info on the forum.

Genealogy / Ryszkowska/Gryszkowska from old Polish Town from pre-1930 ("antowi zcizus") [14]

I've just written a load of info for you, but of course it's just disappeared and I'm not going to do it again.

Try: Ksenja or Ksenia, not Kesenja.

Xenia also goes with Oksana.

It's possible that Ksenja/ia is the original spelling.

I also think you should be looking for place of origin as far north and east as Lithuania.
