ALWAYS speak the language of the country one is in.

Never try to speak the local language because you will sound like a retard or a two-year-old child who is still at the Mary-has-a-dog level.

When I went to visit Polibuda in 2017, I walked up to a group of students and like a fool from another planet asked: Anybody here speaks English? They all said yes.

As a rule they don't speak it well though. Some of them understand a bit better than they speak but they're definitely nowhere near fluent. Why would they be?

Maybe you can do that on holiday but not in everyday life, nor would you want to.

The second step, fish for some better threads, a casual American outfit won't do in Poland.
Learn some basic phrases in Polish, although Poland is very accommodating to English-speaking people will the majority of the public does not communicate in that language,
If you are unable to learn due to the sugar and artificial crap you intake in your food, you can fall back to a notebook and draw some pictures if, like an average American, you lost your ability to use pen or pencil effectively, you can use your phone.
