Karen Majewski, Pol-Am historian and archivist, has been re-elected mayor of Hamtramck, Michigan -- once one of America's most Polish enclaves. Now Muslims of various ethnicites (Bengalis, Bosnians, Pakistanis, Kosovar Albanians, Yemenis et al) are gaining ground.

I used to go to Hamtramck many years ago. St. Florian's Church is awesome. On Joseph Campau Street there was a shop called Polish Art Center that was run by people named Kalenkiewicz.
Majewski? There was a physician in Toledo by that name. His office was close to St. Anthony's Church on Nebraska Avenue. My uncle, who was a cigarette smoker, was told by Dr. Majewski "If you are going to continue smoking don't bother coming to me anymore".

Now Muslims of various ethnicites (Bengalis, Bosnians, Pakistanis, Kosovar Albanians, Yemenis et al) are gaining ground.
But Majewski says they all integrate well and contribute to the town`s prosperity with their diversity.
Majewski is also proud of the way residents have nourished the city's identity as a diverse and welcoming community to everyone. "We live on thirty-foot lots, we smell each other's cooking, we hear each other's music, we hear each other's conversations, we sit on our front porches and watch our neighbors go by," she says. Cultural diversity is just outside your front door in this city. Majewski adds that there are roughly 26 languages spoken in the city's two square miles.
