Travel / How Can I Not be the "Ugly American" Tourist in Poland? [97]

Please, please don't dress like the rather misguided American Student that I met in a bar in Krakow last year.... he was dressed in a Russian military coat and Russian military style hat.

Apparently he's been up in Nowa Huta checking out the "poor people"

<wince>

Love / Why do Polish Women Think They Know Better? [134]

All the polish women I have met since I have moved here are very strong minded and also very quick to voice their opinions

Sounds like me. Maybe I am really Polish and my parents didn't tell me... hmmm...

like colgate toothpaste is not good for you,

I've had a similar conversation with Mr LC LOL!

UK, Ireland / belfast seven [14]

I've really no idea, Del Boy.

I've been to Belfast a few times, and never seen a 7 look like an inverted L LOL!

UK, Ireland / Poles and Poles in the UK = animosity [42]

Sorry, am I being dim here, but your post really doesn't make any sense....

Maybe some paragraphs would help?

UK, Ireland / Polish homeless in the UK [42]

Out running this evening, I ran past some offices, where there were notices in English and Polish, warning that sleeping in the doorways would not be tolerated. This is a part of the city where a lot of homeless gather at night, as there is some warmth from the office heating systems.

Not sure why, but the fact that the signs were also written in Polish made me feel quite sad: The thought of Poles coming over to the UK, to make a new life, yet ending up on the streets :(

Life / Level of English among the Poles? [64]

Swedes in general are good english speakers. So are the danes and dutch.

These are Germanic languages though - from the Same family as English. I speak a couple of languages, and can honestly say that Swedish was the easiest language for me (native English speaker) to master very quickly.

Poles on the other hand are still a bit off.

Polish is a slavic language on the other hand - different family of languages.

So is there any "standard of knowledge" of the English language among the Polish people?

No, I don't think that there is - and you can say that about any language. Some people are better attuned to languages than others, and sometimes a qualification is not really an indication. For instance, I have a friend who has a degree in French. He's happy to write about 17th century literature in French - yet would struggle to order a coffee in French.

Travel / Rate of Exchange in Katowice [16]

Anyone know the best place to check in the UK for holiday money?

Post office is usually your best bet - though the reality is that I almost always end up picking up my currency at the airport.

Or Brits doing business in Poland :(

Or indeed for Brits wanting to buy property in Poland (like myself)

I've never really aspired to buying property overseas... until I was at the Baltic coast last week... suddenly the idea of a wee bolt-hole became very appealing...

Especialy for manly men. Who might not be entirely comfortable with their own sexuality

Indeed - although they'll never turn down a chance to play with a pair of horny lesbians....

Love / Polish Gay Life [142]

homophobia is about manliness, which has to be proved by sleeping with women. As I noticed even on this thread, it is the male posters who have problem with men/man relatuionships. It sounds to me that they are threatened and afraind that of they find the male body attractive, they are not man enough. That is why I said it had little to do with sex per se, but more with the fear of one not being manly enough.

I am really frustrated that your post, which makes so much sense, is going largely ignored by the PFers :(

Life / Good Polish Music: disco polo, rock, and club music [33]

Yup - the one... sounds similar to nelly Futardo - really edgy. And I love the bit in the middle where the guy is dancing to a completely different tune that sounds lke an ice-cream van gone wrong LOL.

LondonChick: Feel - brilliant band Got their album :)

Downloaded it today :)

Not the sort of music that I'd usually listen to, but they were brilliant live. And I got to meet them (allbeit briefly) after the gig.

Love / Polish Gay Life [142]

While things have improved in recent years, it is still tough being gay: a very dear friend of mine who is gay was recently taken out for a drink by his boss, who kept asking "why everyone that he's ever worked with was hinting that he might be a bit different" and that "he wasn't normal, not like his wife and him". None of his fecking business!!

I've been to various pride events in London, Berlin and Montreal, and didn't see any guys having sex in the streets... just a bunch of guys out having a good time and enjoying their freedom not to mention some brilliant music :)
