We normally have our coldest time in January and Februaey.

That`s a tragedy, indeed. Yes, Brits aren`t prepared for such conditions. Let them enjoy their mild climate, then.

This can happen anywhere but British kids are not taught ice safety like we were back in the days. Do they still do it in primary schools?

I must ask my kids but they might have forgotten already.

We didn't have it in the UK when I was a kid. Not many ponds in the area and mild winters generally back then; it was rarely below freezing, and any ice that formed on water was obviously too thin to walk on. We were taught more about avoiding slag heaps (for coal mine waste) and staying away from railway lines, not that we ever followed the instructions.

I remember walking on the frozen Wisła River with kids about 12 years ago. It was funny and completely safe coz the ice was thick enough to hold a tank.
