History cannot be undone. If history justifies crimes today and tomorrow, this means that history-based crimes can go on forever because the justification for them will never go away. Duh!

Lynchings were terrible because they were carried out extra-judiciously (and were common in other parts of the country as well at the time and didn't only target blacks).

And.... the unfortunate (or fortunate) reality is that most lynching victims were.... guilty....

It was a general breakdown in law and order across large parts of the country (and/or a continuation of rough frontier justice) and not just a case of whitesouthern racists killing random black people (modern version of history).
