Life / 800 thousand Polish women are victims of domestic abuse yearly [180]

in what sense and what aspect of her criticism do they agree with?

too early for me to discuss that. s I wrote, I never heard about the group until this morning.

I am not the biggest fan of Oriana since I believe that her illness effected her judgement

Sometimes illness brings out the best and the most honest out of people. I tend to agree with her on some of the multicultural points.

It is noticeable that only pictures of women (and children) are shown.

Yup, men get beat in Poland too. One big war going on there :)

Staggering numbers!

But.. the spread of violence type is pretty wide too - from verbal abuse to murder. Not that verbal abuse is OK but I am verbally abused by my two cats on a daily basis.

And that Feminoteka, as a side note, I never heard about them so I checked. Pretty radical group at times.

They also seemed to support Oriana Fallaci with her criticism of multicultural Europe and pretty strong criticism of Islam.

News / Polish engineer beheaded in Pakistan. [347]

Strange country, this Pakistan. Perfectly good Hindu people turned into islamic nuts.

About the only solution I see is for Pakistan and the like is what Atatürk did in Turkey. No screwing around, no nice talk, PC or so called human rights of some assholes against human rights of the whole.

Not true. Catholics are allowed condoms, except during sexual intercourse :)

Get a grip, Z_D. It's not like the shirts express official policy. If were's gonna start acting based on what is printed on t-shirsts

So why attack some of those who make less than flattering comments about Israel on this forum? This forum is far from any official policies, isn't it?

military t shirts, pretty standard in most armies.

Oh, gotcha, so it's fine to wear T-Shirts saying "Kill Pregnant Jewish Women"

How is that less noteworthy than behavior of people handling using guns and actually killing people?

That IS the real issue. A modern age genocide financed in part by the US.

I would very much hope that the comparison makes sense to nobody. I would hate anybody to consider murdering babies as 'sense'.

I was commenting on the style of writing. As a person who aspires to inform others via written media... well... noblesse oblige. You need to be careful, your hatred towards Poles is now beginning to affect your writing skills.

As for killing babies, an appalling idea to even think about it. Some people are savages indeed.

I stand by it, any civilian choosing to knowingly take property and livelyhood of other people in a contested warzone must conform with becoming a target, this is my outlook regardless of nationality, tough luck there buck i'm still not an antisemit:)

So you're just fine with the civilian casualties during the Warsaw Uprising? After all, those civilians chose to live in Warsaw when it was a
warzone so, by your logic, the Nazis were entirely within their holy rights to target those civilians.

HArry, as usual, you use twisted statements and logic is something you absolutely hate.

See, Poles lived in Warsaw BEFORE Germans occupied it.
In case of Israel, the country experienced sizable immigration from various countries, including USA after it was created amidst quite a mess.

Also, you comparison would make sense if you wrote to a German who complained that his compatriots are being killed by Polish underground in Warsaw.

News / Poland will take half a century to catch up with the West [240]

Poland will take half a century to catch up with the West

The way things are going in economy, and with all that financial genius of the West Poland doesn't have to catch up with anything. The West is catching up with Poland really fast.

History / Jewish love towards Poles [389]

Polish prince gives Prussia to Teutons (who were not ethnically German, though majority of them were).

That is not precise.

In 1226 Duke Konrad I of Masovia invited the Teutonic Knights, a German military order of crusading knights, headquartered in the Kingdom of Jerusalem at Acre, to conquer the Baltic Prussian tribes on his borders.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prussia#Early_history

In the 13th century Konrad of Masovia had called for Crusades and tried for years to conquer Prussia, but failed. Thus the pope set up further crusades. Finally he invited the Teutonic Knights to fight the inhabitants of Prussia in exchange for a fief of Chełmno Land. Prussia was conquered by the Teutonic Knights during the Prussian Crusade and administered within their monastic state.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prussia_(region)#Teutonic_Knights

Konrad and Mazovians were chickenshits and they could never offer Prussia to the Knights because Prussians beat the living crap out of Mazovians.

I rather think most got converted rather than killed, but still...the pagan people "Prussians" vanished..

I don't know the numbers but I guess eventually Prussians decided it would be easier to learn German than to expel the Knights.

History / Jewish love towards Poles [389]

As for Pomerania and Prussia, Poland needs to give the land back to the Pomerians and Prussians which Poles took it from before the German took it from the Poles (and held it for 600 years).

I never knew Poland took Prussia from Prussians. Weren't that Teutonic Knights who partly exterminated and partly Germanized Prussians? Thus Poland didn't take Prussia from Prussia but from Germans. There are no surviving Prussians to return the land to. If I am not mistaken the last native Prussian died in the second half of the 18th century.

Work / My daughter goes to study in Poland [13]

its ok dad.. she will be just fine :)

let her go... :)

That's exactly what wifey says.
Women are tough! No heart at all ;)

And will she remember about lunch and to wear a hat in Winter?

Seriously, no point in even trying to stop her. She's been working hard to get this going.

Poland is addictive. I wouldn't be suprised if she decided to stay a bit longer then study years.

I'm pretty sure she'll ba back in 2011 as she need to finish her coursework here to move on to a grad school. At least that's the plan as of now.

Can she speak polish?

Yes, she's perfectly bilingual so that part should be easy for her.

Work / My daughter goes to study in Poland [13]

A little surprise that transpired a few months ago.

My daughter visited Poland some 3 years ago and since then couldn't stop thinking about somehow going back there for a "bit" longer. She's in the second year of University here in Canada majoring in history and political science. She just go accepted by one of Polish universities - the same school where I met my wife.

The irony of it all, eh? She's going where we came from.

It ain't easy to think about it but watcha gonna do. It looks like she's grown up now.
About the only thing easy about all of this is that at least her Canadian school is paying for it all.

Life / Grooms family obligation on a Polish wedding [3]

In the olden days the wedding took place in the bride's house. Right now that varies but the costs of the wedding were traditionally the responsibility of the bride's family. That is not cast in stone though and families often share that cost. Most often, however, the bride's family takes care of the actual organizational side of the wedding while the costs are split 50/50, or each family covers the cost associated with their own guests.

Drinks are traditionally on the groom, the cost is rarely split. In Poland it is (at least wasn't until recently) acceptable for guest to pay for their own drinks.

Additionally, the bride's family covers all formal costs - fees, decoration of church, photography, transportation for guests and music.

Groom's and his family's duties are the purchase of wedding bands, car for the bride and groom, flowers for the bride, witnesses and groomsmen.

Wedding rehearsal is not among Polish traditions at all. Some would likely try to follwo with the first night rehearsal ;) It appears to be a North American tradition.

The above is in regards to Poles living in Poland. Most Polish Americans are likely to conform the the North-American ways. It is always safe to ask the other family how the wedding and associated costs would be approached.

UK, Ireland / POLES SUPERIOR TO BRITS? [260]

Poles are very cold and aloof

only before the first shot of vodka

Poles can be quite heavy going and dont have much of a sense of humour

Humor was all Poles had for decades trying to survive on a daily basis.

Poles are over emphatic on matters such as how intellegent you are rather than taking the person as a whole

It's all a question of priorities. Do you take the person as a whole if you overemphasize humor so much?

Poles often dont show much emotion or body language making it hard to engage with them

OK, maybe Poles are not the keenest of gymnasts, but the complexities of the spoken language require enough acrobatics.

Btw. when I first came to the US and I saw newscasters and, what struck me then, as an overly intrusive, body language and, body and head movements I had an impression they really need to go to a washroom or something.

News / Poland..wake up to a multicultural world [1059]

D_Z,
what does it have to do with multiculti on Poland I ask.

It has to do with the fact that a lot of Poles came to live to Toronto and some are going back and carry their Canadian experience with them. It also has to do with the general direction of the thread where arguments for and against are put forward.

I'm glad to see you see through all that PC BS.

I generally try to look through BS, whether it is PC or not. I am a liberal conservative, or a conservative liberal :)

I do not follow party lines. I follow issues.

Language / mój vs. swój [9]

While the usage of possessive pronouns may vary by the region, general level of literacy some basic rules, which when broken do not break the communication, are as follows:

Swoj is a generic possessive pronoun that is applied to all persons and genders (inflection still applies)

If you talk about a person whose object you have in mind the you use "swoj". Otherwise you use appropriate pronoun.

Example:

1. I like my city - (ja) lubie swoje miasto
2. He like his city - on lubi swoje miasto

3. He likes my city - On lubi moje miasto
4. I like his city - (ja) lubie jego miasto.

Some grammatical twisters are:

a)
He likes his city - On lubi jego miasto

as opposed to example #2 here he is not the same person as referred to by his, i.e "he like someone's else's city".

b)
(ja) lubie moje miasto is still correct (compare example #1)

News / Poland..wake up to a multicultural world [1059]

In Toronto multiculturalism is the thing of the day. We are so fvcking proud of it and it has worked so very very well. Actually too well and, as we know, too much of anything, including love of course, can't be good for you, so some Toronto school districts, with support of ethnic minorities (this almost always translates into "visible minorities") decided to open Black Only School(s). This will allow people with of non-white background to better retain their languages, ethnic issues, identities and all the other usual labels politicians and activists throw at ya.

I wonder if it might be even possible to open White Only School in Canada.
You know, to maintain their language, ethnic issues and identity.

Source (describes the trend and plans for Toronto as of 2007. The plans are being implemented)

Food / Why do Poles just not "understand" healthy eating ?? [82]

When I try to tell them some of these are not necessary and unhealthy they look at me as if I'd just announced the moon is made from cheese.

I had a chat with a French fella on the subject. He view was: if you want sugar free, salt free, fat free etc then... why eat at all?

I don't know what Poles eat these days. When I lived there "healthy food" was designed into the "social" policies. Food coupons for nutter, meat, sugar. Which government cares for the health of their citizens more? :)

I have a feeling that with the newly found freedoms one of the first Poland's imports was junk food from the West. Poles, from what are hear, are still somewhat in ha;f decent shape but they may catch up with Brits pretty soon.

Obesity is an important health problem in Poland affecting adolescents and adults. A study of a Lower Silesian population aged 20-40 years (25 400 participants), between 1993 and 2003, showed an increase in obese women from 8.9% to 15.0%, but no change in men (6.3% vs. 6.5%, respectively). Obesity was more frequent in girls and women (6% and 15%) compared to boys and men (4.0% and 6.5%, respectively). Estimation of obesity prevalence in various parts of Poland seems to be regionally dependent; the highest prevalence of obesity was observed in eastern regions of Poland.

cababstractsplus.org/abstracts/Abstract.aspx?AcNo=20053076873

InUK:

A further 32% of women and 46% of men are overweight, meaning that most people in England (58%) are now either fat or obese.

Love / Discussion about Polish Men's Tempers [103]

the real question. do most polish men have bad tempers, also towards women?

Yes. All of us just love beating women up and our ultimate goal is to annihilate all Polish women. Thankfully, there are still some left, and those who are are really tough so we should be busy for another few thousand years.

But seriously, bad temper?
What you described should make you run away from the bastard.

News / Some Poles burning American flag [299]

I'd say burning of national flags, regardless whether it's mine or others', should lead to the culprit being flogged.

Btw. in many countries the proper way to dispose of an old national flag is by burning it. Discretely.

History / Roman Dmowski- Polish Adolf Hitler? [219]

Get off my leg man. You've been humping on it since the other night

If I have something to say about another poster's word I will. Such is a nature of any forum. If you can't take it perhaps a forum is not for you and you might need to set a blog for yourself. One where visitors wouldn't be able to post comments. A blog like that would allow you to be as "Hitler-esque" as you want.
